Honestly I got into horticulture because I see a great opportunity with the legalization of cannabis. Used to work in gardens as a kid and some of my teenage years. Then switched to working in several kitchens as a line cook till now. I’m 19. Working in kitchens made me fascinated about all the local farms we would use. Then slowly got into learning how certain plants grow and the science behind it. Also being a stoner lol gave me the motivation to leave the hospitality industry to go to college this fall in horticulture and minor in business.

I've always believed that gardening is a solace for the soul and I believe horticulture is essential for anybody to learn. It's the one thing we are not taught in school. It is the one of the things that can allow us to experience our inner nature and also grow compassion not just for others but for ourselves.

Hi, really like your enthusiasm. In my 40s, done many jobs over 20 + years of working, bought a house, raised a family all that good stuff. Last few years i took some time off work to get a basic education, i left school with nothing more than an Art GCSE LOL! Since getting my GCSEs and A Levels, i have secured a place to study a part time Foundation degree in Horticulture, with a view of returning to full time work at the same time, i start the course next week. I am finding it extremely difficult to secure work within horticulture that will release me on a day a week to attend college. A tree surgery company i have spoken to have urged me to apply for a job they have advertised and we can discuss the day off at interview. They are based 40 miles away from me...LOL, just cannot win at all. Other companies like garden centers local to me had offered me work a few months back, knowing i was attending college, then a few hours later they change their minds and say that they require me full time with no day release, it is so frustrating.

Sounds great! If your boss is willing to pay then I'd definitely consider this a serious option as a horticultural course can be expensive. Hi Owen, thank you for sharing your experience. What are your qualifications? How long did it take you to get the required qualification? How difficult were they on a scale 1 to 10? Did you have any academic background related to gardening or horticulture before other than private gardening?
This video is so helpful! I am nearing the age when I leave the sixth form and don't know whether to go to college or not - this has shown me that I may not actually need college to become whatever I want to within the industry. Is it easy to get an apprenticeship in rural locations?
Apprenticeships are definitely available in rural locations. Local firms are being given grants at the moment to take on apprentices. Good idea to google some that may be close to you and to check out some local colleges as often you might have to attend one day a week there too! :)
I had a question, loved your explanation of the field btw. So I’m currently interested in both being a med lab tech but I like horticulture also I’m wondering if there’s a happy medium for both. Like would they go together?
Hello Owen, thank you very very much for your video! 🤗 My 22 years old daughter is interested in hoticulture. Which hoticulture school would you recommend to study with great teaching and affordable school fees? Thanks in advance. 🙆♀️
I really enjoy gardening and want to learn more but the last few videos i've been watching were soooo boring almost put me to sleep. Maybe it's the videos that appear like they're from the 80s and very dull. I enjoy buying new plants and learning how to take care of them. I'm a more hands on person. Anyone else feel this way ? Or suggestions ? Cheers 🙏
Hi Eleanor! I work full time so I am looking to study horticulture alongside my current job until I can make the switch! - do you need a degree or are there any other ways of getting the right qualifications?
Thanks for watching! I did the city&guilds level 3 horticulture which is the best all rounder course. There are lots of online options. I have a video uploaded of this too :)
hi, I loved your vid!! I'm looking into horticulture at the moment (obviously I guess haha) but I was wondering how scientific it is as a course/subject? Science just isn't one of my strong suits, thanks so much for giving this video and your insight ❤️
Thank you so much for watching! It can be quite science heavy depending on the path you take! I found it okay to keep up with as I took a general horticulture course and it was 10% science then the rest was sort theory and practical skills. I hope this helps!
There's so many pathways with horticulture, often people don't work outside year round so it is possible to avoid high pollen season... I think you'd have to try it and see, check that you're comfortable outside when the pollen is high etc. I hope it works out !
I am in love with horticulture but I cannot see a future making 40 thousand dollars a year. Money, when you have a family, is important. If you can't take care of your family and live comfortably, you shouldn't do it as a career. I really wish the pay was better. There would be a lot more horticulturalists.
I agree, that there is a lack of pay in relation to other careers with a similar course/knowledge requirement but I find it to be a good salary and haven't struggled to pay for life since my business took off
hi ! how do i dm u? or do you have social media! I really really want more information . I’m wanting to explore horticulture and get a job at a plant nursery or a farmers market. I don’t have experience or knowledge and am just overwhelmed with where to start lol. this video was super helpful ! i would love to connect to get more info , thank you !
What do you think is the best way for a 27-year-old to get started in this career? I would love an apprenticeship but with the salary, it is very difficult.
I have some new videos on this including how to study during lockdown :) Online courses are a good option as you can do some cheaper ones that mean you can continue with your current employment and study alongside it

