The BEST movement in video game history...
"But your honour, Free Bird was playing..."
yeah, i fucking ADORE this game's traversal mechanics, endless challenge and satisfaction to be had here.
the pendulum physics and absolute freedom given to the player allows for a nearly limitless skill ceiling. even when you've mastered this game, it'll still challenge you.
(unlike SOME Spider-Man games...)
the way the systems are designed strongly encourage experimentation and player expression, no two people will play this game the same way.
sorry insomniac fans, i prefer the dark souls of web-swinging.
(i still like insom's Spider-Man before you go dick-riding them or burning my house down, jesus...)

Song: ua-cam.com/video/_CTYymbbEL4/v-deo.htmlsi=U1l6nb12I6Jb70lu Frontier: Elite 2 is an open galaxy sandbox game released in 1993, decades ahead of its time. It saddens me how underappreciated this game is for how utterly ambitious it is. The graphics and world are timeless and still hold up to this day. Join me on a little trip to just outside the moon's orbit in real time as I share some fun...

Sleep deprived nonsense in this absolute fever dream of a game. If you liked it then that's pretty cool. Next video will either be another clip dump or something different. Thanks for watching.

Thanks to my friend Cameron for the stellar commentary here. More Content Warning clips coming soon.
Played Elite on the Atari 520, docking without auto was a nightmare. Such a scope of activities, even slave trading!
You really tapped into the zeitgeist with this video. Godspeed, may the algorithm be with us all. 🌎
Back in high school, I heard network admins complain about the folder "FRONTIER" that was popping up constantly on lab computers. Of course, I had absolutely no idea what they were talking about. I was playing it from a 5 1/4" floppy disk I had in my backpack. 😼
Can attest...this was a quality game... i would leave it drifting dead slow in deep space and pop out to the shop to enjoy the thrill of not knowing if some space pirate scav was gonna do my dirty while i got milk ,i could have pressed paude but thats cheating...... i am still up there somewhere i can feel it when i look up ,Elite the original was sweet in its original BBC incarnation
I remember playing this in 1996 or so, the CD-ROM version, I believe it had full speech and at least animated video for the 'hologram' of the comms with other people. My 12 year old brain was too simple to understand just how full featured this game was, but it did set the bar high for expectations of future games. I've yet to find a game that did it as flawlessly as this one. I play Elite: Dangerous and Elite: Dangerous Odyssey occasionally now as an adult - But it's just not as perfect as this was.
I saw the thumbnail and though: It must be Frontier 😂
The music really fits the game. I played this game a lot so I know what I am talking about. (Its in the game, dont tell anybody)
Oh, WOW! I don't know how many hours I've racked up in this game but "a lot" is a conservative estimate. We (me and siblings) figured a way to be able to take on military contracts for _both_ factions, which was useful. (Pay the fine if you're caught in the opposite system, immediately take on a military contract for the opposite side and, hey, you're accepted by both factions and you can do military missions for both.) We discovered the hyperjump roll-over bug ourselves, so a little triangulation we could jump to just about anywhere in 2 short hops. But the biggest exploit we discovered was that the autopilot would work in accelerated time, but it would ignore the need for decelleration. Jump to a destination system, give autopilot a target, disengage autopilot, ramp up the target speed to more than 200.000 km/s, hit max time acceleration, watch your speed climb, and climb, and climb, and seconds before arrival, while still in sped up time, re-engage autopilot. You could be doing half lightspeed, but the autopilot would snap dock you, or land you, regardless of your excessive speed. It could save you from in-game days of decellerating. No matter your contract, you'd be on time.
If you have no brain and consequently need for boredom tolerance.
If your talking about scale you definitly need to try Star citizen. Also there is this game called flight of nova which also really reminds me of Elite 2
Ok, be real.... is this fake game?
it's real lol
100% agree, space engine is the best
Music is atrocious for this video. Great clip though!
music is from the game
16x the load screens, or something
I used to play a flash game as a kid that looked a lot like this but it was like a futuristic jet fighter game and I can't for the life of me remember the name of it
RADICAL ACES I FOUND IT
Frontier is quite a good game but extraordinarily difficult to truly get good at.
12:45 That section looks like something out of one of those 1980s retro vr things lol... but it goes on to dive like underwater and then skip across the surface as the sun rises over the planet only its not a planet, its an entire galaxy.
Do you have any recommendations for an Elite-esque space sim for complete dumbasses? I'm recovering from brain surgery and as much as I love the idea of play Frontier: Elite II, the 1993 controls will probably confuse the shit out of me.
unfortunately, space sims are inherently complicated. i'd recommend No Man's Sky. it allows you to pilot a ship and land on planets like elite while remaining very accessible and user friendly. hope you're doing alright, friend!
I played my copy to death on my amiga a500+ Childhood well wasted 🥰
time enjoyed is never wasted :)
This is insane, can't believe there is a 3 decade old game that has seamless experience leaving atmosphere. Far before No Man's Sky.
