SpaceEngine is awesome, one of the funny things about it is how the landscapes in the actual Solar System look okay-ish (they're rather limited), but then when you look at landscapes on procedural planets they just ramp up the detail stupidly.
All the worlds I’ve added to SE were strictly for looking at from a distance. 8k x 4k elevation resolution looks surprisingly sad from ground level. There has to be some way to add masked procedural detail. If not, my plan to add a set of buildings to my planet based(loosely) on Magic Mountain Row will not work out well.

Dude I have 200+ hours in space engine and over 1000 photos, it’s an awesome program! Whenever I’m bored during my summers I would load it and just explore the procedural planets and stars all over, makes me wish they had been funded more to develop the engine into an actual semi-game. Likely to people like me who are more likely to click on a video be someone with less subscribers. Or maybe it has something to do with the videos being less scripted and more like a friend showing you a cool thing they found. Anyways, I didn't hear about the second best until earlier today, but I've had the best installed for a good while now.

it's accurate down to the meter. every celestial object we've discovered since the beginning of astronomy is accurately depicted in SpaceEngine, stars, planets, and galaxies. as well as trillions of scientifically accurate procedurally generated objects. check the description :)
He's right, you can input the date of known solar eclipses and watch them from space, this game is insane. You can edit planets (not too much sadly), for example change the earths atmosphere.

Now THIS is the stuff I think about if I could make a space exploration game, complete physics engine perfect to reality and real scale and distance, you can fly in your ship faster than the speed of light for long distance but if it’s to short then you aren’t allowed to, you can choose to turn it off for any length if you wish.

@@Shroom-Topp yeah I was basically paraphrasing Sagan because it reminded me of him. but something from the sim hit harder. maybe seeing the earth moon system from afar not only is the earth tiny but the furthest we have ever travelled, at great risk and cost is a very small distance when seen from afar.
All have lived and died on that dot. No exceptions, unless you know something I don't. If you are thinking of the three cosmonauts that died on re-entry, they still died on this dot. The planet's atmosphere killed them. I know that they are often said to have died in space, because they were still above the Karman line when they died, which is often said to be where space begins because planes start being less efficient than rockets at that point, but nonetheless it was the planet that killed them. The atmosphere is part of Earth, and nobody has ever died in or beyond orbit.

good question! it depends on what kind of experience you're looking for. flight of nova is the most realistic orbital simulator i know of i prefer juno new origins to KSP because it's more realistic and has far more customisation. SFS is really cool, too. the 2D perspective makes it easier to understand orbits and rocketry. each game has its ups and downs, but they all share a love for space. ultimately, it's all personal preference. a game that's "the best" for me, might not be for you, and that's okay!
Its a cool engine but sadly I cant get the modern version due to being broke but I got one of the versions that was free on the website like over a year ago from the internet archive thats form 2017.
i poured hundreds of hours into that free version. hopefully, your broke status is fixed soon, so you can experience the newest version of this masterpiece.

SpaceEngine is primarily focused on exploration, it's more of a planetarium than a traditional sandbox or orbital simulator. that said, it does have a flight sim mode as a side feature. overall, i can't recommend this game enough, it's brilliant. but i also recommend you find out for yourself if it's right for you. check the description for more information! :)

you can dynamically alter the FOV in SpaceEngine from around 120° all the way to microscopic levels. telescope built into your eyes essentially. i think i accidentally left the FOV a little too high, so Earth looks a little warped.
And then there is that one Insane Human Who made a Map of the Entire Universe in a 1 to 1 scale in Garry's Mod (Don't ask Me How that Human did it) (It might as well have been Magic)

Of course there are a lot of minor developers or modders who helped him with like nebula models or atmosphere parameters and its modelling, anyway bigger part of work is made by a single developer.

It works like seed in Minecraft, so you can fly to the other galaxy 300 mil ly from Milky way and found amazing planet Gas giant with Earth like sattelite, and precise name of object will lead anybody who'll get it into this place.

good question! yes, i use reshade to add more contrast, vibrance, and film grain to my game. my goal was to strike a balance between realism and aesthetics because i found the default colours to be a bit washed out. give me a second to find you a link to a video explaining how to add it to your own game! Sorry, but this is not the best space sim ever made, that would be Elite Dangerous, with its unprecedented 1:1 scale accurate reproduction of the Milky Way galaxy. Or No Man’s Sky, with its infinite procedurally generated universe. Not Universe Sandbox.

That first zoom out...there is something odd about the way the texture is scaled. Almost like a fisheye effect? Maybe I am imagining it lol.

my goal was to strike a balance between realism and aesthetics because i found the default colours to be a bit washed out.

the full dataset is 1 billion stars, space engine basically can't handle even the 1 million one let alone 100 mil, it's designed for the hipparcos bright star catalogue with shoddy procgen as backup
