How To Clean & ReHair Your Fairy Tail Bird Vintage Toy
You can do it! Here's how to fix, clean, and ReHair your vintage Fairy Tails Bird toy, starring Tattle Tails the bird. These 1980s toys are often found in poor condition, with frizzed hair, dirt & more. If the hair is in such bad shape that you need to replace it, you can use this video.
It is surprisingly easy to do, and the result looks really original and nice, when you do it right. The Fairy Tails had long, lovely hair to represent their tail feathers. However, it was so long it could easily tangle & kids would pull on it very hard which would frizz up the hair. Then, they'd cut the hair and make it worse. 2nd-hand toys like this often have very poorly hair that you might want to replace. They are a Hasbro product, so they share the hair colors of My Little Pony G1 ponies.
Yes this is a kids' toy, but the tutorial involves sharp scissors and poking the toy with pliers so it's not recommended for kids to do the restoration. You can also learn random Fairy Tail Bird facts during part of the video. How will Tattle Tails turn out? See what to do in under 12 minutes. This video has no sound.

Really good idea of what I can get on the
How do you dry the hair after washing again at the end?
My daughter and I have purchased your products!! We love them and thank you!!
I want to try and customise a few, so this tutorial is great for knowing what to do. Thanks.
My rarity’s hair is just one big mat I got her preowned I’m gonna try this on her because it’s just unreal.
Lovely, very helpful and happy new year to all!!!
Thanks! This will be very helpful for me!!!
She turned out gorgeous! I was afraid the tinsel can't be helped.
Amazing tutorial! You are so talented!
How long is the tinsel?!
The tinsel should be a little bit longer than the hair you are adding/replacing. So, in the case for Princess Sparkle here who has her original tinsel they probably had it at about 16 cm or so, since I think 'princess length' for manes is about 15 cm. For the tail, of course, it is folded over in half to make the tail bundle along with the hair.
Nice vid, keep it up! You deserve more views, I think you should use Promosm to increase your social proof!
Thank you.
This tutorial is fantastic! I finally understand it now. Thank you for sharing! :)
Mimic pose
I hope this channel continues some day in future...
The tinsel doesn't come out through normal brushing right? Unless you really pull it with intention to get it out?
If you have an ordinary, fairly undamaged G1 (like this one) the tinsel won't come out with normal brushing or combing. Frizz & crinkling weaken it, as do chemicals but whatever Hasbro used in the 1980s was fairly sturdy. Sturdier by far than lots of tinsel used in toys today.
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 What if it's a G3 with tinsel? Is that less sturdy and needs a gentler hand when brushing?
@@Songal18 G3 is a little bit less sturdy, but really, not by much. They favor a lot of that iridescent/clear type tinsel which can be straightened, but still doesn't look as good as new when it is. Generally, the biggest risk of tinsel isn't pulling it out, but rather having it all crinkled and frizzed up or broken off short/to look bad. Tinsel can also be replaced by hand. I should make a video about that.
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 Okay, thank you so much.
Pony hairplugs
working on my rainbow dash plush right now :D thanks for sharing
Very nice but please make future ones with sound, its much more satisfying
Thank you 😊
DO NOT LET KIDS PLAY WITH THESE_ I am so upset with my daughter for ruining all the ponies hair includung myponies ! I had ponies s a kid and never destroyed them like she does. she even broke all theri wings- she owes me a lot of ponies when she gets a job!
dont blame your daughter for the plushes having low durability, blame the companies for not making them higher quality
I tried this on my ty princess luna and it changed her hair colour a bit
If the iron was really hot, it might happen. One color of old 80s mlp hair (Wisteria, a light purple on ones like Bluebelle & others) was known to go a little pinkish if a really hot iron was used. A lower heat & testing a small strip can help. Companies are always inventing new hair colors & hair materials, so testing is a good idea. But, even if it does change a little bit--sometimes being free from frizz & looking good is worth the risk of small color shift.
Why did you wrapped the pony in metal paper? I have a pony which colour change from yellow to a king of orange and I don't know wht to do. Any advice, please?
It says in the video, to make sure it doesn't get yellow
My rainbow dash hair is so fizzy I will use this method but what can u use instead of laundry detergent
You can also use hair conditioner. It doesn't even have to be a good brand. You should still wear the glove if you use conditioner, though. Also, use a well-ventilated area because when you heat up conditioner it could smell more.
