i started a sustainable fashion brand. here's how.
I have a box of women’s fancy handkerchiefs that I want to quilt together into a duvet cover. I’ll quilt them onto new sheets for the envelope of the cover. Not sure if this will look too sketchy and not professional, but I think if I sew them together by hand, this will control the look of the edges.
That is a vintage chenille blanket, not just "fabric."
I bought my sewing machine 2nd hand in brand new condition last yr last week got a seger 2nd hand also ,taught myself sewing watching UA-cam and pinterest videos, love informative videos like yours subbed ❤from South Africa 🇿🇦
Completely off topic but this hair looks so good on you
thank you so much! ☺️
I love this! I volunteered at the registration desk at a conference last year, and people kept returning broken lanyards (the clasps popped off easily). The facilitators wanted to throw them away, but I asked if I could keep them. They are made of a beautiful bright blue ribbon, about a cm wide. I like your idea with the rope to add texture to a fabric. I wasn't sure what to do with these, but I might try that. Other suggestions are welcome. I also thought about making little blue roses with them, which could also be added to a garment.
Love this!! you could definitely add it on top to create a texture or depending on how many you have, maybe you can weave them all together and create a bag??
@eleanorstieva ooo thanks for the idea. I think I might have enough for a small handbag
I got that sewing machine for Christmas! (The A16 :D) such an informative video thank you so much!
Amazing!! Have fun with it!
Hi Eleanor, I just started watching your videos and the amount of effort you put into them is amazing! I thoroughly enjoy watching and learning from you. You had mentioned some of your fav youtube creators are illustrators, non fashion ppl etc, could you list some of them? so interested to know!
Thank you so much! Yes, I watch a lot of house/home content, some illlustrators, and a few fashion ones. Some of my fav channels are @nevertoosmall, @alexandragater, @jennaphipps, @FranMeneses, @KatieMai, @LolitaOlympia, and @hautelemode.
The funny white fabric is a chenille bedspread. For the last 40+ years I have dyed them and made them into jackets, mostly. Sometimes a few other things. Can't wait to see what you do with yours.
ahh also a good idea!! I'm interested to see what it will be like to sew
The fabric you showed 2nd is called a Candlewick bedspread….. it’s made by doing a knotted embroidery technique which was developed in the USA. Historically it was made using muslin and the same cotton thread that made candle wicks …..
@@Dizzycow-Tina oh wow super interesting! thank you for sharing <3
Corduroy is a winter fabric but it looks great that's what you're talking about is going to be fantastic
I think so too!
Can’t wait to see all the garments!! 😍😍😍
I can't wait to make them all! haha
The yellow and white is a chenille bedspread (had to google). It means caterpillar in French 😊
ahh never heard of it before! sounds fun haha
You could make a shirt out of all the jewelry bags
i had that idea as well just unsure how.....lol. i want to explore more with it though!
You should totally make some wide leg pants with the yellow and white textured fabric
oooo could be fun
I'd suggest hooded bathrobes! The fabric would really suit it.
@@janicec3453 good idea!! a hood is always fun
Think it’s what they called a candlewick bedspread,
never heard of that before, interesting!
@ they sell the modern up to date version on Amazon.
omg I can’t wait to see the bomber jacket + mini skirt set!!
i can't wait to make it!! i really hope there's enough for a mini skirt, i haven't properly measured it all out yet!
Isn't that a vintage Chenelle bedspread?
tbh i have no idea lol i found it at the thrift store!
If you didn't show that picture of a market, I would have never guessed you were from the Neherlands! Bedankt voor de tips, ik zal ze zeker gebruiken als beginner💖
I am actually Canadian but I live here in the Netherlands! I love it <3
I’m from Toronto. Thanks for the lesson
Thanks for watching!
I feel you on looking 12 and not being taken seriously haha. I haven't aged since like, junior year of high school 😅 and my playful sense of style doesnt help 😆
😂 a small struggle but will benefit us in the long run haha
You can sew without a machine
Great use of space. Look around your space and find something you can use as a brace. Example: Turn small suitcase , board, think!
Thank you! And yes, I tried, but unfortunately my suitcases are still a bit too short haha. I'll find something though!
Hey, I like floral prints and bright fun, colourful material. A neutral colour to me is pink, I just find it goes with everything!
Love your studio girl!
thank youuu ☺️
Happy new year!!!!!!! <3
Happy new year!!
I’ve been thinking about learning to sew on a machine for years! This is my year. Thank you so much sharing your experience
this is your year!! i'm sure you won't look back once you start :D
I’ve been sewing for like 6 years now. Something I would recommend is a loop turner, I still don’t have one and use a skewer. So even that would work if you plan to make tops with straps. I also love the UA-cam tutorials!! that has saved me so many times, after leaving school and needing to teach myself how to make a lot of things.
Also absolutely love scissors I have so many pairs of paper and fabric scissors. I also have a rotary cutter and a huge mat I got from my Nana. My mum got me electric scissors for Christmas which I have to try out
Yes i have a loop turner, it works great on most fabrics. I didn't get mine for a few years after I started sewing. Something worth adding to the sewing kit later on though!
Bottom hole stitch is also optional. My VERY old sewing machine had only straight stitch and zigzag stitch (4 width only). In the manual there was instructions for making button holes with zigzag stitch.
I've never seen a machine like that before, super interesting!
"Without a machine you cant sew" *me who has made clothes and cosplays by hand for over 10 years* You say what now??
that's super impressive! hand sewing full garments requires a lot of patience and skill :)
Vintage machines are amazing , I use a 1971 baby lock and a 1970,s bernina record , They haven’t ever missed a beat , I oil my machines and clean them, No servicing required. Modern machines need servicing every year or 2 , it ends up being really expensive.
that's amazing! they were really built to last
I have two from the 50s and 1 from the 20s al for free. They just needed a little oil and they sew through anything.
