Training Tips: Speedwork for Marathoners

In this short training tip video, Coach Armand breaks down what speedwork for marathoners should look like. There's a lot of confusion when it comes to speedwork. Do we run 200's? 400's? Are those effective for marathon training or should we do something longer like mile repeats? Coach Armand breaks it down!

Overall Thoughts: The HOKA ONE ONE Carbon X 2 is solid uptempo hybrid trainer that is soft enough for daily training and has enough bounce for uptempo runs. The Good: It's softer and has a better overall fit than the original Carbon X. The carbon fiber plate responsive midsole produce a lively ride. The Bad: It simply weighs too much to be considered a true racer when comparing it to other mode...

    Just decided on a pair of 19’s vs the newer 20’s - DNAv2 is a bit softer than 20. I have the Aurora BL with the v3 which is the same as the 20’s and it’s slightly harder. I like both but I prefer the 19’s v2

    Great review - liked AND subscribed! Question: can you recommend a shoe that feels like the nimbus but DOES have more cushioning towards the front rather than rear? Like yourself, I myself also strike front-mid. I’ve been using the nimbus for longer runs and cumulus for shorter/faster stuff so far.

  • @HobyChae

    I bought the Cumulus based on this review, that the Cumulus is more responsive than the Nimbus. I disagree with that assessment and I think the Nimbus is a better shoe for me.

    I’ve been running in more expensive shoes with high cushioning such as the New Balance More V3 and the On Running Cloud Monster. But I’ve got to say that I love the stability and versatility of the Cumulus 23. This is my first ASICS shoe but it won’t be the last!

      Hey Jodhi! Sorry I didn't see this earlier. The main account I use not is my own channel, Behind the Run so I didn't see this. Without doing a whole video and just being super succinct, the Rincon is going to be lighter and softer but not as durable. The Cumulus is more of your typical daily trainer. It balanced so not very soft or cushioned, but enough to keep you protected for daily training.

    Long slow and easy runs - Nimbus Daily run at moderate pace - Cumulus Both shoes are amazing and can be used interchangeably for both types of runs except it's easier to dial up the pace in the Cumulus as opposed to the Nimbus which is more suited for a steady pace long run.

    I will say this about the Nimbus 23: A) Supremely Comfortable (Cushioned everywhere) B) Good Stability (Won't let you shift your feet to the outside when standing) C) HEAVY (Trust me those 2 ounces make a big difference D) Big Goofy Looking Lip (But So soft and comfy) E) Easy To Lace (Long Laces) F) Premium Feel G) Front does NOT have a significant dip (Do they call this a toe drop off?) Thank you for the review. I need to try the Cumulus now.

      Thanks! The grip on all three were surprisingly solid in my opinion. They aren't the most aggressive lugs compared to something like the Saucony Peregrine but they hold up really well and I've had no grip issues on any of them (All three have the same outsole) . Also, I appreciate the support! There's a chance I move more in-depth reviews like this over to my own channel at Behind the Run just so I can cover more topics but still figuring that out because I'd like to crank a lot more out.

    Great review, how do you compare the fit between the 2? Same length and width? How about heel slip? I did get in the Nimbus.. What is the difference in the heel cushion for heel striker between them? Same shock protection? Thank you for your help.

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Thank you! If you got the Nimbus, I'd really suggest to stick to it because in my opinion there really is a significant difference in cushion and shock absorption. I didn't notice any significant differences in length and width and no heel slipping. The main difference I would say is in overall cushion level in the Nimbus.

  • @Kalvi

    Which are the most stable of the three?

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Hi Kalvi, they're all equally stable and have the same general design elements. The Enduris is the one with the largest midsole, so it's the softest of the bunch and if there was one that was maybe a little less stable it would be that one just since you're higher off the ground.

  • @Ipadairpro8636

    I do not like snug fit! To me, snug fit is a trend which people and shoe companies follow for no scientific reason. Altra is going backwards by making their shoes narrower and narrower. Altra is gradually becoming another ordinary shoe company.

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Altra is really just providing different options for people that don't want as wide of a fit while still keeping the foot-shaped toe box. The Torin and Escalante have their wider fits in the Neutral category and the Torin is also available in Wide for people that need more additional room.

  • @papa_ice_water
    @papa_ice_water 3 роки тому

    Big thanks for comparing all 3. Can't tell you how so many reviewers fail to simply state what the difference is between the models in the line. Or even explaining the different kinds of plates. Great video. Sounds like the Flight is built for race day. But would they do for training as well? I don't do many races/timed runs on trails. I do long runs however quite frequently every week. So I would like to keep just one pair of shoes for both training and racing as opposed to when I run on the road.

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Thanks Tony! Glad you liked it. The Flight can for sure be for training, especially if you end up liking the fit more than the others. The Infinite has an oddly sharp heel collar so the Flight may just feel better overall. I didn't feel much of a difference in cushioning between the Flight and the Infinite and I run in the Infinite all the time so I think it's just fine.

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Hi Sean, I think that depends on what other similar styles cost in Ireland such as the Brooks Glycerin, New Balance 1080, and Saucony Triumph. In the U.S all of these styles go for $150 U.S Dollars. Here there are two general price tiers, which are $130 for styles such as the Cumulus, Ghost, Ride and $150 for styles like I mentioned earlier. Hope that helps!

    Great review! My first pair of real running shoes are the NB 1080v10 and I just can't get along with it consistently. Some days it's perfect, others I want to throw them out. I'm actually thinking to pick up some Glycerins or Beacon 3s as a replacement for daily training and relegating the 1080 to backup/recovery duty. Nothing ruins a run for me like having a bad shoe day.

    • @RunWithUs
      @RunWithUs 3 роки тому

      Sorry, missed this comment! That’s a tough one to answer because I really think it comes down to preference. Salomon I always associate with firmer and amazing traction like in the Speedcross, whereas I think the Infinite is more of a balanced shoe with good cushioning and traction while not being so aggressive
