Back to the basics but digging it 👌
Thanks @danmccoy2197. Glad you are enjoying the channel! 🤘🥁😊
Yes repetition fixes ALOT
@danmccoy2197, yes it does. Repetition develops muscle memory and enables you to play relaxed and flow with ease.
Tbh it just makes me mad when I mess up
I hear you and I've been there. Try remember that mistakes are a good thing, it means you are trying (and learning) something difficult. And sometimes you have to walk away and give it a rest. When you come back to it, maybe you'll nail it!
Hi! Please tell me what model of drumsticks you use in this video for practicing on the pad? Thanx!
Hi @micro_mikko. These sticks are a signature stick by Vic Firth - The Ralph Hardimon Signature Stick. They are commonly used for marching snare drum and feature a unique barrel tip and a long taper for quick rebound and control. I like to use them for practice pad as they are heavier and give my hands a good workout 🏋 In my "Start to Play Drums" video, I talk a bit about the different sticks I use for different applications, including this one. ua-cam.com/video/4M1G4JOuquE/v-deo.html Thanks for watching!
Good stuff. 👍
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching 😊
I started off with the cheapest pedal Tama makes. It didn't even have a model number on it. I think it was the hp20 or something like that. It worked I guess and I'm sure pro drummers could rock that pedal. I used it for several months and decided to splurge a little bit so I bought the Speed Cobra 910LN. I immediately thought it helped my playing but I'm sure that was all in my head to justify the purchase tho.
@lobbyrobby - I honestly do think that a quality pedal can make a huge difference. The Speed Cobra is also a nice pedal. Similarly, I was using a Roland pedal for years and didn't think much about it. But when I bought this Yamaha, I couldn't believe how responsive it was and how much easier it was to play fast, intricate patterns. Worth every penny!
Here's my story. 1 year ago I'm sitting on the couch and I come across the Drumeo video of Chad Smith learning "The Kill" from 30 seconds to Mars. Right then, I decided I wanted to learn the drums. I started immediately tapping on my sofa with 2 spoons. The next morning I drove to a local music store and bought an acoustic set. Sat down and quickly realized how damn loud they are haha. I practiced for about 1 month on that kit and found myself wanting to play late at night but I wanted to be respectful to my neighbors. I doubt they could hear me tho. So I bought an ekit. A Roland td-17kvx2. At first I hated it. It just felt weird and fake. However, after awhile I got used to it. I played only that for a couple of months. Then I sat down on the acoustic set and hated that 😂 I'll probably sell the acoustic set and stick with the ekit. It's just so convenient. I'll have to check out your videos. Subbed 👍
Thanks for sharing your story and welcome to the channel! 👍I've seen that video and Chad Smith is one of my favorite drummers, amazing chops but also you can just see the joy he has playing. The electronic kit can be an adjustment for sure but I find them so versatile and my neighbors thank me for it. But I do once crank up my monitor once in a while so they still know I'm there LOL
Off shore rigs? And just think, you could have been a famous Rockstar but you decided to tie the knot instead 👎 haha. J/K
haha, thanks for thinking I could have been a rockstar 🙂 but, as I say in the video, I wouldn't change a thing. Maybe I'll be a UA-cam star instead. haha
I'm all over the place with my practice but I feel like I'm learning
@lobbyrobby. It can be easy to get distracted and go in many directions. Happens to us all. Hopefully this video can give you a little structure without being too regimented. Good luck!
Good advice Steve. If anyone wants to get to a high standard practice practice. It may be a bit boring but the result are worth it. It's all about self discipline and not find excuses to avoid it.
Well said Raymond. Discipline and consistency are key. And if you focus on the three keys in this video, it will help you make the most of your time. We all have such busy lives, no one wants to waste a minute! Thanks as always for your support!
Welcome back. 🙂
Thanks! It's great to be back
Hey everyone! We've been away a few months for personal reasons but we're back baby! And we have a great new video on how to optimize your drum practice sessions. So check out the video and tell us in the comments what you'd like to see next now that we are back.
I prefer Tama Dyna scync
@@markferguson1530 the Tama is also a great pedal!
used these when playing drums when other bands have backlined, I love the easy adjustment that these type of thrones have, definitely gonna get one
@tylerking - Yes, one of the best features is the quick easy height adjustment! No more spinning or manual adjusting
Nice video 👍… with greetings from Romania 😎🤟
@@bvv11980 Multumesc! I appreciate your support!