You went down the driveway to get the mail! One planet, in one star system, out of all the stars in the galaxy, in the 1990s. Man they were cooking with fire back then, but we've only just begun to fully represent the beauty that scale.
This was my first ever space game that I got in 1995... Hooked ever since
"full" 3d graphics.
sure! it might look archaic by today's standards, but it's still a properly simulated 3d environment!
i spent the entire summer of '94 playing this (yeah, summer). Nerfed the game somehow after doing a warp jump to a known system but the game randomly jumped me to somewhere extremely far away, where i within seconds got blasted to bits by unknown aliens. The nerf part is because inexplicably i saved the game (the only save file) after this jump...so every reload resulted in me being blasted to bits by overpowered aliens...and i had no jump-capability anymore. Months of progress...destroyed forever. 12 years later i exercised those ghosts while enjoying a few months of X2: The Threat. That was an excellent experience! Not found time yet for Elite Dangerous...have VR headset so plan on losing chunks of time to it at some point...
Whole game takes 1 floppy disk = 720KB that is 0.00072 GB For scale: this video about Frontier Elite 2 is about 45MB (1080 ver) or 65 times bigger then the game itself...
They actually made the webs shot toward the building and seemingly anchors to it. 2024 they are just imaginary webs.
yep, no trickery here! connecting to a real point in the world and truly arcing around it like a pendulum would irl. Web of Shadows is the only other official Spidey game with true pendulum physics, but the webs don't connect to buildings there :/ Spider-Man 2 remains the champion of web swinging!
The days of eye squint anti aliasing
Buy a big ship, load it with 10 mb4 mining machine and an escape pod. Crash your ship deliberately and your escape pod now is the baddest Eagle Long Range Fighter with 300 tons of capacity, while still keeping its low 25 tons mass…completely OP.
I think Halo 2 is the best space Sim
Propaganda!!!!! No “curvature of the earth” cause it’s a big bowl dude. It’s like Kami’s lookout, gotta get below the FLATEARTH to see REAL curvature!!!!
OK, I can see why the Elite Dangerous community is nostalgic for this. It’s a shame we can’t land on earthlike worlds. If they somehow mixed the shipbuilding and planetary exploration of Starfield with the everything else of ED you’d have a perfect space game.
Is this Avatar 3?
Because of that precise game, i've learned about how space is in constant movement and one little miscalculation and you'll be lost in space or you'll crash into a planet at LUDICROUS SPEED!
se eu pesquiso eu não acho o que jogar...
Completely false title... The 2nd best Space Sim was "Star Control". The 1st best was "Star Control 2"😂
I remember this game fondly; I loved playing it on my Amiga 2000 but in the end, the idea was great but the execution was disappointing. The game was way too ambitious for the hardware of the time, the flight mechanics tried to be realistic but were janky as hell. It also had a lot of bugs and would crash often, which was a real nuisance considering patches weren't a thing back then. Balance also wasn't great, some ships were outright unusable due to their fuel consumption - it could happen that you bought a big ship but ended up stuck in the system you bought it because even with maximum cargo capacity, it couldn't even hold enough fuel to jump to the next system. Still, the game was highly addictive. To anyone who misses this game I highly recommend Elite: Dangerous, it's everything that Frontier: Elite II always wanted to be. Edit: The one thing that always bugged me about this game was that David Braben insisted in multiple interviews that Thargoids were appearing in this game, it wasn't until the release of the sequel Frontier: First Encounters that he admitted that they weren't.
What are you running on? Is it super oberclocked in an emulator?
That flimsy umbrella really seems to tolerate the acceleration and atmospheric resistance very well 🙌.
Is that the Jonathan Creek intro?
I play frontier elite 2 all the time, runs on absolutely anything and is just a solid game.
Lovely
I have refunded all the recent spiderman games after i try the swinging. They have to make it more realistic and fun.
Show them the 3D Milky Way galaxy map with every f.king star and billions of planets. Tell them this is just one floppy drive 1.44mb game.
As decades ahead of its time this simulation is it also shows what a crazy leap technology took in the last 30 years.
Youre actually incorrect about the orbital cities outside of Earth. Abraham Lincoln have 2 City pods connected to the main station, Gorbachev have 3 City pods and Li have 4 City pods which makes it the biggest orbital city of the 3
Sorry to break your bubble, but if you forgot to refuel, we are not stuck 800.000km from Earth. We are actually moving away from Earth at 632km/s....
good point! there's no friction in space, so we're just gonna keep getting further and further from home. better get comfortable! :p
Yes it was great back then, yes I understand the nostalgic feeling, but truth is this game (that I love) is totally and utterly surpassed in every aspect by Elite Dangerous...
Good, but not even close to best, something like Worms Armageddon's Ninja Rope or SSX 3 or Quake 3 is much more complex and better
ssx tricky way better
@@Ryder0_0 because you played tricky as kid or what?
I loved this game! But to be very honest, in the original version combat was pretty much unplayable because you didn't have control over the lateral thrusters. So your only chance was to have the bigger ship. That was fixed only much later with GLFrontier. With direct thruster control, you could make actual use of your spaceship.
