In 2020 at age 49 I decided to get into dirt biking. Friends of mine had done it for years, and I was looking for something to get me out of the house and into more of the great outdoors. I have been a scout, backpacker, fisherman, camper, snowboarder and skier all of my life but wanted to try something different. So . . . I purchased a brand new 2019 Husqvarna FE 250 and started on this journey. I've loved every second of it. In 2022 I purchased a KTM 890 Adventure bike to even further increase my access to the world of dirt riding. In 2023 I added to the 2-wheeled collection by purchasing a Fezzari Timp Peak eMTB to give me easy access to even more areas. It's a joy to be able to experience the beauties of nature in Utah and the surrounding area, and it's been a blast making videos of the journey.
Corner Canyon - Rush Crash & Burn
Well, I finally had my first crash. You know if you ride on two wheels you are eventually going to crash. I'm about 1. 5 months into having a mountain bike, so it was about time. This short video is of me riding the trail called "Rush" in the Corner Canyon area of Draper, Utah. This is a super fun flow trail with a lots of jumps and berms. As you can see, I'm no expert, but man am I having fun on my new Fezzari Timp Peak.

A group of us ride Woods Hollow uphill and Vertigo downhill on a beautiful summer evening. We're all pretty new to mountain biking and loved the flow and simple jumpline on this trail. If you're expecting world class jumpline acrobatics in this video, then you've picked the wrong group of noobs to follow. :) If you want to just check out what the Vertigo trail in Corner Canyon is like, you've c...

This video shows the downhill portion of a loop I ride at Corner Canyon in Draper, Utah. I take Wood's Hollow up and then ride Vertigo down. Vertigo is a downhill-only trail and has a blue (more difficult) rating. As someone new to mountain biking, I found Vertigo to be pretty easy. There was a lot of washboard on the trail, so look out for that. The trail is approximately 2 miles long.
Corner Canyon - Wood's Hollow Uphill to Rattle and Hum Downhill MTB

This video shows the loop that can be ridden starting from the Corner Canyon South Maple Hollow trailhead up Wood's Hollow and then down Rattle and Hum. It is a fantastic trail for beginners on mountain bikes as well as those who just want some nice, flowy trail riding. There are no technical sections either up Wood's Hollow or down Rattle and Hum. The entire loop is almost exactly 3 miles long.
Mountain Biking in Red Canyon Near Bryce Canyon, Utah
Переглядів 219Рік тому
I've gone and purchased a mountain bike as if having dirt bikes and adventure bikes isn't enough. I had a chance to take my new Fezzari Timp Peak riding in the Red Canyon area near Bryce Canyon. Having less than a month of mountain bike riding under my belt, I figured I'd put my novice skills to the test in some pretty aggressive terrain. The experience was awesome and the views breathtaking. T...
Springville Canyon Trail Fails
Переглядів 189Рік тому
I went riding with my buddy up Springville canyon in Utah this past week. I realized one thing very quickly . . . I'm aerobically out of shape, and it makes a big difference when riding. When you are wrestling a 250 pound bike with full gear on, in the heat, on uneven ground and at high altitude, it can quickly drain your energy. Regardless of my multiple drops, we had a great time on some real...
KTM 890 Adventure Biking - San Rafael Swell, Utah

We took a day trip down to the San Rafael Swell in central Utah to ride the Black Dragon Canyon on our KTM 890 Adventure bikes. What amazing views! I recently purchased an "Insta360 ONE RS" 360 degree camera to play around with while adventure riding. This trip was my first go-around with the camera. As you can see from the video, the Insta360 Motorcycle Mount Bundle accessories aren't strong e...
KTM 890 Adventure S and KTM 390 Adventure in Gold Butte National Monument

We had the opportunity to take our adventure bikes to the Gold Butte National Monument near Mesquite, Nevada in March 2023. Having lived in Las Vegas and now living in northern Utah, I've traveled through Mesquite probably hundreds of times and had never heard of Gold Butte until a friend mentioned it to me. I watched a few UA-cam videos, mapped out a route in Gaia GPS, recruited a few friends ...

