United States
Приєднався 14 вер 2023
Welcome to The Outbound Lane! We are about getting away from our phones, meeting new people, and getting out and exploring this beautiful country we live in. This typically comes in the form of camping, hiking and overlanding with my wife Mary and my Dog Atlas, but really, we are up for any kind of adventure.
If you like beautiful sights, goofy people, and getting off the beaten path, then stick around!

Exploring Halfmoon Creek in the Colorado Wilderness
This trip is special as we were joined by my brother and sister in law who came out all the way from Indiana. We decided to take them up to the surrounding Leadville area, up Halfmoon Creek to hike, camp, and relax. I hope you enjoy the video as much as we enjoyed our trip.
Also, sorry if the video quality is a little worse for wear, I uploaded this like 5 times and for some reason it just wont get any better : )

5th Gen 4Runner || Hella Horn Upgrade

Mary's 4Runner horn has been embarrassingly weak ever since we bought it, so we decided it was time to finally replace it. The stock 4Runner has a single horn installed, but the kit comes with 2 horns. If you purchase the connector in the link below, you can easily install both new horns. 3rd Gen 4Runner || 4XInnovations Front Bumper Install
Переглядів 1 тис.2 місяці тому
Ever since I built my rear bumper for my 4runner I've been thinking about what I would end up with for a front bumper. While I usually like to build my own things, life got in the way so I ended up buying a pre-built bumper. This is the second thing I've ordered from 4XInnovations (not sponsored) and I am very impressed with not only the build quality, but also the lead time and the price when ...

Soooo what started as a quick trip to see The Great Sand Dunes National park with some friends ended up being a weekend full of hiking, laughter, and love. Two of our best friends got engaged and we couldn't be more excited for them. 🥂 Cheers to you Rob and Sammi! I hope you enjoy the video
3rd Gen 4Runner | DIY Sleeping Platform & Drawer System
Переглядів 9 тис.5 місяців тому
A few years ago when I started getting into camping/ overlanding, I decided to build a sleeping platform so I could be more comfortable. I had more money than time, so building one myself was the obvious choice, and I know a lot of other people are in a similar boat. The main construction is 3/4 plywood, construction screws, staples and marine grade carpet. I designed it to be able to fold up s...
You've NEVER seen anything like this before || Bishop's Castle
Переглядів 8766 місяців тому
Mary and I took a short trip over to Rye, Colorado where we found one of the most unique and impressive structures in the Unites States. This entire castle was built by a single man, Jim Bishop. It's really a crazy story, so sit back and I hope you enjoy it!
3rd Gen 4Runner | Transfer Case Seal Replacement
Переглядів 2,4 тис.6 місяців тому
This video will show you how to replace the front output shaft seal on a 3rd Gen 4Runner (1996-2002) transfer case. After 250K miles or more, these may begin to leak and its a fairly simple fix as long as you have a few basic tools and know-how. The process should be pretty much the same on the rear output shaft seal, but I'd encourage you to hop over to Timmy the Toolman's channel to get the s...
Exploring Buena Vista | Golden Aspens & Campfires

Whoaa!! Mary and I took the 4Runner out chasing colors again and the destination this time was Buena Vista. We spent 2 nights camping and exploring and it was one of the best weekends we've had all year. You NEED to get to Colorado in the FALL!!. Hope you enjoy the video, thanks for watching.
3rd Gen 4Runner Upgrade | Stitch on Leather Steering Wheel Cover : How to
Переглядів 1 тис.7 місяців тому
How to Install a stitch on Leather steering wheel cover. The steering wheel on my 3rd Gen 4Runner was starting to get a little sad, so I decided it was time for a new steering wheel cover, but I didn't want one of those super cheap slip on covers from the autoparts store. I hopped online and found this steering cover from East Detailing. I'm not affiliated but I must say I am pretty impressed w...
Day Hike | Raspberry Mountain

Mary and I wanted to get out and see the aspens starting to change, so we grabbed Atlas, hopped in the 4Runner, and headed out to hike Raspberry Mountain. It was crazy windy but well worth the trip. Got to see a few aspens and relax near a beautiful creek. Hope you all enjoy and would love it if you'd subscribe!
Budget 3rd Gen 4Runner Build || Daily Driver and Overland Rig
Переглядів 3,1 тис.8 місяців тому
Here's a quick walkaround of my 1998 Toyota 4Runner Overland build. This vehicle has a LOT of history. My dad bought this bad girl new in 1998, it took us on all of our vacations, took me to all my baseball games growing up, was my first vehicle, and is now our adventure vehicle. I started the build about 7 years ago and as with most people, it's changed and evolved a lot during that time. Bein...
Tincup Pass| Fall Camping In Colorado
Переглядів 2768 місяців тому
Atlas and I head up into the mountains to explore Tincup Pass, a couple ghost towns, and some amazing scenery. Autumn in the Rockies will forever steal my attention. Mary couldn't join us this time unfortunately, too busy trying to end cancer I guess. This was a beautiful area with a ton of history and well worth the visit if you ever get the chance. I always love getting to step back in time w...

