Upgrading The Shifter On My BMW F30!
Today, I installed a knock-off E9X M-Performance style shift knob on my F30.
As most know, the BMW F-chassis shift knob and boot are one-piece, so I wanted to make a visual guide on how to separate the two pieces for this install.
The link to the shift knob in this video can be found here -

The 335i decided to drain all of its coolant.. I’m just glad it happened in front of my house! Plastic or metal
It seems the body of it is metal due to it being so heavy but the top and bottom rings are most definitely plastic
Hey will the engine overheat if you don’t have a cover on it ?
Nope mines been running fine for months no issues 👍
No, they won't overheat. The engine covers are really there for noise cancellation.
main things that were recommended at 100k was 1.timing chain replacement and 2. fluid change (transfer box etc), but the audis (i have had 3 so far - A6, A5 now RS5) are really great cars and reliable..
I do miss it sometimes! Glad you're enjoying yours
Head unit not working aint good. Did u end up fixing it?
I actually bought this car about a year ago. The tick you heard was coming from some really old, maybe even factory, spark plugs. I noticed that when revving in park or neutral the tick was hardly noticeable. It was only when the engine was under load that it became pronounced. I did a bunch of maintenance and only after changing the plugs did the tick disappear.
@@jameshernandez5386 Interesting, what state are you in?
Ey question can I put a blow off valve on my BMW 230i 2019
I wouldn't recommend it, although doable, it's pointless.
I’m looking to trade in my 23’ A4 for a b9/b9.5 S4, they are at a STEAL right now. The ones I’m looking at have 20-60k miles, before this video I was skeptical on the mileage but after hearing your perspective it has gave me much more confidence. Great video ! With the sport package how’s the diff on corners? Have you tried power sliding?
Get a B9.5 if possible, the early B9 had some issues to work out. My infotainment kept shutting off mid drive, and my engine was making an awful sound like the rocker arms. I traded it in at 86k. But it was an awesome vehicle, I’d recommend a B9.5 if possible.
Why the big secret on the price?
When you were saying high mileage, I was thinking 100-150k, not 80k. I would sure hope a car with only 80k miles would still be pretty decent.
At the time this video was taken, this was one of the higher mileage examples even listed for sale. For a 2018 S4, 80k miles is high in comparison to other market exmaples.
@@BrandonFinleyx It's a shame you needed to part with it. I've seen plenty of these cars reach double that mileage. Sounds like you may have had the dreaded rocker arm issues that plagued that year.
nice car!
Thanks!
good car and a good sound
Thank you!! 👍🏻
sick🤟🏽🤟🏽
I appreciate you bro!
Can I use the bms Maf sensor screws when I put the stock one back on?
Unfortunately these took their own specific screw. But I'm sure you can find something at a hardware store. That's what I did.
How has the reliability been since? Might have the chance to buy a 2019 with 80k
Any issues come up since?
i did plugs and coils on my b9.5 at 40k and ill do the plugs again at 60k and i do liquid molly oil changes every 4k
Have you gotten a check engine light for the intake?
This will not throw a check engine light, unless installed improperly!
The question is... why? It's just moronic to buy a high mileage car. If you can't afford it with low miles then buy something within your price range lol
Is it still worth it? There is a 2018 s4 for sale with 60k miles. Any major/pricey issues getting close to the 100k point?
Timing chain would be my biggest concern. Make sure yo see how much timing it's pulling every so often. Unfortunately, these engines are kind of backwards. So, the timing chain faces the firewall. So the engine needs to be dropped in order to replace. They are great cars as long as you maintain them properly. Which most people don't and then those people bitch about reliability when they are bad car owners
I am thinking about buying a 2018 B9 with about 60k on it. It’s my friend’s car and he’s asking 20k for it. It’s the prestige trim. Thoughts?
post more!