As often is the case being an old man rookie, I have the opportunity to go riding with those who are much more skilled than I am. I love it though because it pushes me to become better. In this video I am riding with my friends the Knights (aka Ride with the Knights) at the Knolls OHV Recreation Area in Utah. I'm sporting my 2019 Husqvarna FE 250 as usual and wear myself completely out between ...
KTM 890 Adventure S and KTM 390 Adventure - Are they off-road worthy?

Power versus agility. We take our KTM 890 Adventure S and KTM 390 Adventure bikes to a section of the Great Western Trail in central Utah known as the "Velvet Ridge." Are these two bikes worthy of more than just forest service/logging/fire roads? Is power more important than agility for trails like this? My son and I make a 400 mile trek to central Utah pounding pavement and riding dirt trails....

How I ended up on a KTM 890 Adventure Bike

Originally I had intended to purchase a 2022 KTM 390 Adventure. Instead, I ended up with a KTM 890 Adventure. My video explains why and has some first thoughts and impressions about the bike. This is my first moto-camping trip on any bike and takes place near Strawberry Reservoir in Utah.

Late April ride at Soldier Pass on the Husqvarna FE 250, Kawasaki KLX 230R and Yamaha WR450. We hit up the Nutty Putty Cave as well as Little Moab on this beautiful spring day. I know we aren't that exciting to watch riding. We're slow but consistent. For us, having a good day on the bikes is more important than just going fast. It's all about the adventure.

