I watched you easily move the PCM Prodigy 1 and was curious regarding their weight (thereby the rigidity of the speaker cabinet and the resonance frequency control). The PCM specification states 4.5kg. By comparison the entry level ATC speaker SCM7 is specified with a weight of 7.5kg. The Prodigy 1 is £1250 and the SCM7 is £1100. So, the speakers are in a similar price category. I guess the design key requirement is how the speakers sound and this is a subjective assessment.

@@SteveD-m6z weight isn’t that important I suppose. PMC has quasi transmission line so the cab is fairly well braced. I prefer the little ATC’s, they need a bit of power to sing though.

I had an original Quad 405 , ........it sounded way better with the limiter reistors in place ( 50 watt instead of the 100 - to protect the electrostaic speakers ) . SS does has difficulies to get the instruments and singers becomming free one of another , with air and sace as well as ceating more body to each. How does the new Quad performs in this " quality " ...? I would like to test/use it with a high quality tube preamp ........only that's dificult today .

Perfect review for me, great video mate. Serviced and recapped Meridian 557 owner here, very happy. Bought my 557 2nd hand too, but was a good recapped and serviced example by Ex Meridian engineer. Run mine into a PS Audio BHK Preamp. Been curious about benefits of going Monoblock over single amp, but PS Audio prices are too spicy for me. Was curious about the Quad Artera power amps, perhaps an upgrade for the future for my system? Still that thing though about cost vs improvement. Why not get another serviced 557 and biamp with THOSE? Single Meridian is 200watts @ 8ohms, doubling up will only improve the headroom and Meridian "grunt" that its got. Would need to hear the Quad Mono's in my system to make a call, If they were night and day better than a single Meridian... would probably buy them. But they are £3K a pair, whereas a good example serviced Meridian would be just over a grand. ... and I could reuse my existing 557. No shame on the Quads, its just that the 557 is a BEAST of an amp, as you know. Came across your video just as I was thinking about that again - the UA-cam algorythym is spooky!

Hi very great review as always Thank you for this analysis of a great speaker from a great brand at the cost of sounding trivial i think that drivers make the sound in the end In this case i think that the suspect is the tweeter What is stiff can sound clean but hard for resonances not tamed enough I am more on DIY so i would have no issue in trying different tweeters in place of the originals I mean the cabinet must be just great, the woofer very good indeed, the xover wirings and binding posts i guess decent I would experiment with some soft domes tweeters known for great sound Something from Vifa Seas as an example Just one last word about cabinets I have the feeling that most people do not understand how a cabinet is important These cabinets should be quite state of the art I would keep them for ever Great speakers Thanks again and kind regards gino

Hi thank you very much for your alway great comparisons one issue often overlooked in small speakers is their mass i.e. weight Increasing mass moves the box resonances down in frequency and possibly below the speaker working range The sa1 at 5.5 kg are just too light Look at how heavy are the very best minimonitors around Even 20kg/each a light cabinet will resonate just in the delicate midrange blurring the sound I do no what to sound extreme but take the drivers and xover of the sa1 and place them in the 5 kUSD/each Magico A1 cabinet and the sound will be quite similar Maybe i little lighter on bass but possibly even better in the midrange The cabinet is so important and people dont realize that I made some experiments and i was shocked by the differences I mean same drivers xover and different cabinet Like night and day There is a good test to check for box resonances Let the system warm up At a certain point in absence of resonances the speakers should seem like disconnected from the system and the sound completed detached from the boxes I love Spendor speakers a lot Like all best british speakers by the way

Probably a 200w amp or lower wattage but good quality amp like Ayre integrated. Never felt 800 series to be bright. I think they have a ton more resolution, soundstage, depth and timbral quality. Both are rather neutral in tone. The solid aluminium body and original stands are the standouts for the celestions. I think John Atkinson uses the stand for his reviews.
