Propaganda in Video Games
Переглядів 5848 місяців тому
Everyone hates propaganda, but are usually comfortable with messages they view as positive. What's the difference? Are we all hypocrites, or is there a meaningful distinction to be had between art and propaganda? I believe there is, and attempt to lay out that position in this video. My fantastic editor, Gregory Brown, and I created this video some time ago, but didn't post it. I was hoping to ...
You're Not Good at Video Games

This is a video that will likely get me some hate, but I do mean it with love! After 20 years of being a #gamedev, I've always been a little bothered when I see people take pride in being good at #videogames. I notice this whenever I go to a trade show or engage with gamer culture directly. I always just laugh along with them, but it started to bother me because it makes me suspect that many pe...

You don't have to have been a #gamedev for 20 years to know that the AAA #videogames industry is bloated as hell. I poke a bit of fun at #battlefieldv here, but it applies to almost everything. Thanks very much to the creative and talented Gregory Brown for editing this video!
Beware of "Infinite Possibility" Games

These projects are insane, and today I'm going to explain why you should not believe them. Thanks again to the talented Gregory Brown for editing this video together!

VIDEO GAMES ARE NOT MOVIES. (So what the hell are they?)

Part 2 of my tirade about video games, the implicit motivations that make them tick, and the failure of developers to make this clear. In this video, I talk about the moment to moment "doingness" of a player and how it's organized, or not, into a meaningful structure. As usual, thanks to our fantastic Editor Gregory Brown for piecing this together. One note - I misspoke at the end of the video,...

      I've been watching the slow creep of perverse postmodern thought for literally a decade now. I am sympathetic to why he, you, or even myself from time to time, might participate in autistic screeching. The problem is that it doesn't help. There's only one way forward - a sane position well articulated. that's what will purge the left and the right of its crazies and find the sane path forward. The accesses of the other side do not give us the justification to be sloppy with our thinking. It is precisely because of those accesses that we need sanity more than ever. Where the fuck else will it comes from?

Definitely desperately want The Fall 3, or at least to see its story conclude in some way, but I understand that money is painfully important. Even some kind of visual novel adaptation thing could be good to see and relatively cheap to produce, though you'd likely have to do it in a way that doesn't require people to have played the games or else it will still just fail miserably.

    Propaganda shouldn't belong in videogames, period. Never mind WHAT the propaganda is, unless of course in the case of a game like Helldivers, it has to do with the game and doesn't reflect real life crap. Cyberpunk and Baldur's Gate 3 both display gender political stuff, but it's not in your face. It's done in such a way that doesn't distract too much from the world we're experiencing.

      I like that, but honestly man, I do like hearing someone's arguments. IMO some of my favorite movies have very definite things that they're exploring. I think good literature is like this. I suppose it depends on how you draw the line. IMO the line is between unreflective algorithmic horseshit and something you're critically engaging with. if it's the later, by all means, I'd like to hear what you have to say. I might roll my eyes if you're a Marxist dipshit but... eh. I think honest self expression is something that can be identified. "me too" morality on the other hand... yeesh.

    Just saw this sadly: The Fall and The Fall Part 2 were incredible fun! I've been putting off replaying while looking for news on part 3 forever... So it's really sad to hear... I didn't even realize Part 2's sales were bad. I kinda wish creators put some kind of sales figures out there each month after a release, at least until a break-even sales point was hit. People don't want sob stories but, just reporting facts might motivate extra traction from fans to advertise their favorite games and assist or bring in some potential no-strings pateron/etc support when games don't cost much, and/or you want to tip for an existing game or fund an announced project... Maybe I'm being naïve, but like an ad supported youtube video, can't the game continue to bring in additional money over the years with mostly minor upkeep? Perhaps there is a way to catch a lot of new buyers even if the original release is long past.... Hmm... Easier said than done I guess, but I always viewed games like the Fall 2 as a good book. There shouldn't be an expiration date...

      AI is pretty popular now, and the Fall was made before AI really took off... So there's potential for a cult classic status... • @Overthemoongames1
      @Overthemoongames1 8 місяців тому

      Hey thanks a lot for the challenging comment, it's appreciated. That's a very general statement - it's so general that I can't not agree with it to some degree. But in this case, I don't, because quite frankly for the past two decades I've watched (and at times participated in) a profound deepening of cynicism towards our culture and more importantly our species. I know people (in fact I'd wager a large percentage of the people I know) who are perfectly willing to casually repeat this sentiment that people are a cancer on the face of the planet. There's few things I can list that are more stupid than that statement, and I have yet to encounter a single person who defends that position who has critically engaged with it. I could say more but I don't want to waterboard you with text. I think people largely just accept these weird 2D reductions of human behavior because they're vaguely cynical and, like the above example, it A) serves the emotional need for penance without taking responsibility and B) serves the narcissistic emotional need to see one as superior for being able to spot it. To be clear, I'm not against the darkness, but we have to get it right - For example I think that if you or I, or indeed most people were born in 1930's Germany the chances are overwhelmingly that we would have been members of the national socialist party. That's not an easy pill to swallow. it's profoundly dark. But I believe it's also true. Darkness matters, but we need to separate truth from not.

      @Schmidtelpunkt 8 місяців тому

      @@Overthemoongames1 I totally agree on the matter of cynicism as being absolution and ego boost. I'd add self pity as the third variant, although that usually plays into the narcissism. I don't agree that Black Mirror is cynicism. For that it aimed too much to be painful. This is not as much about milking cheap laughs at it now might seem. Satire cannot be an accurate depiction of reality, because it would be impossible to emphasize its point further than it is already visible in reality. Which I think is a general statement which ties into the very definition of satire. Vice versa this depiction is not supposed to be taken as reality. Now, this is easy to accomplish when having shrill productions like Idiocracy, which makes sure that nobody mistakes it for reality, by placing it safely in a distant future. But the idea of Black Mirror (at least up to the Netflix seasons) is to take something visible in current society and just add a few rotations. This creates a strange element but basically keeping the reactions of a society similar to ours. In the case of The National Anthem, this is about the buzz economy. Also the Black Mirror episode does not end with the prime minister defiling the highest office and everybody enjoying it - it ends with it turning out not to matter, as the people immediately forget about it. This is a much darker point - and once more, back then this seemed so exaggerated that one could only take the point as an allegory. Keep in mind that season one was pre-Brexit and pre-Trump. Obama had just won against McCain, who other than allowing the tea party gaining ground by inviting the bimbo Sarah Palin, seemed like a reasonable opponent. The Fox commentators were still seen as slightly nutty outliers. So back then, the exaggeration seemed obvious, and the creators were not cynical - they simply could not foresee a future where this depiction was so close to reality that one would have to mistake it for a serious drama like an episode of West Wing or CSI Miami. Now, however, after the Prime minister indeed having f*cked a pig without anybody caring a few weeks later and people promising money birds which would solve every problem after Brexit on its own and all Brexiters entirely forgetting that in merry ignorance, and of course Trump walking back on statements he has made in the blink of an eye without it mattering at all, there is not enough "what if" to be found to even identify it as satire. But then again - would "We always have been at war with Eurasia" feel like the same kind of exaggeration it did forty years ago?

    Even if you identify as a centrist you're as a bad as the other side (at least according to the left) because you're willing to listen to the other side. Sigh.