Will do! :)
Thats the thing about audi they rust… the 340i g20 doesn’t rust.. take a look at any bmw after the e generation, they dont rust. My friends 2014 435i that has 110k miles has no rust. But audi design and look is way better than bimmer. Not to mention the ride is smooth. The bmw feels like a tank and almost entices you to speed. I prefer the audi for daily but unfortunately I talked with techs and they told me the 340i is more reliable than the c43 and s4. So ill probably go for the 340
Do you have a tune? I have a 2022 530i b48 and i get like 10% of that sound
Car is not tuned, it doesn't flutter like that when driving, only when stationary. It just sucks in and out when driving.
@@BrandonFinleyxthat’s weird mines the complete opposite although it does make noise when i first start it up in park
Nice video !
wsmfp reference on the plate?
Do yall think a 2018 s4 with 90k miles for $25k worth it?
See, I personally wouldn't buy any car with that many miles because I don't trust people to do proper maintenance. Last thing you want is a premature timing chain failure or transmission problems because some cheap ass couldn't be bothered to spend the money to maintain it
Im almost at 100k with my 2018 B9 S4. So far only damaged components have been the engine mounts and oil filter housing. Got those replaced at 90k miles
If you don't fix those small rust spots, it will turn into a rust bucket in 4-5y... In the back, you got rust since something hit your bumper, which compressed the paint on the body.
My 2007 s3 the radio randomly goes off as well😂
80k is "high mileage" tells ya whatcha need to know lol.
I’m in the market for a 2023 S4 but I keep hearing bad reviews about it
i have a 2019 audi s4 b9. when should i change the oil? and how do i know when to?
got my 2015 B8.5 79k close to 80 about 2 and a half years ago, got 83k on it, Car has been great, Love the front end of the B9
I got the rocker arms at 94k mikes definitely get it done before it dies damage and while you’re in there do your water pump and thermostat, 👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽 I’m in NJ for reference
Was yours a 2017 build date?
Im looking at a 18 s5 and live in NJ too!! I plan on doing rovkers as preventative maintenance, how much did that cost you?
Video of the knocking/tapping sound would've been helpful! Did you verify it was the rockers at all? Check filter for any metal? Boroscope through engine filler? The dealership didn't notice the knocking/tapping on trade in?
My noise only happened under load, and it was hard to differentiate. I never determined the actual noise, other than it being in the engine bay. My oil filter seemed a TAD flakey but wasn't exactly shining either.
I bought this car and after changing the spark plugs the tick disappeared. It seemed the plugs were well beyond their life.
The real question is "should you buy a high mileage b9 audi with 3.0 turbo change motor?". My honest opinion: Yes (because I have to sell this shit to someone). P.S. Just kidding. Audi is one love! Hope someday I'll have higher quality roads and will be able to drive low sport cars like s4. Currently I'm driving q5.
I miss my S4 at times, it was a great car and would love to own another, once they're bulletproof like the B8.5 Lol!
Awesome video , this was such a good move getting this and ditching the Audi
Would it last to 150k?
Ahhh, Help, have an Opportunity to buy a 2018 Prestige S4 2-owner car WITH 148K!!! miles for $20k. Clear title FL. Car, should I do it?
I got rid of my 2018 S4 shortly after this video believe it or not. 83k Miles and it developed a ticking knocking under load that could not be pinpointed. After I got rid of mine, MANY 2018s and 2019s in the community had catastrophic failure. It's a tossup, because by 148k miles, it should've blown, and if it hasn't that may be a good sign. It also could mean impending doom. My key takeaway from my ownership and experience with other members, don't buy an 18 or a 19.
Love the video so you have had a b8.5 and a b9 what do you think is the best to have i love both but i do live in cad so not to sure with the rust and everything else
Hi , I have an intake on my 120i too , how do you get it to flutter when you rev , mine will only spool if I put it in drive and rev while braking
I've had mine installed since the video, and mine does not flutter when driving. The flutter when driving would come from an atmospheric blow-off valve if you'd like to install one. I believe it only flutters in park sadly.
You really shouldn’t be doing that. Your brakes and transmission components don’t like it. That is if you care about mechanical sympathy. To each their own.
That is a good price considering the market.