Best trail out there
Mine turns on and rides fine but still on what can cause it ?
Next time you do this job, PUT CAR STANDS UNDER THE CAR because if your jack fails....good night.
I do. If you notice in the video you can see the jack stand next to the floor jack. See 6:33 in the video. I always recommend the same. Safety is paramount. Thanks!
Looks fun....nice!
So just to be sure, if I use the sub harness on my Honda pioneer 520 which will supply the power, what do I need to do with the pos and neg lead cables that were meant to go to the battery? Should they be wrapped and capped off for possible future use or just cut and capped to prevent a possible short. Or are these the ends that I will cut and put the quick connect on leading to the sub harness that will now supply the power?
cool, do you think it'll hold my gps, about 21mm / .085 thick? 5.4" x 3.25"
Always keep the old one in the trunk just in case (as long it's in OK condition)
Can you leave this connected to the battery terminals without draining the battery? Thanks
If it is plugged in, then yes you can as it will maintain the charge on the battery. If the charger is unplugged I don’t see why that would be a problem. It may cause a little more drain on it than if there weren’t two metal clamps latched to it, but I don’t see how it would hurt. Why would it remain connected if the charger was unplugged from the wall though? Not sure that would be the case.
That looks rough
Yeah, when not in the sand it was really rough.
I live in Sandy, where is this and what trail?
That’s up Payson canyon by the Payson lakes. There are single tracks shown on most forest maps for the area.
Where are this trails at?
This is up Hobble Creek Canyon near Springville, Utah.
Much easier to prevent falling in those kinds of situations if you stand while riding. Geat vid btw
True dat. I try standing up as much as possible, but I was exhausted that day especially after the first time getting stuck in the mud. Thanks for watching!
Should never let batteries set on concrete 😉
I’m curious about this. I’ve done some reading online, and it appears this may no longer be the case with modern batteries.
well done morning from Ottawa
Just tried this on my KLX203S (road legal version of this bike), and it does the same thing. The KLX230S also has a 6 pin Kawasaki diagnostic port plug, and next to that is another single wire. Grounding that wire causes the ABS light to flash, presumably a status code for the ABS. My KLX230S keeps getting the same fault code , for the speed sensor, including this time, as its flashing the same sequence of long and short. The speed sensor got replaced under warrantly about a year ago, and since then I had to get the code reset by a local repair shop about 6 months ago, but the engine light came on again about a week ago. I was told that it was caused becuase I fitted shorter brake and clutch levers and the clutch lever sense switch was not being pressed by the new clutch handle, but I fixed the clutch lever adjustment ages ago, and checked immediatly after the engine warning came on again, and the clutch lever switch is working fine, i.e the bike won't start in gear with the clutch released, but will start if the clutch is pulled in. So this looks like the same problem that soooo many other people have, and is some sort of glitch in the ECU or a wiring fault. Unfortunately there seems to be no way to clear the fault code apart from taking it to a bike shop which has a kawasaki approved diagnostic reader, and the bike shops charge 1/2 hour labour to reset the code as does the dealer. :-(
Thanks nice job god bless
Did you find the a/hr rating on the 2x2 compatible with full sized batteries?
I’ve charged my full-sized 12v camper trailer batteries with the charger several times.
Fellow ADV and 890 rider. I've been considering moving over from GoPro to something like the Insta360 ONE RS twin edition package. I am a total newbie when it comes to 360. I normally edit my GoPro in Wondershare's Filmora X. My concern is how to do editing of my 360 footage in something like Insta360 Studio and then importing it to a conventional POV video edition like Filmora. How do you create your uploaded video? Any ideas, solutions, etc. for your 360 mounting hardware? In your video you mentioned the Insta360 motorcycle kit is not adequate. Great video and nice bike.
Súper Awesome video
Using a bar for leverage was key. Thank you
How u liking the Timp? It would be awesome if you can do a full bike review
I like it a lot. Unfortunately, I don’t have a lot to compare it to since this is my first mountain bike. I do plan on doing a review of it once I get some more hours under my belt. I do like how Fezzari does the personalized setup to adjust the bike to your size and riding style. It fits really well.
That was a ton of fun!
Super fun!
wow... incredible
Thanks for the video, which windshield do you have on your 520 and do you like it?
It is from a family owned company called USA Windshields. Here is a link to their web site. usawindshields.com They are well built and made from quality glass.
PERFECT CAMERA ANGLE AND MIC PLACEMENT.
That looks like a really good time Greg! "Today, I'm grateful for good brakes"
I have the 890 standard model and am loving it. I have a KTM 250xc for actual trail riding so the S does everything I need. Havent gotten much riding in since buying it due to lifes road bump but thats just about done so I am looking forward to finally getting to explore.
Looks amazing!
That was great! Looks like the last one could have had some consequences.
That was a good time!
My great grandfather Sven Bjorkman built a sawmill in the far meadow of Bjorkman hollow. We still have the family homestead in Daniel's, Utah. He and 3 of his friends hand dug a creek for 6 miles with picks, so that Daniels could have water diverted from the muddy creek. It was my grandfather's desire that the community could then grow more food. Which he transported by wagon to the mines in park city. He sold the produce to the miners. He is listed in the pioneer history book available in Heber. It truly is a magical place. Thanks for your video.
Thanks for sharing that. It’s always cool to learn about the history of some of the places you get to visit. There is so much rich history in the west.
