      I mean, I live a simple life, and I don't have children, so I'm not the best audience to navigate the discourse on their relationship. But I think spending 70 years with a man to find out that he orchestrated the murder of your daughter and manipulated your memory isn't ideal. Could be worse? Sure, I suppose.

    Would LOVE to know your thoughts on Armand's backstory? Mainly because I felt like I didn't get much of your reaction to it in this video and I don't know if its because you didn't have much reaction to it or if its because you didn't quite understand it on first watch (which was very common for first time watches, a lot of people got confused because of his name and pronoun shifting and weren't sure if he was talking about himself the whole time). I ask because Armand is definitely terrible, but without a doubt just as fascinating a character as Louis, Lestat and Claudia imo. And the damage that being a victim of child sex trafficking and a prostitute for so long, on top of the hundreds of years of god knows what else, has done to his psyche and his relationship with control and other people in general, explain so much about the things we've seen him do. Not that it absolves him of course, in the same way that Lestat's childhood abuse and myriad of other experiences don't absolve him of being an abusive partner and guardian to Louis and Claudia. And how Louis' trauma and repression explain, but don't excuse some of his actions (chiefly the ones directly hurting Claudia). This show is a gothic romance, but at its core its a tale examining the cycles of abuse imo and that's super interesting to me! Also wanted to add this at the end, but what are your thoughts on Louis and Armand's dom/sub dynamic which was initiated in this episode? Again I ask because this is a semi-divisive topic within the fandom. People have drawn attention to the fact that its a problematic considering Louis past as a pimp and Armand's past as a sex worker, but I often feel like people use it as a way to demonize and fault Louis in ways that, considering Armand's lies and manipulation and abuse in retrospect, don't feel appropriate or strictly applicable imo. The way I've always read that bench scene and Loumand's relationship as a whole is always: illusion. Armand offering Louis the illusion of control in this dynamic while he's the one pulling strings and ultimately meting out punishment. And Louis having the illusion that he's in control of a situation that he's using to, before her death, keep Claudia and himself safe and then after her death, the illusion that he's punishing Lestat and Armand, when the reality is he's punishing himself as well and playing into Armand's own instability and desire for attention and love no matter how it comes. All this to say I know y'all are still reeling and processing the whole show, but DAMN I love all these characters! They're all awful and Claudia deserved better, but they are riveting...like little toxic molecules I'm examining in a microscope. Can't wait for your reaction to episode 5 in particular! Whole show is immaculate, but THAT is a standout episode for sure.

    The thing that pissed me off about Claudia and Louis' fight is that in the most TECHNICAL of timeline he *did* choose Armand first. Armand found out the night before Claudia joined the coven and when he meant to tell her she first mentioned her history of SA with Bruce. It's understandable that he would want her to have something that finally made her happy but by NOT telling her she couldn't make a truly informed decision about still joining the coven. In that instance he DID choose Armand first and continued to.

    • @birdcallsreaction
      @birdcallsreaction День тому

      I hate when they fight 😩 I'm biased because I'm a Claudia apologist, and she can do no wrong in my eyes, but I really don't even think the timeline mattered. The wounds from Louis refusing to burn Lestat (which now we know wouldn't have worked anyway) were deep. I think anything would have felt like a betrayal, even if he thought he was doing it to keep her safe and happy. I would LOVE to know how she would have reacted if he had told her the same night he found out. I'm with you, I wish that she'd gotten what he should have given her at the beginning of all of this - a choice.

    Louis and Claudia are the protagonists but that doesn't mean they are innocent. Claudia planned the murder of her creator and Louis participated. They are criminals in the vampire world. Armand is quite soft with Claudia considering that he read her mind and knows perfectly well what she did to Lestat, also let's remember that Lestat is not only the founder of the vampire theater, he was also Armand's lover.

    • @birdcallsreaction

      Now that I've finished the series, I just don't think I can have an apples to apples conversation about Armands treatment of Claudia being "quite soft".

    Technically, louie, claudia and lestat were their own coven, so why is killing lestat a crime no different than Armand punishing his coven members with death. Armand is only leader of his coven and it happend in another country.

    • @marianavase8805
      @marianavase8805 День тому

      Armand sentences to death the members of the coven who have broken the vampire rules. He does not do it because of personal grudges. Besides, killing your own creator/father is a terrible crime.

    • @birdcallsreaction
      @birdcallsreaction День тому

      I think that we could all talk ourselves into circles on the Great Laws and if we think they were or weren't broken and who gets to decide who/when it's gone far enough for people to be put to death. In my mind, if Armand had been consistent, he would have sentenced them the first night since he knew the entire time. Then, he would have killed Lestat because he created Claudia (obviously, Lestat is much more challenging to kill, but STILL), but that didn't happen. So, there's an obvious grey area. Headcanon for me now is that if they'd had a legitimate trial, Claudia and Louis would have won 😂

    During the German invasion, and subsequent occupation of France, and specifically, Paris, many French citizens were starving and dying from illness and poverty. Desperate citizens often accepted food from the Germans in order to survive. It was a common occurrence for these individuals to be tormented, their businesses marred with graffiti (swastikas). Many people, especially women , were dragged through the streets, stripped and beaten and called Nazi sympathizers. While many of these accused were just trying to survive, there were other who blatantly or secretly were supporting the Germans. French designer Coco Chanel had a lengthy, love affair with a high-ranking Nazi official. She was fortunate enough to avoid the same backlash and temporarily escaped to Switzerland until the threat died down. People like Madeleine were not so fortunate and had no connections to prevent the harsh treatment received.

    The photo of the boy on crutches is an original by famed photographer and filmmaker, Gordon Parks. The image of Armand was taken the night Louis was taking a walk with him when the image of Lestat appeared. Louis took the photo while Lestat was in the frame, but when he developed the film, Lestat was not in the photo. You will notice Armand is on the far right of the frame because Louis was trying to capture Lestat in the photo. This is why the composition of the photo looks "weird" with the large space where Lestat was standing. The photo in Louis' portfolio is by another famous photographer, Fred Stein.

    Armand's strength and fragility is a crazy balancing act to play. I love how Assad managed it. He's viciously reactionary, with so much under the surface, just boiling. This episode has the line in it that is, imo, the key to his entire character. "No one has painted me in over 400 years." As he's speaking about not knowing what he is supposed to be. He has been defined by others and the expectations of others his entire existence. Louis' freedom and self-actualization (skewed as it may be by Lestat's effect on him) is intoxicating to him.

    • @birdcallsreaction

      It's funny because they put forward the cast for consideration for the Critics Choice awards this week, and it really only seems right that ALL of them get nominated. Assad is amazing, and while I can't stand Armand and Louis together, Armand, as a character, is a gem.

    Thank you for the reactions! Your commentary is so interesting and relatable. And yes, I also think that Louis' hallucination of Lestat is meant to take us back to the beginning of their relationship.
