How I Became a Vet Tech Specialist (VTS)
Thank you for taking out the time to make this video.
Hi, I am NCRVT # 269. I know absolutely that I loved my job. My body retired due to the stress of my ageless desire to do all heavy work for them. The ones with ties on bosses who made $100,000 a year and I still got peanuts . So now the problem with me is I’m a leader in a follower position. Abuse is all I can think of. I was tortured at home by sig others while family hated my choice to be poor. Then 3 jobs to support my up to 19 or 25 counting wildlife. Then sometimes my four legged best 🎉 syndrome type !!!$ Spiderweb of scocios. so at work I thought $3.25 an hour was enough to get me away from him. I made 375 at Burger King before to put myself through school. I got paid peanuts for 20 years. I got treated like dirt by the top of the vet school. I tried to commit suicide and was accused of stealing drugs then they ruined my reputation forever but yet I was a wonderful happy veterinary technician and I am a wonderful happy human being for being one. I can’t change mean, but I changed me. I was so an intensive care unit and anesthesia to large and small animals .! I mean 2100 pound Shire 2200 pound Bull, horses, sheep ,goats, cows, gorillas, and iguanas and everything in between including two BIG cats -dream 💞plus small animals. I wouldn’t trade us for the world and I know there’s a place in heaven for all of us even little old sensitive me couldn’t help it be what I wanted to be.😅😊
Love your content !!!! ❤ Thank you so much !
Thank you so much!
Hey, just want to say thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! I'm a vet student and your videos have really helped me a lot❤ Keep up the good work!!
Thank you so much! Good luck with school!
Please keep making videos! These are great references as a teacher :)
Thank you! More to come soon (maybe this week)!
Im a current cna looking to transition into vet tech. Ive done it all with humans, I feel like I'd be more useful providing care for animals now.
Definitely look into getting a job as a TA, it’s a great place to start.
TPR for suture removal? Hmm
thank you for this, although i am a sophomore in high school and finally narrowed down the careers i want to have when i grow up to only two; psychologist and veterinary technician. i am really indecisive and this video really helped me recognize the pros and cons of the job so its easier for me to decide in the future !!! 💞
omg yes please make a video on how to interpret capnograph!
Writing it up now!
Hello Dr. Jennifer, I watched your video on UA-cam, and it was very helpful! I wanted to ask if you could recommend any practical resources where I can learn all the fundamentals of advanced veterinary care and surgery techniques. Ideally, it would be great if they’re available for free
Unfortunately most of the resources I would recommend are books. Silverstein Hoopers ECC book is a must have, and Lumb and Jones anesthesia book, as far as surgical techniques that is a bit out of my realm. For background pathophysiology the website deranged physiology is excellent.
Hey Jennifer, thank you for making this. How often should we have arterial BP monitoring while on the ventilator?
That’s a great question. I assume you mean invasive arterial blood pressure via an arterial catheter. I like invasive blood pressure (IBP) monitoring in cases where there is 1) known hypotension, 2) risk for severe, sudden hypotension (risk of life threatening blood loss), and 3) cases where I may need ABG monitoring. In human medicine they have actually done studies that show that IBP doesn’t improve outcome, but does decrease the amount of vasopressors used. So, in those cases we will try for an arterial catheter, but we don’t delay the surgery and continue attempts if we can’t get it. The one exception are known or suspected pheochromocytoma removals because we know there is a high risk for massive blood pressure swings.
Can you plz... Advice the book for basic understanding in ECG of small animals..and excellent explanation 👍 by you.
Thank you! I liked this one when I was first learning about ECG. a.co/d/aXzd4ES
I done my 2 years diploma in animal health care and technology in India so what should I do now , if I want to settle in canada???
I’m not very familiar with Canadian vet tech regulations, but here is a website that may be helpful. www.canadianveterinarians.net/public-resources/careers-in-veterinary-medicine/registered-veterinary-technician-technologists/
Pretty helpful. Thanks !
Thank you!
Why would you stop making more videos
More of a long break than a stop 😅 the videos take a lot of time and with how busy the clinic was in the summer I didn’t have time! Uploading a new one tonight though.
You saved me
Thank you!
Woaahhh
I have a huge passion for animals and wildlife but im afraid of customer interaction because sometimes im not able to articulate myself well, currently i work overnight retail but im ready to find a career
Overnight ICU is always an option! Look into getting a job as an entry level overnight TA to get a taste of it.
Great video, been contemplating going down this path for a little bit now. And I feel you thoroughly explained the good and bad. The bad... thinking about not saving an animal and then dealing with an angry owner has to be incredibly tough. But like you say at the end... even if it is 25% I bet everytime you save one makes up for 100 bad ones. Thank you!!
It’s definitely hard but rewarding everyday. Try getting a job as an entry level TA to see if you like it!
thank you for making things easy to understand, this was my long pending topic to cover and you explained it perfectly.
Thank you so much!
more subtitles would help
I agree, sadly it’s pretty difficult to get subtitles in the really long videos. But, I think the UA-cam closed captioning button on the video itself does a fairly decent job with the auto generated subtitles.
Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
I would love to know the consequences and treatment of each arrythmia. I was watching your video a few months ago because my bulldog had 2 episodes that caused him to collapse. His body was limp but he would track me with his eyes. It took 10 to 20 min for him to return to normal. We did and ecg and ultrasound and sent to a cardiologist. They said they noticed and arrythmia on the ecg,did not identify what kinda, listed ones common to the breed but recommended a holter monitor to determine the frequency. His ultra sound was normal on every aspect of the assessment. He passed away before we got the holter monitor. He laid down while walking through the kitchen and was instantly non responsive. He was 13 and the love of my life. I tried so hard to learn so i could ask the right questions. Your videos are quality and helped me when i was helping him fight for his life. 😢
I’m so sorry to hear this. It’s harder than words can express to lose one of our family. It sounds like you did everything you could for him and he was lucky to have a mom who fought for him. It sounds like his work up was appropriate. Arrhythmias can be tricky, they so seldom look textbook like the way you learn about them. And they can be very intermittent. I’d be worried your guy was going into episodes of v-tach based on what you’re describing, and it sounds like the holter would’ve been the appropriate next step. Most acquired arrhythmias can’t be cured, we just attempt to control them for a time, but they’ll eventually stop responding to treatment. I hope you find solace knowing you did everything you could for him.
@@jenniferlyonsvts yes, your opinion, whether it is good or bad news to me is extremely valuable. Your videos have helped me take care of him in the past. I'm so grateful to the time and effort you put into learning and also into explaining in your videos. Thanks again
Jennifer thank so much a video
Thank you for watching!
could you please continuing explain that topic
I’ll try to get more anesthesia videos planned!
Thank you for this data, it’s very helpful to hear as someone who’s looking into going into this field
Good luck with deciding!
Thank you for taking the time to make these videos! I work as a vet tech assistant and appreciate all your educational content. I am hoping to go to tech school in the future and these videos help so so much!
Thank you so much, and good luck!
This was super helpful! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you!
Can you please share the source from where you had studied these conditions
The sources are many. Silverstein hoppers critical care book, multiple cardiology books, many many many articles from pubmed, deranged physiology, Norkus tech manual, Andrea Steeles critical care book.
Appreciate the breakdown, from kindergarten to University.
Thank you!
Is it possible to use a shygmomanometer with a pediatric cuff to take cat blood pressure? I would like to learn but the doppler blood pressure machine seems very expensive. Thank you for this video. Just discovered and subscribed to your channel.
Thank you! Yes the Doppler sphygmomanometers work with all the normal pediatric cuffs we use in vet med.
Thanks for sharing . Very informative ❤ 🐾
Thank you!
Are there any jobs you could work with a bachelors degree in veterinary technology that don’t include emergency medicine / having to work weekends and holidays? I’m considering getting a degree from Penn Foster but it seems like no one is hiring Vet techs where I live, I’m not sure if I could get any other jobs with that degree or if it’d just be useless unless I move somewhere else.
Penn Foster is great if you want to take the program to become eligible to take the VTNE. It requires a very strong will for independent studying and research. If you do better in a class or group setting, this program will be a struggle. Also, I believe the degree from Penn Foster for vet techs is an associates. And, many of the courses will not transfer to any other schools. It looks like ten of their classes might transfer to another school for academic credit elsewhere. If transferring your credits doesn’t matter to you then this isn’t an issue. In general, the program is meant to give you background info on vet tech related courses, and to make you eligible to take the VTNE to become certified or licensed in your state. It depends on the state and area you live in if that will give you a big hiring boost or not. Some regions or states care and have strict laws about what licensed vs un-licensed techs can do, and some do not.
Can you please do a video on examining radiographs I know the basics of what I’m seeing but would like to get better at identifying different pathologies
That’s a great idea! Will do!
I’m an experienced technician and still want to watch every single video you make! You explain things so well and even the most basic videos are so helpful and a great refresher on knowledge not commonly used or easily forgotten! Thank you so much❤

