Danny the Miniature Horse - 23 December 2024
Drive # 260 - Gifford Road - 3.6km + Paddle in the River
Danny and I went for a summer evening outing.
Just a short drive to stretch the legs and put smiles on our dials followed by an evening paddle in the river.
I hope you find this as entertaining as I did, I love the way he gives me sass and communicates with me, if you watch the part where he gives me lots of laughter you will see him give me the fingers, be stubborn and then be the child that you use their full name on who knows it's now 'not negotiable' but he still gives me more sass as he does it.
I love my little man so much, he is one of the few things I have in my life that brings me joy so I appreciate him and love to share him with anyone who wants joy in their lives too.

Drive # 257 - Taylor River Reserve - 3.1km Danny and I went for a drive and all was well till we came to one of our regular crossings. It has a drop down into the river which is a bit of a hard hit but that's normal, then we stop in the middle so he can cool his feet and have a drink if he chooses. I asked Danny to walk on, and slowly the right side of the cart lifted and the left side dropped ...

Drive # 256 - Taylor River Reserve - 11.2km Wonderful drive with Danny, testing out his lamanitis recovery, seeing how his feet were feeling, blowing out the cobwebs and stretching the legs. Pleased he was feeling much better this time and I'd made some adjustments on the cart so it travelled a lot nicer and I think he appreciated that. @deborahross4868 thank you so much for your lovely comments. We have worked so hard on being a team through many hours and many miles together and I do know he trusts me and that makes me happy. It was why I was so broken hearted when we had our accident, not for the damage to me, but for the fright he got. I do feel confident he will get his courage back as we built such a strong foundation together and he never even flinched when I put the cart back on him. Haters are always gonna hate sadly even when they don't truly understand what they are seeing or misconstrued what they saw.

    Why are you asking him canter?

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 21 день тому

      Thank you for your question. Sometimes it's because we need to evade off lead dogs, sometimes it's to get ahead of vehicles, sometimes it's because we have to remove ourselves from an area for any number of reasons but mostly it's for fun. Usually he takes very little encouragement to hoon but he was more cautious this day because this was retracing our accident trip for the first time so it was more his lack of confidence and normal fitness this day causing his hesitation as we aren't back in full work yet as I am still recovering.

    You r cruel and need to be arrested for abuse of your equine you clearly whipping this poor pony over working the pony how you even sleep at nite or look in the mirror you need to be arrested for animal cruelty and go to prison

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 21 день тому

      You obviously don't pay attention, if you look properly, I am not "whipping this poor pony", I'm cracking the whip (making noise and encourage) or hitting the ground the vast majority of the time, do you think he'd snuggle and cuddle me and work with me if I was indeed beating my pal or being cruel in any way to him? Perhaps if you wouldn't make an educated snap judgement, and simply be a keyboard warrior if you attempted to educate yourself more as my videos are intended to do. I am sorry you didn't enjoy it unlike others who have followed my videos do and found them either entertaining of a helpful resource, you are welcome to move on. My horse has a mentally, physically and nutritionally balanced life and is happy and healthy 90% of his days, can you say the same?

      @DeeinNZ 21 день тому

      @lauradorr6558 hopefully he will get more and more confident on each trip. It was such a scary accident it will take a moment. The cart pushes him around as it bounces over the rocks and keeping his footing can be a little challenging especially if we add slippery weed and fast flowing current to the mix so it will take him a minute.

      @ahashdahnagila6884 not that huge. It's part of the local reserve, this is Marlborough New Zealand in the South Island, sadly we are over run by vineyards though most won't allow access to them but this one is on publicly owned land.

      To be honest, it wasn't a fear for me, it was for him. I am hoping he gets better and better though. We need to do lots more river runs, those are the scary places because the cart bouncing over all the river rocks shoves him around and makes it a little scary for him to get his balance. Problem is, those are those only access to water we have these days.

