Ukulele Sawmill Tuning
Переглядів 2532 роки тому
I had some time, and I was having camera issues (as you will see). This is "Sawmill tuning" also called "Cross tuning" EAEA. It originated from Scotch-Irish folk music towards the fiddle (Violin) as well as the 4 and 5 string banjo. This info has not been posted before and I researched the history of this tuning a lot.

    According to their Amazon listing, these Aquila 96C strings are for A to A tuning. Isn't it too much stress to tune it to E to E? Please respond.

    • @MrTom-Songwriter-Composer
      @MrTom-Songwriter-Composer 2 місяці тому

      Guitarlele are normally tuned in Standard A tuning. This is the standard but not the set rule. When your tuning to Standard E tuning you are tuning "lower" than Standard A tuning NOT higher up. If you are concerned about the steps in my video. I recommend the Aquila Strings 153C string set.

    I was at the guitar store a couple of weeks ago and I passed by this guitar that was hanging on the wall. It had a nice top, the wood grain was really close together and white. I knew it was a Yamaha. I looked inside the sound hole and was surprised that it was an FS800. I thought it would be a higher end model. So, I just went by it to look at the rest of the guitars and played a couple other guitars. 4 days later I went to the same store to buy guitar picks and I walked by it again and took a look at it again and passed, thinking that I already had a Yamaha AR3M, an all solid guitar that cost about $900.00. So, I went on to play a Martin D-10E. While I was playing the Martin for about 3 songs I looked at the Yamaha FS-800 hanging in the wall and I heard it call my mame. So I picked it up and played a couple of songs and I went wow!… With all due respects to Martin, I said to myself, this little thing projects and sounds better than the D 10 that I was playing. I have had many Yamaha guitars before. But it was the tone that didn’t really like and sold them all back to guitar center. It turns out that I had an LL16, LS16 and others. This one sounded different and it had a tone I was looking for. So i said, I already have way too many guitars going up to almost $3000. End of story that Yamaha didn’t let me put it down and sold my AR3 back to Guitar Center and this one is a big time keeper. I call it “mi diablita” my little devil. What an amazing, easy to play, awesome sounding and projecting 000 size guitar. I owned a Martin OM solid, made in Nazareth and this one I like better!…

      Hello, Thank You for your comment. The audio in my videos are very limited at times..And I need to try to remake this one. But YES it would be a great choice as the size is nice, and the body size is great for all around playing. If I could have only one acoustic guitar that I currently own, it would be this one. Try to buy on Amazon in case there is any major defects you can return it easily.. Any mass produced product that can happen. Look out for excessive buzzing from really high frets, warped necks.. ECT. Or, if the price is around the $220.00 USD try to buy it locally. Music stores usually overcharge for a basic setup that is "sometimes" needed after buying an acoustic guitar. Setting a truss rod in the neck and lowering the string saddle is a basic setup. $50.00 USD is a good price anything $100.00 or higher is not. There are great videos on UA-cam how to do either / or. Have a great day / night. - Mr.Tom

    Excellent video sir! I don't think mahogany was available when I got my RA90, but I was aiming for "natural" anyway, so I guess it worked out. You have that Rogue sounding like an absolute GEM! I am really enjoying mine, especially the tone. Methinks I do need to replace the nut as you did. Some people get their noses in the air about the brand on the headstock when honestly the only people who can tell much of, if any, difference in the actual tone are pros themselves. The VAST majority of the time, people in bars or cafes are not gonna know the difference in tone (or brand for that matter) between a Rogue or a Martin. In the adjustable studio environment, the differences in tone probably get even hazier. Your logic about using guitars at this price point for gigs is spot on. Roy Clark, Chet Atkins, or Jerry Reed would have melted faces with a RA90 (as long as the Rogue didn't spontaneously combust or explode from them playing it!). I am a complete guitar novice, but I think videos like yours are important in order to not have beginners think they are obligated to spend serious coin on their first instrument when so many budget guitars are punching above their weight nowadays.

      Thanks for your comment. I ramble a lot as I'm an old guy.. so stay with me for a bit. As you heard in my video, I'm actually a songwriter/composer and a self-administered publisher and I write and record music all time and for a very long time. Instrumentals mainly, but this year I've started playing out in some small venues and singing again and I'm releasing a single this year. I also play 14 instruments acoustic and electric. I've told people for years that you don't need to spend $1000+ on a good instrument like an acoustic guitar. If someone had plenty of money and / or someone is looking for an acoustic guitar as a "heirloom" instrument YES ABSOLUTELY... Buy a Martin Guitar and buy 5 or 10 of them... go for it.... But I can tell you, that used instruments like this RA90 acoustic guitar are great value not just for playing out live, but ALSO for songwriting / recording. Because I know how to setup, upgrade and do minor repairs of all my stringed instruments all of the them that I own do just fine and I've actually gotten direct payouts and also long term streaming mechanical royalties by using those SAME inexpensive instruments in my recording. In the end, "TO ME" it make sense, as I keep more money in my wallet while getting different acoustic guitar body shapes / sizes (that DO sound different) as well as electric guitars that have different pickups and pickup configurations. I'm actually making a HUGE list for some new instruments and gear that I am buying for performing out live as well using on my new single. One more thing to add, if you have time view my "Ukulele Basic Setup and Maintenance" as everything I saying on it also applies to acoustic guitar: ua-cam.com/video/RKlfIZjUF3M/v-deo.html