Apprenticeships are definitely available in rural locations. Local firms are being given grants at the moment to take on apprentices. Good idea to google some that may be close to you and to check out some local colleges as often you might have to attend one day a week there too! :)
Nice video, what degree did you study to allow you to learn horticulture and hard landscaping within a year? Thanks
I had a question, loved your explanation of the field btw.
So I’m currently interested in both being a med lab tech but I like horticulture also
I’m wondering if there’s a happy medium for both. Like would they go together?
Medicinal horticulture perhaps? Alternative or non-Western medicine? Plant medicine researcher?
@@FantazomiXroma oh nice thanks , bout to look those up now appreciate the reply
Hello Owen, thank you very very much for your video! 🤗
My 22 years old daughter is interested in hoticulture.
Cheers 🙏
Sorry to hear that, getting an actual camera soon with video editing software so this should improve
@@owensoutdoors6142 wasn't saying about your video - your one was a bit more lively haha.
@@acts.412 haha not by much though I need to make it better 😂
Your videos are so wholesome n loving ty :)))))
Thanks very much ! :)
Hi Eleanor! I work full time so I am looking to study horticulture alongside my current job until I can make the switch! - do you need a degree or are there any other ways of getting the right qualifications?
Bachelor in horticulture science is available..you can try to pursue that degree
I'm 16 and found this really helpful.
Thank you for watching, I'm very glad it was helpful !
What is the best course to get into this in the uk? Cheers for the upload
Thanks for watching! I did the city&guilds level 3 horticulture which is the best all rounder course. There are lots of online options. I have a video uploaded of this too :)
I have been intrested in horticulture but then I am currently pursuing my graduation in botany so can I do my master in horticulture?
hi, I loved your vid!!
You're awesomely beautiful!! Thanks for your time and share it.
Thank you very much for watching! :)
I’m seriously considering going into horticulture, I’ve held myself back because I have a pollen allergy. Do you think that will be an issue?
There's so many pathways with horticulture, often people don't work outside year round so it is possible to avoid high pollen season... I think you'd have to try it and see, check that you're comfortable outside when the pollen is high etc. I hope it works out !
I going to graduate high school and i’m thinking about going to a vocational school for horticulture but i’m not sure where to study
Check online courses, they will offer good diverse study and you can work alongside it too :) I have new videos on this out now
@@owensoutdoors6142 awesome!! Thank you :D
Head Cannabis Grower is my dream 💚
Hopefully one day it'll come true :)
Is horticulture degree is same as biology or plant science degree? Can a horticulturist apply for the posts of biology and plant sciences?
They can but might have to take further small courses to focus on a specialist subject as horticulture is so vast.
you motivates me ❤️
Thank you for watching! :)
I want to do masters in horticulture...which I have to choose course..?
Kinda want to leave sixth form and do an apprenticeship
One of the best decisions I made was leaving the standard route of education and studying a vocational skill
I’m interested in horticulture....how do I contact you about diving into this career ?
I am 18 and I want to go into Horticulture but I don't think I am cut out to go to college, what should I do?
I have new videos on this now, including where to study online. A great option in COVID and it's way more relaxed than continuing school
Horticulture is the answer.
I am in love with horticulture but I cannot see a future making 40 thousand dollars a year. Money, when you have a family, is important. If you can't take care of your family and live comfortably, you shouldn't do it as a career. I really wish the pay was better. There would be a lot more horticulturalists.
I agree, that there is a lack of pay in relation to other careers with a similar course/knowledge requirement but I find it to be a good salary and haven't struggled to pay for life since my business took off
I agree
:)
Nice Video
💚
I managed to Forrest Gump my way into the horticulture industry managing IT for a wholesale greenhouse. Plants need tech support too. 😏
hi ! how do i dm u? or do you have social media! I really really want more information . I’m wanting to explore horticulture and get a job at a plant nursery or a farmers market. I don’t have experience or knowledge and am just overwhelmed with where to start lol. this video was super helpful ! i would love to connect to get more info , thank you !
Thank you for watching! I have some new videos up that may help with these answers, my social media is @eleanorowens_outdoors :)
ADVICE TO THE UNEMPLOYED DONT DO A GROUNDWORK COURSE ON HORTICULTURE
YOURE EXPLOITED
What do you think is the best way for a 27-year-old to get started in this career? I would love an apprenticeship but with the salary, it is very difficult.
I have some new videos on this including how to study during lockdown :) Online courses are a good option as you can do some cheaper ones that mean you can continue with your current employment and study alongside it
Banzae trees just like in the karate kid movies
great video thanks for sharing
Hmm...20K is a nice salary?
Can be seen as low, yes! After making 11k during college it seemed like a dream to me !
I did a Horticulture and landscaping course with groundwork and it was unbelievably bad
No training how to use tools no overalls to wear
No training to speak of
Should be shut down