    Just an update I have recently returned from being back in hospital, as of today it's 21 days since the accident and I had to go back to hospital as the damage to my stomach was intense. I had been in constant pain since the accident and the haematoma had hardened significantly. It is currently a 20cm x 20cm rock hard area and they were considering operating as they were concerned I had cellulitus. On further observation they decided to not operate, keep me in for a few days to monitor and put my on a double course of antibiotics. They released me after 3 days and I have been sent home to get further rest and a full course of antibiotics and the hope is that they will deal with the infection and the haematoma will just be reabsorbed by my body in time ... it could take some time though and I won't be taking Danny out again until this pain subsides so I am at my full strength for his first outing back in case he is a little taken aback after our accident. Meanwhile the cart has been fixed and is ready to go again. I appreciate all the support and well wishes and we will be back again soon.

      @makeitdofarm3076 I am hoping my Mr Fixit can indeed fix it. The wheel snapped straight off, the metal it sits on was still inside the wheel so he should be able to punch that out and weld a new heavier piece of steel onto the axle.

    Thanks for sharing! Most equines in harness arent intended to gallop by the way - more of an extended trot - wouldn't you say? Do you watch other drivers POV videos? The flapping reins are distrubing as well..

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 2 місяці тому

      Thank you for your comment, you are welcome for the sharing. I find your comment 'most equines in harness aren't intended to gallop' interesting ...1-he's not galloping, he's cantering, 2-why not? Do you not see horses in marathon classes and scurry classes going at speed? We don't show, we don't compete, we do this for fun, going fast IS FUN, he loves it and so do I. Yes I watch lots of other drivers, I have some favourites and it's always interesting to see what others do. When it comes to horses, we all do things differently, nobody is necessarily right or wrong, we are different and celebrating differences is a grand thing, life would be boring of we were all the same. Do you mean the reins are disturbing because I refuse to have hold of his mouth unnecessarily or because we use them as an encouragement at times? If it's the use of them instead of the whip, that's the way he was trained, and he responds to cajoling more than insistance via a whip, he can flat out ignore the whip if that's his mindset at the time.

      Yes, it was arranged to go out with them. He loves company but most are too scared to go out with us because they all think their horses will be scared. The Gypsy is young and inexperienced and in less than 5 mins he went from 'what the heck is that?' to 'ok, I need to play with that, it looks like fun' to 'get out of my way'. It's never the horses who are scared, it's always the people who create the fear.

    The leaves have begun to fall, I hope this means you two can go out without getting overly hot. Danny seems to really like the river water and does not mind helicopters flying by, he is a gem.

      Thank you for your lovely comments, yes though sadly it means it will get cold quick, we all love the inbetween seasons, not to hot, not to cold ... though if you notice he's getting super fluffy now, I gave his tail a winter chop last night, he will be clipped soon and feel better, if I don't clip him out for winter he overheats far too much. No he is used to everything flying around, the Taylor River is right beside Omaka airport where they teach pilots to fly so when we travel up and down it there are always planes practicing take offs and landings so a lot of them come pretty low over us, every now and then the shaddow will give him a bigger fright than the actual plane. He LOVES the river, Marlborough has such hard stoney grounds I think the water is soothing on his feet. I love the rivers too which is why when I go places I try really hard to get access to one as I know he appreciates the drink, especially if we are out for 3 hours or when it's warm out.

      Thank you for your lovely comments. Yes, it's hard when you don't have company, we love it and they love it, my biggest issue is people think their horses will be scared of the cart but the reality is, it's the people who are scared, very quickly the horses don't even care.

    I love seeing the autumn come to your part of the world when we are experiencing spring. I am looking forward to seeing the grape vines turn different shades of autumn colors depending on the variety. I live in wine country here in California and I love going up into the hills to look down on the vines in the valley below with each field turning a different color.

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 8 місяців тому

      Aww thank you for your nice comment. I have a bit of a conflicting feeling about the vineyards, very few of them allow access to their headlands which is the best surface and the safest place for us to be. Where you see me go through vineyards is usually only because those parts are on public land and they have no choice but to allow us access. It's rather heartbreaking because so much land has been turned into vineyards there are becoming fewer and fewer places to ride and roads are scary these days, especially when your only little so we pick and choose, depending on the day or the week, the time of the day and even the time of the year where we can go.