Dude the spark plug tip fell off into my engine and scored the cylinder walls on my B9-S4!!! Didn’t know that was a common problem!? Love the content from Kentucky!
Unfortunately, after owning the S4 for a bit, I learned the B9s with the 3.0T had a multitude of issues, from the oil cap popping off, spark plug tips breaking off, rocker arms and more.. Thanks for the kind words!
@@BrandonFinleyxDoes this also mean the B9,5 have the same issues?Or they are resolved on them?
@@abrakadabraangelov1829 Late production 2019+ 3.0T and 2.9TT should not have these issues whatsoever. I forget the exact date split, but you can find that on the forums.
cool!
Love your content, all the way from South Africa
Thank you! I appreciate the comment, it means a lot
2:20 you don’t mention the year of the car or what kind of car it is (228,M240?) B9 S4 is so much better though.
Sorry! It’s a 230i XDrive! And the S4 was a more powerful car, and more luxurious, but this vehicle in my own opinion drives a lot better, feels better etc. But to each their own!
@@BrandonFinleyx i guess you weren’t really comparing them to be fair lol but still a sick car and love the color congrats
@@stefanomarcellino6701Thank you for that! Thanks for watching!
Would love a B9 S4 Avant but the rocker arm issue really puts me off. The more you research it you’re left feeling it’s an inevitability at some point. Sadly.
I sold mine a few weeks ago, I'll be making a follow-up video soon, motor was definitely knocking.
I just turned 100k on my '18 S5 and it's been absolutely bulletproof, but then I stay on top of maintenance and change the oil every 5k with Liquimoly. I've driven it from the West Coast to Denver and back 5 times, including the southern route and a blizzard in Santa Fe, and it's been great. Also have a B8.5 with just over 100k and it's been bulletproof as well, again because of maintenance. Also, if you have a B9, do yourself a favor and pick up a transmission pan and some ZF8. Audi says lifetime fill, ZF told me around 65k to 70k and I followed their advice. It's a bit of a pain, you need to pull the transmission mount frame and support the rear at the driveshaft flange, but the peace of mind is worth the effort...and you can pop in an 034 insert at the same time. The only issue I've had on the B9 is the rockers, had them replaced at about 60k because one had failed. Turns out there's a center pin hardening issue, at least on mine, in some of the production run. Don't know who makes the rockers, but I have 40k on the new set and they seem fine. I also don't know if I have the rockers with the big rollers or the original small needles, again if I have to replace them it'll be a good opportunity to refresh everything else. The only thing I dislike about the car is the cupholders....whoever decided that was a good place for them should have to clean every MMI that has a spill on it.
Was it covered under warranty? How much did it run you? What symptoms did the car exhibit?
@@ProgTrance Yep, warranty covered it, and the car started sounding like it had a collapsed lifter or wildly out of adjustment valves for those of us who know what sounds like in an air cooled VW to Porsche. The noise was constant and got louder with throttle, or on overrun. Seems to just have been the early production cars, and I was lucky to have only one fail. I took it apart and found the center pin had been worn down incredibly, so some poorly hardened pieces got through QC. Important to mention is that I bought the extended warranty when I bought the car and the failure happened later to me than others, at 65,000 miles. I attribute the delayed problem to using Liqui Moly 5w30, changing it every 5k and changing it immediately after dealer service, and my service guy thinks that's why it didn't fail sooner, too. Seems not many are happy with the 0w20.
@@Steve_with_coffee I was snooping on free Carfax reports on 2018 SQ5s as I also have one. Of the 30 or so Carfax reports I looked at, one that was sold in mid 2017, had 10k oil changes, had its long block replaced at 99k miles. I can only assume it was due to rockers as it was an early built car. Mine is mid 2018 date, with 95k miles, I also have an extended warranty for 2.5 more years left on it, so I’m not super worried, but it’s always in the back of my mind as a slight worry, otherwise I absolutely love the B9 SQ5!
I have a nissan that had occasional axle clicking. Tried greasing the hub/cv SPLINES, but what fixed it was medium strength blue loctite