      Hey, Thanks for your comment. To let you know, this one that I got here is still doing great. And with the same setup using the Fishman sound hole pickup. I am playing out on small venues with it... Even tonight. Look on Musician's Friend AND on Amazon. You may find them on Ebay BUT DO NOT buy there as some times those a slight damage, or scratch and dent.. Or bad neck or frets. Also, make sure when you get the guitar to check it all out.. If there any frets that seems very high.. Return it.. Any sort of work will cost you the same amount of money if you take it to any repair places. Also do not forget to make or buy a sound hole humidifier held in-between the strings and it dangles thru the body of the guitar to hydrate it. It will be dry and it will need moisture. ALSO last thing, always TRY to buy "10 gauge" acoustic guitar strings, less tension on the neck and bridge. I like to buy D'Addario EJ10 80.20 bronze those are great. Thanks again for your comment - MrTom / Mister Tom

      Hi.. Thanks for your comment. I hope you are having a great new year so far. Time mark 3:18 in the video, I say that I have a regular ukulele string set on that baritone ukulele. So you can use your Tenor / Concert or Soprano ukulele that has a regular string set and on it or "low g" . You can use the same tuning: E-A-E-A, it will sound better with a normal string set, but you can use it on the low g as well. If you were using a baritone ukulele that had a standard baritone ukulele tuning of D-G-B-E, you could would tune it to: C-F-C-F

Good luck to you, the harmonica is one of the best instruments to learn and play: www.amazon.com/Ammo-Clip-520-CherryBomb-Microphones/dp/B086NPHCY8/ref=sr_1_2?crid=3LR4OGZ8JD9TO&keywords=superlux+harmonica+microphone+stand&qid=1658162239&s=musical-instruments&sprefix=superlux+harmonica+microphnoe+stand%2Cmi%2C63&sr=1-2

    Can’t get the pickup to generate a sound. That is, the LED on the tuner doesn’t activate. Also, what is the smaller battery for?

      Thank You for your comment and time posting this question to me. If this is a KMISE Ukulele bass like in my video, please understand that I do not work or have any contracts with KMISE. However, do know that I still try to help out everyone when I can. To me.. It sounds like a power issue. Either the pre-amp electronics are defective or the batteries are dead. The batteries provide power to the pre-amp and piezo element pickup that is under the string saddle. The pre-amp uses two 3 volt lithium batteries the models are: CR2032. That would be the easiest thing to try first. 2nd would be to see if Amazon or whoever you bought the ukulele bass from, you could return it.. Amazon has a great return policy that is why I reference to buy from them in many of my videos. If you are past the return date and if you have no problems with fixing things, one thing to know... That the pre-amp part and socket that is used in this Kmise ukulele bass SHOULD be the same as this one below. You will find a lot of Chinese manufactuers buy there electronic parts from the same factories then put their own brand names on the part. This one, to me looks like the same one, for around $13.99 USD: www.amazon.com/Btuty-Ukulele-Ukelele-Equalizer-Display/dp/B09BNNH685/ref=sr_1_10?crid=2TX86SYF3S49T&keywords=ukulele+pre-amp&qid=1658164082&s=musical-instruments&sprefix=ukulele+pre-amp%2Cmi%2C82&sr=1-10

    Great review! Lots of good care tips! Had not heard of using hydration with laminate ukes. Like your DIY humidifier!!! I can do that! What kind, brand, etc of sponge is best?

      I'm going to reply to your other post in my other video in a bit. First my reply on your comment. YES! makes no difference, laminated tops or solid. Some people out there have challenged me in regards that a internal humidifier is needed, but again trust me IT IS regardless of the humidity of your house. I've seen a lot of guitars, ukulele, and other string instruments have cracked tops, sides and backs over the year. Any kind of sponge you can use. If you use an anti-micro ones (anti mold), just make sure you squeeze it out a few times first.. you'll see it is a bit on the soapy side when you do. Also, important again to check the sponge for any mold spots when you use are using it. Some people just cut the mold spots out when they see them.. I just replace the sponge out right. Also, you don't need to jam the whole sponge into the internal pill bottle there, but both your index and middle fingers together.. the total width of your fingers that would be good reference point to start. - MrTom

      Thank You for your comment. The one that I have in the video is decent and another thing I did not say is I actually really like to tune the ukulele down lower in standard and alternative turnings. The looks of the ukulele is really different and I am hoping they come out with a baritone and guitarlele with a truss rod in the neck. Have a great week, and please know that I really appreciate you taking the time to comment on my video.

      Thank You for your comment. Like I said in the video, I do not get any money from any companies or UA-cam or any sort of donation web site. When I recommend a instrument like this, if the one I have is really good for price.. I'll always will give people my honest opinion on it. Have a great week and Thank You again for comment and time.