I have one too and I liked that you explained how to make the adjustments since I had no idea 😂. Would you be able to make a video to go more in depth on all the adjustments?
haha.......I know you are being sarcastic but thanks for the comment and subscribing. I will consider doing a more detailed follow-up for sure, maybe even a live Q&A session 😉
@ haha no I wasn’t I generally didn’t have an idea on how to work this pedal since it’s pretty complex, and your video helped a lot ! I would love a in depth video or a Q&A
Hey, Steve… Nice Video!!! Nice production quality, lighting, cameras, studio, on-screen music notation, Great Editing… really high quality all around. As a fellow drummer & teacher (and someone that will hopefully actually post my 1st video in the next 5 yrs😂 haha) If it’s possible to put your music/cheat-sheet/guide behind the camera, so you don’t have to look off to the side, I think that would be even better. Or, just stop the camera before each section and get it clearly in your head. My personal opinion (not that you asked😮) is that you don’t worry about others thoughts or comments, too much… unless they help you. Definitely don’t let them slow you down. As to why another paradiddle video?? Bc, you might share something different that helps even just one person… and so the drummers that resonate with your teaching style don’t have to go elsewhere for info. They might want to hear your take on it. We’re Not trying to compete with the other greats out there. Of course we want info, but most people are here for the personalities. So, I say keep rocking and shining your light for anyone that’s interested. All the best to you. 🕺👍
@tuknchuk Thanks for the kind words and suggestions. I really appreciate them all! It's a learning experience and I try to make each video a little better than the last. I do hope to resonate with our audience and everyone is unique. So, I'll keep being me and hope that I can connect with others and share the light and the joy of music! Keep rockin' Chuck! 🥁🤘
Your posts should come with a warning notice. Groupies are not interested in drummers. The only ones interested in me are ones that have been groupies when The Beatles were on the go. If I had known this before I would have taken up the guitar or singing.
Lol, singers and guitarists have all the luck! 😂
What’s the maximum heighth, as I sit up high..?
Hi @roybeckerman9253! The standard model rises to a max of 24" but there is an extended version available that will go to a height of 30". Hope that helps!
What drum throne are you using and how do you find it? I'm curious to get people's thoughts on what they think is the best.
I think it's worth making the investment and buying the best you can afford. How much do these run out at? What is the best way to stay cool while drumming. If you are playing in a packed venue it can get really hot and exhausting.. You mentioned ghost notes in one of your earlier videos. What are they? I have heard the term used about guitar guitar playing.
So many questions! haha The Roc n Soc runs about $225 USD, depending on where you buy. And I definitely think it's worth the investment.
Regarding staying cool....... fans are a must and a lot of drummers consider it part of the kit. It can get hot and so always important to stay hydrated with electrolytes and water.
And finally, ghost notes are subtle notes played at a low volume to enhance a beat or fill. They are played "in between" the main notes and add nuance by filling the spaces with almost unheard notes. I'm planning to do some covers shortly and will demonstrate. A good example to listen to is Rosanna by Toto. Jeff Picaro plays a lot of subtle notes between the main notes of the beat.
Nice choice with the ergonomic saddle style.
Yes, honestly it's the best piece of kit I've bought recently. Really makes a difference for comfort and being able to play longer, without pain. 🥁🤘🤘😊
As a drum teacher I know the importance of paradiddles but why another video on them. We’ve known this stuff for decades
@lukeskywalker3786 Thanks for the comment! What videos would you like to see?
I made myself a playlist with songs I love and I know very well. So it makes drumming more fun. I combine excercises and jamming to keep it interesting. So it doesn't get boring
@HaulinWulf. Great idea! My routine usually combines some hand technique / rudiment practice, some kit exercises and new challenges and then finish up with relaxing and playing songs that I love and/or want to learn. Having fun is our "why" and is so important. Thanks for the great advice for everyone following!
Evensome of the really big name drummers run into problems because the dont practice. Its so easy to abandon the parts of your playing that need improving and just play the stuff you can do well. So it does require a certain amount of self-discipline and focus to practice effectively.
Absolutely. It all depends on the level to which you aspire to rise but consistency and working on the hard parts is key. It's easy to get out of practice but it's also easy to get back in the swing of things by making even a small commitment and staying disciplined to that commitment. 🥁🥁🤘🤘😊😊
I think you are right. When it comes to getting to the top level as a player of any instrument, it really has to be an obsession. Talent is not enough, you really have to put the hours in. That's fine if it's your goal. I feel people at that level tend to get pretty upset if they make a mistake that takes the fun element out of it. I think its better to play for enjoyment and just keep that beat going
Thanks Raymond. It's ok to work hard at becoming the best you can be but you don't have to play complexed, intricate patterns to enjoy drumming or to play with most musicians, or to get an audience moving and enjoying the music. Often, simple is better. It's about creating a feel, a groove rather than blowing people's minds! 🥁 🤘🤘😊
Good stuff!
Thanks for the visit @Crg- Hope you are enjoying the channel! 🥁🤘😊
@@rootsofrhythm Indeed I have been.
What do you think is the most important benefit of playing the drums? 🥁🤘❤🩹
Well done, I am early 50's and attempting to re-learn to play with a loose grip.