What if we don’t have laundry detergent then what can we use
I have a question please? If you plan to do a full dye job, how do you keep the eyes from becoming stained?
The eye paint doesn't take dye well, so if you're doing pastels or pale dye you don't need to do much. However, if you're worried, you can use matte mod podge to mask them off. (Just fill in entire eye-area with thick matte modpodge) Once it dries, you can dye safely. After dyeing, you can melt the mod podge away by putting soaked tissue over it & leaving it wet that way for hours. When it's ready to come off, the modpodge should look white/wrinkly. If it all doesn't peel up when you pull it, use another tissue and soak it more. It's important to weaken it with soaking so it won't damage the eye paint/even though it takes long for soaking it off. (I ought to do a video about this...thank you for asking!)
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 Thank you for your answer. :) I plan on doing a deep red. The mane is in, so hopefully I won't screw up the tinsel.
@@bezoticallyyours83 Red is the most volatile color of dye. It's the most likely to stain and the most likely to bleed, so covering the eye is probably a good idea with this color, above all others. After doing the dye, even if you vinegar/ice bath probably don't let other ponies touch that one for a long time/like can't leave any pressed next to that one.
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 Gotcha! Thanks.
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 I've finally gotten the courage to dip dye her today. I watched your video again before I did. Thank you so so much for your tutorial.
I am rehairing the same pony. What is the name of the colour you used for her? :)
Glad to hear you're fixing up a Dangles too! Her color is DollyHair's Water Nixie
@@ahorseofeverycolor8932 ok, someone else told me her colour is atomic turquoise. But you think this one is more near her original?
This would be a lot easier to follow with audio, but good tutorial
Will it fall out if you brush and braid the hair?
If you use the right type of glue in the head, and a good brand of zip tie, the hair will be just as strong as original hair. You can wet, wash & re-style it as well. The types of glue suggested are 'toothpaste ' consistency & not water based so they'll never melt.
THANK YOU FOR THIS!!! I had no way of fixing my Rarity plush in that size that I got with suuuper tangled and frizzy hair. I can now bring her back to her fashionable glory!
Turned out great!
Rehairing a mane looks tough.
Heh. I guess I do re-tailing backwards by pulling the hair through first and then adding the ziptie. Works though.
Oh she looks wonderful! 💞 I can't wait to grab one and do this. Thanks.
Thanks for posting this video sooooo helpful
Where can I get hair for them ? I have one without a tail!
Where did you buy the hair? I'm looking for small bundles of synthetic hair, but they're all coming in full wigs
The hair I got was from dollyhair (website) in the usa. There are also European hair retailers. The hair to look for is 'nylon doll hair'. If you end up with wig hair, the strands are much too coarse. Hair specifically for dolls works best. DH has color-match to old g1 ponies, which was why I selected it for Dangles.
I read on Dream Valley that the white Windy is an international variation? 🦄
this was such an informative and helpful video! thanks for this!
Would I still be able to use this method on the Ty Sparkle plushies? They have little shiny accent thingies in their hair that I don't know if they might burn from the iron or not. I guess if they would, I mean, it's not like they are exactly super necessary to make their hair look prettier, but... Just wanna know if that would be a concern with these types.
Very helpful. I can use this to fix my G3 figures
Instead of laundry detergent can you use fabric softene?
I got a preowned bab Fluttershy and she is so frizzy. I'll try this method to fix her.
Where do you find those ponies at?" too cool ;3
Type in HQG1C Ponies. :)
These are HQG1C custom blanks, and they're in Etsy & Ecrater A Horse of Every Color shop now, if you want to try for yourself the fun of customizing.
Господи что это за пони!?
These videos are fun to watch you should make more!
Your pony is stunning. Great job ! It looks really easy to do and you've made the instructions really clear. ^^ Thanks ! Have a great day !
Can you use a hot glue gun or Fabric-tac?
If Fabrictack glue is a toothpaste type consistency, you can use it. (I'm not familiar with it) but 'pourable glues' like modpodge and especially crazyglue should never be used. Hot glue might work (very thick) but there would not be a good way to get the glue tip all the way inside the head (where the bangs go) to apply it and not miss hairs. It's ability to harden right away would also impede fixing missed hairs later.
It worked on my build a bear twilight sparkle!
Will this work on mlp build a bears?
Dude that is a build a bear!