I was in Moab in May, but didn't explore the San Rafael Swell area. This is a great motivator to go back and explore more! I definitely want to check out Goblin Valley. So cool you ran into Amanda and Gary too!
Very cool! There is so much good riding in the Swell. I've done Black Dragon Wash but it's been several years. You need to add Poison Springs Wash Road (further south of the Swell before Hanksville, but not far from Goblin Valley). Depending on the time of year, so long as you can cross the Dirty Devil river there is a great loop from there down to Hite Marina at Powell. Glad to see you getting out and riding!
You’re a Hard Boiled rolling film studio!
Dont bother. Look at it! Quadlock is the way to go
They both have pros and cons. I currently use the Quad Lock. Sometimes it drives me nuts trying to get the phone connected back to the base. I use the vibration dampening attachment. I’m sure it dampens it some but definitely not enough to keep the phone from shaking pretty violently on rough roads.
@HardBoiledGregADV Are you pressing the release tab when you are attaching the phone to the base? It makes it a lot easier. Also, the anti vibration mount is to reduce the micro vibrations that can and have ruined the camera lenses in modern phones. Was never going to stop it juddering over rough roads.
Yes. I press the release tab in when I mount it. Lining up the slots and pressing it on at the right angle seems to be what messes me up. Sometimes I get it right on, and sometimes I sit and fiddle with it for a while before I get it to snap into place. I agree that it is a better mount than the RAM Quick Grips. It just frustrates me sometimes getting it on.
I like your hand guards. Can you tell me the brand and model number? I need to get some for the 230R I just bought.
I have the Cycra ProBend hand guards on the Husqvarna. I really like them. The Kawi 230R has no hand guards.
no Problems with Vibrations and the cam in the iphone?
I never ran into any. I have since switched to the Quad Lock mount and case for my phone and am using the motorcycle vibration dampening optional part. I like it because it easily locks into place.
I like how you did the screw on the back instead
Is that an aftermarket bumper or OEM? I just picked up a 2023 520, thanks.
That is a Honda OEM part. It was a $300 add-on from my dealership at the time of purchase. That was without installation which I did myself.
has become of your iphone, is the camera still working?
Well, that iPhone Xs has been handed down to my son and is still working. I don’t believe there are any camera issues with it.
Hey lets take a perfectly reliable 20 year old engine design and add sensors and computers to it !! ARGHHH!!
Well it is fuel injected now which wasn’t the case just not long ago. That’s a huge plus in my book. However, as seen in another of my videos it does create some failure points that didn’t exist before. (See when my son flips the bike over, it lands on a rock and crushes the system power button). There is a balance between tech and no tech for sure.
My 2003 XR 200r still runs on first kick, im getting rid of my KLX 230 that's only two years old with a check engine light.
I don't look at them bikes as beginner bikes I look at it as the people that have tried all the big 300 KTMs and Husqvarna that have found out they're way more bite than they need or can handle and end up getting a 2:30 and having a hell of a lot more fun
Great video HBG!!!
Glad you enjoyed it! It was a fantastic recommendation.
NICE! My son and I have the same 890s and 390 adv - we're planning to do the same type of runs in the future! Well done and inspiring for sure!
Cool, thanks! You guys will love it!
Have you added anything else to the harness since this video? Could you connect a winch to this harness Without having to go all the way to battery? Thanks.
I actually haven’t added anything else to the harness since I put it in. I don’t know why you wouldn’t be able to hook a winch up to it.
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ all❤❤❤❤❤❤
How do you have your phone mounted ?
I actually have another video about some mounts I have used. See the “RAM Mounts Quick-Grip Phone Holder Comparison Standard vs XL” video. ua-cam.com/video/Dsr6-NypQhc/v-deo.html In this particular video, however I have a Quad Lock mount with the motorcycle vibration dampening attachment.
Since you have both and now have a few miles on the 890... If you had to pick just one... would you still have selected the 890 over the 390??
That’s a tough question. We took both of them down to Gold Butte National Park near Mesquite, Nevada two weeks ago. That terrain was just fine for both. The power of the 890 was nice to have for some long stretches. That said, knowing what I know now, I would probably choose the 390 Adventure. At half the price, it’s just a super capable bike. If KTM comes out with a 390 Adventure R (which has been hinted) I would probably sell my 890 and buy it. If you plan to go riding alone the 390 is much easier to get out of a tight spot.
@Hard_Boiled_Greg what's the difference with the R series? I very nearly pulled the trigger on the 390 for my first motorcycle ever this year, but I have too many vacations planned. Next April I will 100% be purchasing one unless something unexpected happens. Gonna do some practice on my mom's Vespa until then. 😂
There isn't an R series model for the 390 Adventure (hoping it comes), but the R series for the 890 Adventure is KTMs more off-road worthy variant. The 890 Adventure R has a better off-road suspension than the standard 890 Adventure model has. It also stands a couple of inches taller giving better ground clearance. With the 390 Adventure the only choice you get is the color. I'm hoping KTM comes out with a 390 Adventure R.
Is the relay for the signals, the one in front of the headlight or is it under the seat?
Oh, good question. It’s been so long since so did that. The video is pretty detailed. I just watched part of it again, and I just disconnect the existing lights without having to install any new relays. The existing light connections are all past the battery compartment near the rear of the bike.
