Having a blitz book can be a game changer, and making it can be the play of the week! Unfortunately, it is hard to know where to start or how to do it. In this video, I go over some basic types and show you the general overview of how I do my blitz book.

    Assuming zone would be it's own family. Would you make trap/down its own family, or would it be power or counter family? I would consider power not only a single puller but also wrapping, not kicking.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach 16 днів тому

      For the purposes of this video, that’s how I did it. I know some people Dart as a base block front side power because they pull backside, which is fair but this video was in response to a debate on pulling. For trap/down/belly, they are all their own series in wing T type systems. They should be their own I guess but based on this video criteria trap would be more power and down/belly would be pin n pull. Just a side note, I would try to avoid this problem or categorize based on your system. I would try not to carry all of that. I have found 4 base runs is about all you can do well (bread and butter plays) and maybe 2 what I call change ups (these are week by week plays that are in your system but you don’t run often but they just provide an advantage that week based on scouting)

    4 verts.... gotta run this if they want to play you one high. Really just 2 on 1 basketball with the FS. 4 verts and the flood concept are great examples of why I will not play cov 3 with 4 wides. You better get a rush, because somebody is open.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach Рік тому

      Sorry. It was just easiest to make the point I was going for with that front. In truth, some plays are better vs some fronts and this is an example. If you wanted it from a 4 man, it would be best with an on the line TE because you would need the TE to block on, T to block down on a 3, C to block back on the nose and then your guards could pull.

    Super stuff coach. I'm a Zone guy too. We run a PAP protection from our split zone. IT can be a 6 or 7man protections and is based on our Wide Zone play, your BOSS. The Oline is is all blocking playside rules. The Fullback or Hback, blocks against the flow and is responsible for the backside C Gap defender, or backside DE. I've found this VERY effective as it gives the initial look of Naked. As a 7 man protection this gives you time to take a shot down the field. Draw it up and tell me what ya think. Thanks coach. We also run Naked.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach Рік тому

      I have always been a fan of vertical sets, so we do that, and depending on the screen it could be a quick set or a count (1001, 1002, 1003, GO!). Additionally, we want to be great actors. We want to punch just like regular pass pro and miss. We also want to miss to the correct side which is away from the screen if possible. I even tell the kids to throw some expletives in there when they miss to really sell it and that is the most fun part of any screen drill for them.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach 2 роки тому

      I appreciate that. For me it is 2 main things: 1) Buck pulls play side and backside OL whereas pin usually is just play side 2) Buck in a (traditional sense) usually has a misdirection or crossing action in the backfield, ie “cross buck” and pin usually doesn’t have that action. Both aiming points for the backs are similar, they typically read whomever is the first puller and make their move off of that block.

    The corner has simple reads on this offense, and allows the position to be most effective against this scheme.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach 3 роки тому

      Simplicity of the read doesn’t tell the whole story. First, can he make a play in the run game? Probably not. Second, even if the read (I’m assuming you mean in the pass game) is easy in theory or at practice, it is an entirely different thing when he has to stay on his toes the entire game and wait for just a handful of chances at it. Running the ball 10-15 times in a row before a pass will lull a player to sleep. Lastly, it isn’t about X’s and O’s, it’s about Jimmy’s and Joe’s, meaning that the kid still has to perform.... I’ll take those chances easily with this.

    • @MrChrisjohnjay
      @MrChrisjohnjay 3 роки тому

      @@theassistantcoach Understood. talking about the corner on the rw/te side. I know because i played against this offense , Their is a couple of reads you have to make and if youre a gamer, and a corner who likes making tackles this offense is fun to play against . Not trying to take anything away from the concept of the offense as a whole.

    • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach 3 роки тому

      @@MrChrisjohnjay I don’t really see the relevance other than you played that position and liked playing against this offense... which is fine. • @theassistantcoach
      @theassistantcoach 3 роки тому

      I’m not sure right off but those terms are typically used in run first offenses and usually old school. Maybe Wing T, Unbalanced Single Wing, Veer, etc type offenses. Generally, I would say quick is just an alternative to weak side vs strong side. Players that will usually be smaller and faster and need to pull as opposed to being big, less agile, and being a rod grader on the playside of gap schemes

These three are some of the most influential coaches on OL play in my opinion. LeCharles Bentley has a good platform with some very good teaching resources as well. I would check out The COOL clinic. (COOL Coaches Of Offensive Linemen) On there website you can buy older clinic tapes for cheaper but it will have several of the guys I mentioned above. As far as quick guard/tackle, that is used in some offenses to designate pullers because they are usually smaller. The other side would be the strong side because they are usually bigger and maybe less nimble. They would typically flip sides based on play call. So, for example, on power, your strong side guys always double team and block down and your quick guard always pulls. Not every offense is set up in that manner. Lastly, here is my email if you have some more questions cody@theassistantcoach.net I know this is a lot but I really hope this helps!
