Interesting you chose Chuckie as the subject. I worked on that aircraft a couple of times in the past as an avionics tech. Interesting backstory to it. Doctor Hospers bought the aircraft, restored it to flying and airshow condition and named it after his wife...Chuckie. It didn't fly for years, not because it was not airworthy but because of a legal dispute between Dr Hospers and the airport the aircraft was based at, he couldn't use the airport. (long story) After his death Mrs. Hospers continued it's legacy at the same airport, and was the showpiece of the warbird museum that they established there. After her death the museum sold the aircraft, and it's been subsequently repainted and renamed.

Excellent video. I bought this Grex over a year ago and maybe used it once. I've been hesitant to use it more due to the more involved breakdown for cleaning. My main airbrush is a Paasche Talon and have become intimately familiar with cleaning. I'm a bit of a novice and am still learning airbrush best practices.

Great video, and I just noticed at the beginning you have a still of the B-17 "Chuckie". I personally got to work on that aircraft a few times. Unfortunately it crashed and burned and was totally destroyed a few years back. Great video.

Even if the real thing is white, pure white on a scale model doesn't look real, it should always be "off-white." Same with black.

I have the Silhouette cutter and have used it a few times to create masks and stencils. Large, simple shapes come out nicely but small and complex shapes are hit or miss. I have found that using velum works well for some projects better than adhesive based materials. For accuracy in designing, I prefer to use Adobe Illustrator and import the files to Studio Design, the Silhouette software. The weakness of the cutter is its blade which does not always rotate smoothly. I wonder if there are more precise cutters that use a different and more delicate cutting tool without burning or otherwise damaging the masking materials.

Laser cuts would be the upgrade to vinyl cutters but they are pricey.

I've been building wooden model ships/boats--easy to find filler for wood. I like your idea for plastic model gaps--thank you! We use a homemade tool like this with a needle & dowel, wrapping the sharp needle end to the dowel, so the eye will hold more CA Glue. I use gaff tape to hold the needle tightly. When it gets "globby", just put it through the flame of a match or candle, and the glob on the needle will burn off; wipe the black soot and good to go again.

Trying to figure out which paper is best suited for this. Turned out that the "ultra thin" sheets I bought were at least twice as thick as the ones that come with the kits, which really doesn't work on models. Even trying to blend the edges, there's still a noticeable edge that catches washes.

Another great video. 2 Questions. Would painting putty have worked also or is that for soft edge camo? Also, you mentioned a clear coat helping to keep the paint from peeling up when you peeled the tap up. Did I hear that correctly? If so please tell me more .

    • @StyreneModelersHaven
      @StyreneModelersHaven 2 місяці тому

Correct about putty masking. It leaves a soft edge. Even if you flatten it, it will still not be as crisp as tape. I find that a coat of clear over thin fragile paints helps protect the paint from de masking. A good primer is needed under the paint first.

    • @aaronnichols9338

@@StyreneModelersHaven kinda cool when you are doing one project and the light bulb turns on right??? But the only problem I had back then was the adhesive was not as good as it is today, And every once in awhile it would take some of the paint when I peeled it off.... But the 3M pin striping tape I use today has zero issues....but your vids are a great help to modelers of all ages, and me building kits at 71 years, I still get good ideas watching them....take care and Thanks for the reply.

Great video, solid techniques. The "ghosting" you mention is tape adhesive. I avoid using even Tamiya tape on metal. I cut "Post It Notes" to fit. This adhesive is much weaker and requires working on only one or two areas at a time as the masks may lift if not watched carefully. Post Its won't leave that residue.

Phenominal job on the Saiun! One or two points. The C6N was a Nakajima design and manuactured by Nakajima. Nakajima used their own version of IJN Dark Green paint, which differed from the Mitsubishi Dark Green, Nakajima being more of a very Dark Olive hue, rather than the slightly blue hue in the Dark Green Mitsubishi paint. The Saiun did see active service, notably in the Battle of the Inland Sea in march 1945. They spotted the Incoming US formation and 2 were shot down, the other 6 escaping...

Actually, the bare metal finish on aircraft because more commonplace near the end of WWII til the Vietnam Era. This was because aircraft-like the P-38 Lightning and the P-51 Mustang followed by the early jets became so fast that the paint kept peeling off the aircraft! It became a cost issue to keep repainting aircraft. The faster the planes became, the worse the problem got. Then, they developed epoxy-based paints that stayed on. The Airforce initially didn’t mind so much because they figured speed and, in the cases of the B-29, B-36, etc., altitude would keep their aircraft safe but Navy welcomed this solution because seawater and salt are corrosive to metals.

Interesting. For years i been filling gaps with stretched spruce plastic. Streach to thickness of gap, add some Tamiya thin glue give it a second and shape with a toothpick. Minimal sanding required. Hope it helps too! 👍

@@StyreneModelersHaven *sprue . I just noticed. What can I say, I'm a product of Reaganomics 🤦🤣. This method works great. We get so much extra plastic, why waste it 😉.

Incredibly good idea, but small correction they haven't really made latex paint in about 20 years now as its all polyurethane or oil now. Don't use oil for this as acrylics cant bond to it. Also fun fact(can supply proof if needed to some extent), house paints are chemically identical to most hobby paints so you can thin them down with water and get a very similar result.

This technique might also be applicable to flying models, where performance can be affected by the smoothness of airflow around eg ducted fans etc. Food for thought.

Hi, The problem with perfect plastic putty is that it dries in the tube pretty quickly and in my experience it works only in very thin gap (it shrinks a lot), I get the same result with cheap craft acrylic paint from Michaels. My filler of choice is Upol polyester glaze (for auto body), it's like a bondo but more liquid and easy to sand, it's cheap and it comes in an airtight "ketchup" type of bottle, with hardener, easy to use. I roughly mask around with house thick masking tape, it avoids unnecessary mess, specially in the panel lines and the thickness of the tape creates a thicker layer of filler to allow for light shrinking.