Thanks @gavinremedios7953 ! Good to hear from you and about your journey. One of the things I also want to focus on is playing with a looser grip and improving my push/pull and rebound techniques. Us old boys can still learn new tricks😂 🥁🤘
👍
@crg- Thanks for your continued support. Let us know any topics you'd like us to cover 🥁👍
Today's video is a bit different. It is a lesson that you can follow, but it also demonstrates the fundamentals that I'm working on in my own practice. What are you currently working on? And what would you like to see us cover on Roots of Rhythm? This channel is for you and we really value your input to make it better! Thanks! 🥁🥁🤘🤘😊
When you say affordable how rich do you have to be to think of it as affordable? I think it's better to buy the best equipment you can afford. Maybe a good motivator to put more into practicing rather than give up when you hit those brick walls. How about buying second hand equipment ? What are the issues there? How about acoustic v electronic?
I agree, it's best to buy the best that you can afford. For me, this Yamaha pedal was a good compromise. It was not the cheapest but also not the most expensive. But I felt from my testing that it was comparable to the high end pedals. There are certainly cheaper pedals but they didn't seem as durable to me. I do feel I got a good value and Yamaha is quality. Second hand is a good alternative to buying new, especially for someone just starting out. As with most things, next to new is often much cheaper. But a kick pedal can go through some heavy wear and tear, so make sure it's not been beaten up badly. As far as kits go, I usually recommend buying electronic to start for beginners. It's a cheaper alternative, there are some good starter kits out there, and they are more versatile. If you stick with it and want to move up to something better suited for live performance, acoustic kits are the next step. They are definitely a bigger investment. Hope that helps!
I love my Yamaha pedals! Quick tip: when using against Roland mesh heads the felt beater will damage those. The plastic beater of the old Roland pedal will work on the bass mesh head, the only downside is that you cannot use the Yamaha beater weights
@mannykeller Thanks for that tip. I had the same issue and resolved it exactly the same way. Good tip for the others following!
👍
Thanks @Crg. Great to see you watching every week!
I was waiting for the bandages and oxygen to come out. I looked again and saw it was paradiddles and not paramedics. Another good video but if I practice any more I will need Paramedics
😆😆🤣🤣 Yes, you do have to pace yourself. Too many paradiddles will bring the paramedics. 🥁🥁🥁 ⚕⚕😷😷⚕⚕
I have been watching some bands on youtube. I find myself listening more intently now to the drummers. Cant work out exactly what they are playing just beginning to get an understanding how it fits in to the song.
Good for you! You will find that now that you've started, its hard not to notice. And deciphering what the drummer is playing will get easier the more that you learn and practice. Even seasoned drummers have to stop and listen carefully to figure it out sometimes. Don't hesitate to ask us here on RoR any questions you might have!
I played myself some blisters yesterday. Guess I have to practice tomorrow then ;) Thanks for the new lessons!
@HaulinWulf! Great to see you back! Yes, consistency is the key! If the hands have blisters, practice your feet LOL 😉🥁🥁🤘🤘

That's great Kristopher. You will get great value from any of these. Thanks for following us! 🥁🤘😊
Why are they called Grace notes. Steve? I have heard of them on blues guitar playing but not on drumming.
That's a good question Raymond. Grace notes apply to any musical instrument and the term refers to softer, more subtle notes played before or after the actual note. Not sure of the actual origin of the term but grace notes are used to add texture or embellish the main melody or rhythm, to "decorate". In drumming, a lot of grace notes are used on the snare to create shuffles and other variations of the basic beats. We have a lot more grace note lessons coming soon! 🥁🤘
@rootsofrhythm I looked it up on Google and it started to become very complicated for a non musician. I thought a grace note meant a free note. As in a note played outside of the scale or key that you are in. Immediately followed by the next note in that scale otherwise it would not sound right. It is used to give the piece more grace as in poise or elegance. INot the meaning it has in grace of God. Jimmy page used grace notes in his Stairway solo. So in drumming its exactly the same thing. I think this demonstrates that some musical theory is going to make you a much more creative player I am going to shut up now. I don't want people to think I actually know anything about music.
Haha, no need to shut up. Our hopes are to make this platform a place for discussion, for the community to feel comfortable asking anything. I'm certainly no expert on guitar grace notes but one thing about drum grace notes that is similar to what you are saying is that drumming grace notes are not counted, they are outside of the basic rhythmic structure. For example, you don't count the grace note of the flam or the two grace notes of the drag but rather they come slightly before the primary stroke which is counted. So it is similar in that it's outside the basic structure.
Awesome stuff! Will definitely look into a couple of these and really liking the Fundamental 40 at the end! 🙂
Thanks! Glad you are enjoying the videos. Stay tuned, lots more Fundamental 40's will be coming soon! 🥁🤘😊
