1900's 18" inch Lathe walk-around R.K. Leblond
This is a 100 plus year old lathe restoration project. Im doing a brief restoration and adding a 1950's Willys jeep transmission to avoid using the counter shaft. I plan on putting more machining content out on this lathe when it is finished as well as content on the Grizzly Bridgeport milling machine. There are many things that I plan on doing and would like all to see and hopefully learn something from my mistakes.

In this video I will be setting up a backlash arm for my 1900's R.k. Leblond Lathe on my milling machine table so I can bore the hole round and stick a bushing in it.

    These machines no longer have a price, they are a jewel, their value is infinite, the money they ask for will never be enough

    I have a 1915 Greaves Klusman lathe and your tailstock and saddle look exactly like mine? Very interesting and beautiful machines. I am going to watch your video and walk around mine and see how many parts are the same . Great video and thank you

      It’s funny how all these old lathes bare similarities. I did get it running but the belt pulley system for the transmission and lathe was to much for the electric engine. I am in the process to switch it over to chain and sprocket. I will post some videos when it’s running the way i intended

      You can see the MFG logo/plate/stamp on the last support leg, but it's too blurry to read.

      johnboy pruitt I agree, I can’t find much on these. The 16” lathe were more popular

    This pulsating noise is coming because of the rpm is closer to the machines natural frequency. Yes, it's physics. the only way to fix this by adding some extra weight to your machine to shift the natural frequency from the rpm you are trying. If you even add a sand bag on the base this might add 40 kgs and may shift the noise. Try it and let us know. Your fear that higher speed will blow it up may not be true. As the higher speed may be far away from machines natural frequency may run smoothly. just go one step up and see if the pulsating noise is gone or not.

    Very simple fix,put a few drops of oil in the splines where the draw bar is,and ready to go.

    I just broke the set screw in the spindle in the same mill. So I can relate to your difficulties. I wish you all the best.

    I have a 3102 also . Its replacing my 0704. Im cncing it right now. Great little mill. I chose it over the ZX45 for its weight. Im really happy with mine compared to the POS G0704 . Put up some more vids of the little machine I love watching them.

    I have the same mill, mine made a similar noise. It was the pulley setscrew on the motor. Nothing some loc-tite didn't fix. Good luck

  • @lunarmation
    @lunarmation 10 років тому

    another Grizzly 'deluxe' feature... Power Saver Mode... the motor is only powered half the time. Uses half the power and 1/3 of the cost of a motor that can maintain a constant RPM.. : )

    I am not an expert but I think you'll find your running that size cutter way to fast and it could be causing a resonance in the spindle due to the excessive speed?

  • @donaldhappel2163
    @donaldhappel2163 10 років тому

    You might try taking the belt off the motor pulley and see if the vibration is in the motor or the pulleys or the spindle.. Then take the belt off of the spindle pulley and see if the motor and intermediate pulley are causing vibration. Next, re-attach spindle belt and try it without the present cutter installed. Cutter may not be balanced. Also, make sure the quill is locked down.

  • @ROCKNTV1

    Your machine is similar to the one i signed the check on, today know doubt, has what i call harmonics probably do to insufficient pre load on the bearings, With the quill locked some of that might go away. use the quill to drill, and the knee to feed z.

    bro, not trying to be a punk i watched all your videos of this mill, those chips are hot arent they,,, but you had pushed back in my chair when you wiped them with your hand and the spindle was still turning, I dont play safty nasi even at my house but that is a bad habit, that machine will molest your fingers like they were never yours, k, nuff said now your spindle noise , That machine prob need a bit of break in time on the bearings, for several reasons,1 being grease made of chewed crayons.
