Trimming a yew hedge
Переглядів 1 тис.3 роки тому
80 metres of yew hedging took six hours to trim and clean up. This also included trimming the azaleas that line the same driveway. Trim the sides first then move up onto the top, this gives a nice finish. When hedge trimming make sure to check for hazards (cables, wires, etc), be safe up the ladder and have clean, sharp tools. I used a Stihl HLA 65 trimmer in this video. The blade's changeable ...

How to start a career in horticulture
Переглядів 12 тис.4 роки тому
Describing how to start a career in horticulture as schools/colleges do not provide it as a viable option for younger people. It is not accessible for people to study horticulture and this needs to change. At 18, I was left with no idea what I wanted to do with life or what to study; if I had known horticulture was a career option for me, I would have found my own way a lot sooner. There are ma...

Horticulture is the answer.
Nice video, what degree did you study to allow you to learn horticulture and hard landscaping within a year? Thanks
Office politics and working in an office is utter hell. I've worked in both white and blue collar jobs with a background in manual labour, plumbing, and irrigation and sprinkler systems when I was a teen to now. I'm 27 now and considering moving somewhere warmer with a focus on horticulture in the future. Feeling lost with what I wanted to do with life, all the benefits and opportunities, it feels like my life's opened up to so much different opportunities... Starting wage at certain jobs I"m chasing are decent paid too with reliable and sustainable work... Hands on for life, people who are able to do this kind of work and get this passionate about it are pretty much destined to live happy, fulfilled lives from my experience.
More videos please !!
Lovely and informative and positive. Thanks a lot !
Hi how much do you get paid for such a job.I can see it's a lot of hands on hard work but is it paying as well.I too want to transition to horticulture so asking. How much can you make monthly working as a Gardner. How much per job you can expect.
Lollipop lady's stand outside alot.
thanks for this!
I have been intrested in horticulture but then I am currently pursuing my graduation in botany so can I do my master in horticulture?
Been working in retail for nearly ten years. Unfortunately my previous degree didn't really offer me the kind of opportunities I'd hoped for. Started an SVQ in Horticulture and landscaping a few months ago up in Scotland. Really love it and seems like it is already proving me opertunities even at the basic level I'm at now. Totally agree with you assessment of the subject.
Why is the first book so hard to find online? I saw 2 that were pre-owned. There was another book with the same title but different cover, looked older and way cheaper. Is it the same thing? Do you know? Thank you! Maybe it's not sold in the US... ):
Thank you so much for this video! Just wanted to ask if horticulturalists all work freelance or can you get a fixed job?
Is RHS level 2 enough to start at horticulture?
Awesome recommendations, thanks!
Hello Owen, thank you very very much for your video! 🤗 My 22 years old daughter is interested in hoticulture. Which hoticulture school would you recommend to study with great teaching and affordable school fees? Thanks in advance. 🙆♀️
Charles dowding is a legend - great reference ❤
Love your chill vibe mixed with really useful horticulture tips❤

I'm very seriously considering horticulture as a second career. So active and physical, but so rewarding it seems. Thanks!
I am glad that I watch your video, thx for sharing. I am at my 30s and want to have a career change to horticulture. I don't know how to start with as apprenticeship is so competitive and lots of job turn me fown. I think I need to get some qualification at first (now I only have level one) and maybe find gardeners like you. Hope I can get experience😢
Thank you for the outstanding rundown on these books.
Can I come and work with you?
What footwear do you prefer for gardening? Does it change depending on season / weather?
I wear steel toe boots 🥾 most of the year and then wellies for jet washing or really soggy days !
This is so helpful, thank you!
Good grief, no gym membership needed for you! That was very satisfying to watch you sculpt those hedges. Nice one!
Great vid! Ok I can see that I am going to have to binge watch all your vids :D I'm in my 40s and looking for a career change for mental health reasons. I MAY HAVE QUESTIONS ^_^
This is my major and I’m excited tbh
I would like to become a gardener but I feel worried about the fitness aspect of the job. Do you need to be really really fit? I would say I have average fitness but a lot of the job postings say they want people who are strong and physically fit.
A lot of these adverts are aimed at 'men' the details of the job often include building/landscaping rather than just horticulture. I started out with below-average fitness levels and now have good stamina and strength. Gardening uses different muscles and is quite labour intensive, in a way that you can't build up at the gym, so if you're starting with average fitness I would say that's more than adequate for the job!
@@owensoutdoors6142 Thanks, that's reassuring :)
i have done graduated in bba can do horticulture if yes how can i do ?? i have no idea can someone help me..?
I love how you say Horti is for every one when I was considering and looking to get outdoors more.
I really want to get into this, I’ve grown gardens in zone 9b for multiple years now but the main thing I want to do is aquatic horticulture for aquariums and that type of stuff. I run a cleaning business for aquariums is a very fulfilling job but I really want to jjst grow aquatic plants. How did you make the transition into going into straight horticulture need the inspiration to leave my job at a deli haha
This is an awesome video. I'm thinking of launching a career in gardening and it's great to see not only another queer person in the field but also the day to day parts of the job. Kia ora from Aotearoa New Zealand!
Love this! Good luck with it all ☺️🥰

I've got the rhs book on botany. It's very nicely illustrated and presented. I want the Latin one aswell.
Paul & @owensoutdoors would you recommend any other books over this one? Looking to purchase the two RHS books Latin & Botany
Harlan, not from me on botany, I'm afraid. It's my first purchase on the topic. I am sure there are others, but I think this one has got a nice style and is not too scientific. I've also considered the Latin and Geaneology books. They would look nice as a collection.
I feel like this girl my soulmate 💟 many thanks and lots of love from Ukraine
Great video thank you! Only just found your page and I love your content :) I've just started the Rhs level 2 qualification :)
Great stuff, I'm 36 and just started my 2 year level 2 apprenticeship at Fullers mill in suffolk. I am a complete novice and loving it so far, although learning the names and correct terminology for the methods etc in gardening does seem rather daunting.
I managed to Forrest Gump my way into the horticulture industry managing IT for a wholesale greenhouse. Plants need tech support too. 😏
I’ve seen a lot of hedge cutter not very good at it , I follow the German bloke kusterez his my favourite, but you did a great job mate
Wow of all the hedge trimmer I’ve see , there weren’t good at it .it take patient and art I’ve always follow kustorez the German bloke his my favourite , but I quiet liked the way you cut the hedges job well job mate

If they pay you by the hour, you should slow down, lol.. It's a hard work! Don't kill yourself. 🌱 I know, this is just a sped up recording, but I mean the speed you work with. And if you work fast and can't slow down, charge them by the project/ job 😉
Could you please drop the music? At least make it VERY quiet in the background. It's quite irritating while trying to concentrate on what you're saying.. I just can't finish watching the video, sorry..
Please don't make the music as loud as you. Difficult to hear your words
Love from India 💓💓
So glade I found your videos - I’m finishing my bachelor in HR and feel so bad about the career that it would give me if I continued down that Path, i’m finishing that degree and going back to school to learn horticulture. Thanks !!
How is it going? I'm thinking of doing this 💖
hi very good tips thank you
How tall is your tripod ladder? I am thinking of getting one for trimming crabapple trees in our front yard and was wondering which size would be more useable for garden trees? Thank you.
I believe it’s the 6ft (1.8m) one, very useful for fruit tree pruning as you can get up through the middle of them ☺️
That's not terribly easy but you make it look easy, credit to ya! Good stuff.
Thank you! :)