@@Poopiepies amazing!
Perfect timing!- maybe you can answer something for me about the large thread cones please? I have been wanting to get these for colors I use most often (which are primarily black, white, and off-white, just as you said!), but I’m confused about what to look for. When I search “sewing machine thread cone”, different things come up, including thread cones that are labeled as “serger” or “overlocker” thread (I live in the U.S. for reference)….My understanding is that these threads are very lightweight and different than sewing machine thread(?), so I’m confused on what to look for in the description or title of a product to be sure it’s appropriate for use with a sewing machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated- love your videos! ❤
Great question! The difference is the weight of the thread. The all purpose sewing machine thread is 3 ply (usually tex 40) and serging thread is 2 ply (tex 27) so you're correct about it being more lightweight. For myself, I use 100% polyester serging thread in my sewing machine and have been for years. I haven't had problems of my thread breaking in garments. I also make sure I double stitch any high use areas like underarm seams and crotch seams. Doing so, adds more durability to the seam and it has always held for me! This is just what I have been doing for the past several years. I hope this helps!
@ Oh that’s interesting and good to know! Thanks so much for sharing! 😊
Great tips! ❤
Thanks so much!
Happy new year! I just started tiding my basent sewing and art studio alongside with your videos. And I really like them all. 😊 I didn't know you where located in the Netherlands. I live about an hour away from your location in Germany. 😊
happy new years to you as well! Always feels good to have a clean space again. :) Yes! I am in Maastricht.
I’m a pretty experienced sewist and I 100% agree with you on purchasing a good basic sewing machine. I wasted tons of money buying sewing machines that had all the bells and whistles and honestly I use very little of either of them. No bells, no whistles. Also, I agree with you regarding thread. I have again, over the years, purchased way too many colors when I only really need a few basics. I would add to your list of black, white and cream, a medium to light gray. Great video.
Sometimes the more simple it is, the better it is! Eventually I want to get an industrial machine, I miss sewing on those, and they only have the one stitch which is really all you need! Someone else mentioned grey as well, not a colour I personally use, but a great add to the list! thank you :)
Great video! I would include a tape measure as an essential tool as it’s important to take your measurements to determine sizing 😊
you know, I totally didn't realize I forgot this until you mentioned it 😅 it's definitely something that should've been included! I will update the list haha thank you!
if you are able to get hand me down scissors you can have them sharpened if they are blunt.
very true! but I do find it hard to find a place that sharpens scissors. I'm still looking because i have many scissors that were handed down to me that definitely need a good sharpen lol
@@eleanorstievacheck your local fabric shops and or sewing machine shops.
@@eleanorstievaaround here hardware stores will do it for you. They also sharpen knives. 😊
@@birgittev4176 oh that's something I should try then! thank you!
@@eleanorstievaYou can also ask at cooking shops where they sell chefs knives, they offer knives and scissors sharpening
i used a lot of Mood Fabric's free patterns, the lavender tee and linda pants were good basics!
I didn't know they had free patterns, that's amazing. thank you!
Good video. I would add light or pale grey to thread list.
not a colour I use, but I can see that it would be a great add to the list!
Me too. I use mostly pale grey in my overlocker/serger. Best colour match for most colours.
your grandma sewing machine was durable and great❣❣
It really was!
Loooove this!
thank you!!
You saved the best for last 😂. Love the maxi dress! ❤
hahaha i did. thank you!!
Where is your cutting desk from!? It looks like such an incredible size and my back is so tired from cutting from the floor 😅 x
it's actually an Ikea desk! the name is LAGKAPTEN / MITTBACK i found mine on facebook marketplace, and tend to see them often so definitely worth checking there first :)
@eleanorstieva ah you're an angel thank you so much! Have a lovely New Year 🥰
The dress you said was a fail was actually the piece I was most excited for you to show off bc I liked it so much! The fabric is so beautiful, and the ruffle collar and the silhouette are so cute!
Oh haha! The silhouette is definitely fun!
So many great piece! Well done! I love the last piece, the longer dress!! 😊🩷
Thank you! 😊
Such a cool little creative space. Why not paint that one little wall? or better yet...WALLPAPER!
just unsure if i can but something i'm looking into!
You can maybe just hang up one of your “sample” fabrics on the wall behind your clothing rack. Or just use wrapping paper….or move your clothing rack so you can hang up your peg board and maybe get a coupe more to cover the whole wall….over the sample fabric or wrapping paper of course.
this is the only layout that really works but hanging up a fabric is a good idea! something to consider for sure
Is the striped bag hung on the rack from a pattern of yours or someone else? So cute!
no, it's a free pattern from Puff and Pencil: puffandpencil.com/products/hangaround-bag?srsltid=AfmBOopSDPngWz1356CTqeoWkfUNcfXy8ws8NzbreUH2AelBFtzCAfl_
Have a wonderfull holidays and happy new year to you too!🫶🏻 Industrial sewing machine is a dream of mine as well. 😌 I feel like people that have small space are able to get so creative with storage and layouts, I love how you saved/reused your old Ikea thing into your table. Fingers crossed for those extra legs🫶🏻💪🏻
Thank you! You too!
@ thank you🥰
Great updates!! 😍
Glad you like them!
May I ask what is your almost full time job?
I work in retail 😊
Do you have a pattern for this bow vest? Literally obsessed with it and would love to make it for winter next year
no i don't but there seems to be a lot of interest in it, so it's something i will look into!
