      Partially true. Going in with no training or experience and expecting immediate success would set you up for failure for sure. However if someone wants to go for it and is willing to put in the work behind the scenes, I think it’s doable.

    Hi Jay, a business inquiry, how much would you charge for narrating a 400-page book, size 12 font, with a slightly larger spacing in between lines? Moreover, I tried to reach you through your email link, but it didn't let me see the email address. This might be because I live in South Australia, while you are based in America.

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 5 днів тому

      Hey! Good question, and it somewhat depends on the narrator's experience. New narrators are often on the hook for both narration AND post production at a rate from $50-175 per finished hour (PFH). Professional/veteran narrators will ask at least the union minimum of $250 per finished hour (PFH) for a book (scaling up to $1000 PFH on the top end), then an additional fee for post production if that isn't handled by the publisher. Final cost is always determined by the final runtime of the book at the end of the process, but you can give a rough estimate using word count. ~9300 words is typically ~1 finished hour of audio, so a 93k word book will be ~10 hours long. Multiply that by your PFH rate and you have an estimate. Hope that helps!

    Nice content! To my ears the 103 was a little too bright in the top end, the U87 was a bit too mid forward, and the 102 was just right. Once again, the TLM 102 is my favorite microphone I've ever used.

  • @psufilm
    @psufilm 5 днів тому

    I picked out the TLM 102 right away. It's my favorite microphone of all time. I actually like it more than the U87. To me it's clear but not bright/harsh, balanced and smooth. The other mics sounded tubby/stuffy in the low mids in comparison to the 102. For me the TLM 102 just works on everything, acoustic guitars, electric guitar cabs, brass, woodwinds, percussion. At $750 it's a steal.

    What can be confusing is that you have De click at the beginning of the processes in the stand alone (right frame) with mouth de click single & double band and Mouth De click/reduce smacks located at the bottom of the list. I remember an article on the correct order of processes in the RX8 days which said that spectral de-noise and voice de-noise should be applied last so that they would be more effective. To find the right sensitivity, I used the "output [process name] only" function, which eliminates the voice and keeps the defects you want to remove. When you listen to them, you can immediately see if the process is well adjusted or if it's going to erase bits of the voice. Finally, the real difficulty is that you can't apply all the processes, because after a while this will damage the recording, and it's not enough to cancel the last process applied. You have to start all over again, setting the sensitivity lower. When you do this on all the processes and sub-processes 1 by 1 in order to test their effectiveness, it takes a lot of time, but it's a good investment because in the end, you have your batch of processes that you can apply to all your recordings with the same microphone. That's why I prefer to use a single mic with specific EQs depending on the final sound I'm looking for. Izotope RX10 and now 11, Nectar 3 and Neutron 4 are the best from this company. I was disappointed by Ozone and VEA (I must not know how to use it). Between RX 10 and 11, in terms of stand-alone (full version) and individual processes, there's almost no change. However, I find the Repair Assistant function much better, as are all the batches with pre-sets offered in the options. If you have a decent mic, my opinion is that it is better to invest in this soft rather than a more expensive new mic.

    If I have a Scarlet already with a cheaper mic, is it more sensible to buy a new very high end mic for like $1000 or should I rather upgrade both the interface and the mic? I can always upgrade my mic and follow up with an interface upgrade in a few months or longer if needed. Ive done a bit of research, and while doing pretty well recording on a budget system, Im feeling ready to splurge on the Sennheisser 416 as it seems to be a perfect mic for my living situation. Or am I wacko for getting a $1000 mic to plug into a scarlet 2i2?

      I used the 416 with a 2i2 for years! Worked great. 👍

    I have been using my SM7b for years for many of the same reasons that you point out Jay. I am a network and local radio producer. I use the SM7b for promos and certain spots. Like most mics, some EQ and processing may be necessary to get the voice track to "pop" in a mix. I also use a Shure KSM32, TLM103 and an MKH416. Each has its own place. I think of each mic as an artist would use a brush for a certain effect and tone. I also consider the acoustic environment in which the mic will be used. Jay, I always like your comparisons to reveal what each mic has to offer as well as your real world experience with them in various applications. You are the best! Thank you.

    In my hearing, the SM7B has an unpleasant resonance comparatively. The Ethos presents a more smooth,natural image and a well rounded low energy that preserves the balance of the entire freq range. I could listen to that all day. Instantly loved Mic A and thought it was the Shure. Ever use a Heil PR40 or PR30? Thanks, Jay.

    ETHOS needs 10mA on phantom power which is a bit higher than normal. Just something to be aware of. Check your interface.

    This is an excellent overview comparison of both mics. Over the years I've used the Electro-Voice RE320, the SE DynaCaster DCM8, the Shure SM58, and an array of other dynamic and condenser mics. primarily for podcasts and meditation audios. In April, I purchased the Earthworks Ethos and I couldn't be happier. To my ears, the sound is noticeably smoother and more pleasing than the SM7B. While there is no "one magic mic", the Earthworks Ethos is now my daily driver for all of the positive reasons you shared during your video. Thanks for sharing your expertise in this and your other videos. Your review of voice over submissions is super valuable for voice over talent and for anyone doing podcasts or other audio recording work.

      Hi, I would like to know what made you choose between the ethos and the Icon pro (except the $100 difference if I'm correct)?

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 13 днів тому

      @LeSaff sure! They’re both quite similar, but the icon sounded a bit brighter to me which wasn’t what I was looking for at the time. Particularly as I had several other mics that filled that niche for me already.

    Another great 'real world use' informative video. Thanks Jay. How do the Ethos and Sennheiser 416 compare for voiceover? Would the 416 be better for short promos and Ethos better for long form? be interested to see you do a comparison if possible. Cheers. All the best, Joe.

      Thanks Joe! And good question. I’d you want to hear them both I have another comparison on my channel called “finding the best VO mic” or something similar. I don’t compare them directly but they’re both featured. Re your question, you more or less hit it on the head. Both will work for just about any VO use, long or short, but the ETHOS is much flatter/darker in tone, particularly with the windscreen on, which makes it less fatiguing for longer recordings naturally. Whereas the 416 has a hefty presence boost and more “larger than life” sound, making it naturally well suited to short form. However, as I said, both will get the job done in either case. Audible uses 416s in their productions sometimes, and I use the ETHOS in ads fairly often. 😊

    Hi Jay, Thanks for your time in making this great informative video and based on that information I feel that the booth won't dampen the sound enough of a loud saxophone so that it wouldn't be heard or disturb the neighbors in an adjacent wall apartment, but I would like to ask your opinion anyway. The apartment walls a paper thin, you can actually hear the neighbors muffled speech.

    • @jaymyersvoiceover
      @jaymyersvoiceover 15 днів тому

      My pleasure! Re your question, my apartments are the same, and while the booth might not eliminate the sax it’ll still do a pretty good job bringing it down to a manageable level-especially if you opted for a triple walled model.

      @@jaymyersvoiceover hey Jay, thanks for the great and informative video! On the back of this question, i was wondering when you mentioned your wife hearing you doing impressions, was this when she was in neighbouring rooms? I have the a similar situation recording loud vocals, but I’m wondering if neighbours in a flat upstairs would hear me. Much love from London!

      @@SupraStarrr of course! If you’re in the same room you’ll experience that minimal bleed. If however you’re able to be in a separate room the isolation would likely be almost total.
