Ontario SP6 Fighting Knife. Can Combat Knives Bushcraft?

The Sp-6 is a solid knife...up until you baton knotty wood. I really enjoyed the knife and I think its a super great knife but there are some serious limitations if you go "FULL RETARD." It must have had a defect in the heat treat or steel I imagine. Ive split a lot of wood with mine. I did break an old Cold Steel kukri riving a small cedar branch years ago. It was out of carbonV and I paid over a hundred bucks for it so imo it shouldnt have broke. I wasnt hitting it hard at all. I was going to contact them but the knife was stolen with the rest of my blade collection years ago so I never got the chance. I love the SP6, so much so that I lobbed off part of my Ontario Marine Raiders blade to match it. Its like an SP6 on steroids now.😊 I dont think I will be splitting anymore wood with my SP6 from now on. Im glad I found this video cause I really like my SP6 and spent a lot of time refinishing it so I would regret breaking it. I hate the coating on those Ontario blades. It hides the lack of finishing they do. They are rough once you get the coating off and it takes a lot of sanding to make thrm decent enough to refinish. They cut way better without the black coating. I always file down down the edge thickness as well. Ive refinished 4 of them and they all perform like good knives should now imo.

The case doesn't have two pins in the pommel, Its one pin that goes all the way through the pommel and tang, it's also manufactured by Ontario knives for Case, not that it matters very much anymore, Ontario was bought out last year, they closed shop, and all the employees were terminated.

i don´t think the small chrome and vanadium additions to 1095 crovan make the steel harder to sharpen, better edge holding or more stainless, it makes this steel a little more tough, nothing else. every maker who uses 1095 should change to 80crv2 , 1095 is one of the worst knife steels

I have a Camillus NY Ka-Bar knife that I got around 1980. I still have, have carried it for many years, and it still takes a razor sharp edge. All the leather portions are treated against moisture and rot and the handle has two pins, and was dipped in the same sort of tough coating. It held up really well. I also have a Glock field knife I bought from a young Marine who carried it in two deployments in AFG. He said what you said, everybody dumped the the bayonet into the seabag and bought another knife to carry, frequently a civilian Ka-bar or clone or a Glock field knife. He said the Glock knives were popular because they were light, didn't break, attached anywhere on the Molle easily and if damaged were only about $30 to replace. He said he mostly used his dad's old Buck 110 for things like opening MREs and used the Glock knife for stuff like prying things open, cutting wire, the sort of really rough stuff that knives aren't for. It's obvious that he broke the very end of the point off, and filed it smooth, and there's one chip in the blade. Otherwise it looks just fine.

That thing is purely designed as a stabby stab stab tool to perforate your enemy and as a wedge. A gimmick it has is the bottle opener function and a good balance for throwing. Other than that, any other knife which is heavier with a wider blade should work way better for bushcrafting.

The handle is pretty cool because you can hold it in any direction it's easy to keep sharp on a honing Steel.

This is a great video, I own 2 Tom Brown trackers , the SXB and the regular size tracker like the one you have. Both great knives and if Weyland is watching they’d be wise to fix the saw on their tracker to be as efficient or better than the one on the Tom Brown.