Compassion fatigue is an excuse for not having any empathy!
It’s actually been suggested that compassion fatigue is really a misnomer for empathetic distress fatigue, as many in the field still have compassion but lose their empathy.
@@jenniferlyonsvts It's called "Psychopathy" and still needing a paycheck.... If, one can't empathize with the individual patient then they can't be effective and do the job right for the patient!
Amazing to see you on here! One of the best techs I have ever worked with! Definitely will be watching
Thanks Ashley!
Great video! Thanks for filling a necessary void on UA-cam. Veterinary technician info is extremely sparse. Thank you!

Beneficial in what regard?
@@jenniferlyonsvts Any topic you explain , will definitely be useful : ER , practical field, Neuro , cardio , Anaesthesia, surgery, specific surgical procedures for each operation As I said before In Jennifer we trust ❤️

Thank you so much! More soon
Very good video! Thank you!!
Thank you so much!
as a student working in the vet med field , THANK YOU !!!!
Glad to hear they help!
I live in Georgia. The everage vet tech salary is 15$ to 22$ per hour. How is that I work construction and make more without any sort of degree? That is killing my want to work with animals whom I love. Complete bullshit that you guys barely make a living wage.
It’s definitely not appropriate for the work we perform and the knowledge base we have. Hoping to continue seeing the average wage increase with time.
Thank you! Clear, concise, and a great review. Also, love the kitties. 🐱 Appreciate you. -Jarrett
Thank you so much! They’re the true stars 😂
❤❤❤
❤️
Is emergency animal medicine more monetarily lucrative?
Typically, as it is harder to staff and has a high degree of turnover therefore compensation tends to be higher. Also these days many ER’s are corporate which are known for higher pay and better benefits (although of course there are some exceptions).
Amazing! Tks a lot 👏🏻
Glad you liked it!
Great one !!
Thank you!