    When mine acts like a complete bonehead, I try to remember the mantra "make the good things easy, and the bad things hard". So if I get a refusal, I just start working on something else, even if it is driving in circles. Make them MOVE but not in a way that they might enjoy. Then let them rest a bit by what you want, and if for instance he accepted the bridge, let him rest on it (he should be huffing a bit by then) and even give him a treat when he crosses. Then immediately cross back and if he balks he goes right back to work on something hard but not the bridge. They usually get the idea that the thing you want is the easiest (and hence the best) thing to do, and they don't usually shut down in the process. It works for me anyway, so it's just a suggestion. I've had it work with spookers too. Something isn't quite as scary if they get to catch their breath by it and rest.

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 9 місяців тому

      Hi and thank you for your input. I did do all of that (except the treat, I had none) I think I figured out what happened. A few weeks ago on another drive, he slipped going over an arch bridge, I think it's thrown him because he'd been over that particular bridge a heap of times with no issue but because it's another arch bridge, I think he was worried he was going to slip again so considering that, I think I might need to lead him over arch bridges for awhile till he gets his confidence back.

      @@DeeinNZ Yes, that would do it. Leading is a good idea too. Mine slipped on some paint, and it took her a couple of weeks to be comfortable again. She got mad though. She wants to stomp it every time we go over painted markings on the road. They are such interesting creatures.

    I enjoy your videos so much. I stumbled across your older videos a few weeks back and it’s so lovely to see how far you two have come. How often do you drive Danny?

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 9 місяців тому

      Thank you so much for your lovely comments. We got out as often as weather and my health allow, sadly I have health challenges meaning I don't get to do it as much as I'd like but I aim for 3 times a week, sometimes we hit the target, sometimes it's a couple of weeks because we go out. I have numbered every single drive in the video description and dated every one in the title which tells you how many we have done in total and generally how often because I did think that would indeed be a question. I first started putting them up because I could find very little about harness training a mini specifically and then I decided it was a good thing to share because he can be such a challenging pony and I know there were times I felt like a failure so I hoped there would be others out there who might find inspiration to keep going when things aren't going according to plan in whatever their passion is, then I thought it would be neat to document our progress and finally I thought it might be nice for my friends who don't live near me and other people to see some of my local scenery and the places we go so I am very happy to hear you are enjoying our videos and I value your comments, thank you.

    Did you notice improvement in his ability to drive without blinders on? I have a mare that gets a touch anxious (blind in one eye) with them on. I’ve considered putting on a standard English bridle to see if she responds better.

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 9 місяців тому

      Absolutely, he did not do well with them on, he is too nosy, he wants to see all so he would twist himself around trying to see around them, made me think what was the point? So I took them off. Like everything with horses they are not a one size fits all, they will always try and show you what they need.

    You seem to have nerves of steel, do you ever get scared when he acts up like that?

    • @DeeinNZ
      @DeeinNZ 10 місяців тому

      Because we did 19 months of long reining even after doing a good 6 months of getting to know each other before we even attached a cart I got to know him and his reactions pretty well. I know that he likes to buck and I know when he gets super frustrated he rears but thankfully between the 2 of us we know not to push it far enough that he would flip over backwards (I hope) I don't usally get scared persay but the backing up and the spitting of his bit trying to evade me when things are going really wrong I would say unsettles me more than scares me, simply because by him doing so we have completely lost our form of communication and have effectively stopped 'talking' to each other, those times I am sad his reactions have taken over the power from our teamwork so I just work at trying to get him back. I have had one instance where he nearly sent us backward over a bank into a ditch which was scary but I don't hesitate to jump out and grab him (as you saw) if things go into the too hard basket but only for a reset as the fix has to be from driving, leading him through a situation is not a success, it's a fail in my mind. It's one of the biggest challenge in harness and where it differs the most from riding, you MUST have the ability to reassure, reinforce and engage from behind without patting them. It's why harness horses have to be braver out front on their own but still take direction instead of someone clamping legs on and stroking a neck. Thank you for watching and I appreciate your question.