Our First Colorado Trip!.. And a secret Wedding Proposal???
Sounds goood
It was a definite improvement for us. Btw I ordered that 2nd connector and it was a simple plug and play to get both horns hooked up
Sing it brother. Ray Charles! I hope we get another like him..
why do people not want to show step by step. irritating
Just got mine in today, did you have to cut the frame at all?
That's awesome! Nope, I have the later frame where it has the flat plates on the front frame rails. Bolted right up. If you have the earlier style frame with the rounded frame rail ends, you may have to get creative or contact 4X
Hey! Im looking to do the exact same thing, running into some decision making when it comes to where the seats come up. I know you said you don't have dimensions, but how tall is the platform from the floor in the trunk/if you made it shorter, what height would you go? (We're also small people and would like the luxury of sitting up if its possible) I'll probably think of some other question but thanks in advance!
Gonna order that same bumper. Link for the resistors? Rig looks great!
You won't be disappointed. Appreciate it and thanks for watching. These should get you taken care of: SOCAL-LED 2pcs LED Load Resistors 25W 10 ohm LED Bulbs Turn Signal Error/Blinker/Hyper Flashing a.co/d/dmjEaL1
Awesome video. I just got a 99' 4runner last month. And was looking at 4xinnovations bumper. So, this is great info to know beforehand. Awesome 4runner!
Congrats on the new rig man, I'm sure you will love it. Lead time, price, and quality are all good reasons to snag a 4x bumper 🤙
Nice setup how much time did it take to make. And how did it cost u?
Thanks Tod! I got it knocked out in about 2 weekends and I'd guess it cost around $250 for all materials: plywood, wood, marine carpet, stainless staples, piano hinges.etc
Looks like it was a fun trip. Atlas had a good time. Just got a 180 degree awning for my 4Runner. Can’t wait to use it.
It was, we don't usually love camping in the rain but we had a great time. The Awning is a game changer, you're going to love it
This was awesome. Keep it up, bud. Just found you today.
Thanks I really appreciate the feedback!
Got some good ideas from this. I want to buy a system, but they are so expensive. I think I’ll just do it myself after watching this. Thanks.
I was in the same boat. Liked the nice off the shelf options but so pricey. Im glad this helped you out and i definitely encourage you to build one yourself. Good luck!
Where did you get those metal support legs? Thanks. Great set up!
I made them from some pipe and steel flanges. Pretty basic, and they could certainly be improved upon!
Awesome rig!
Appreciate it! 🤙
Congrats!!! ❤
So sweet, John ... you did an excellent job it's make me cry ....thank you❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it!
First time I heard the 💋 smack I was 🍌 out
Nice and simple without complicating things.
Appreciate the comment!
I have the same leak. I started watching Tims and then came to your video. It will be a great help in fixing mine. Thanks! Then time to figure out where my front differential is leaking from haha
Glad I could help you out! Good luck!
Thanks for the video. Need to tackle that project too.
Absolutely. I've been really happy with it so far, still like new.
@@TheOutboundLane installed it yesterday. Good fit. Tricky getting pieces tucked in good. But pleased with end result. Any recommendations on front seat covers?
Yeah the corners don't like to play nice, I ended up trimming a few corners. Ad far as front seat covers, kinda depends on your price point and what you want. Wet Okole are really popular, made from neoprene so they are Waterproof, and pricey. Carhartt has 2 different styles, their base covers then their precision covers. The precision are a lot less baggy looking but WAY more expensive lol. I prefer the carhartt material over neoprene so the precision ones are probably what I will get once I save up enough money haha.
Luv this...great images of the Aspens, lighting & great feel for your trip!
Really glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for watching!
Maybe slide the orange plates under the RTT to improve fuel efficiency ?
With how the tent overhangs my rack, on all sides, it's not really feasible. I'm trying to figure out a solution for on the rear, but for now this is getting me by!
This is dope.
Thanks brotha!
This is an awesome build. A 4runner is my next vehicle 🤞 and I'll modify for camping. I think I'd split the flip section so I'd still have a back seat if I want. I'm wondering what you'd do differently. Thanks for making the video!
Can't go wrong with a 4runner. One of the most reliable vehicles ever made. I like that idea a lot, that way you could even keep a sleep setup for just 1 person. Lowering the overall height is the main thing I would change so I could sit upright when on top of it. Thanks for watching!
Great work on the platform! I made something similar for my 06 Land Cruiser 120 series, some years back as well. Never did a video on it, but seeing yours makes me want to do one. It’s useful and inspiring for folks like us who want to go and explore but take pride in building our own solutions and not breaking the bank. Subscribed! Greetings from Sweden!
That's awesome! Thanks for the Sub!
I think this is your best yet, you guys. I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. Mary, had I been there I would have kept company with you...while John climbed.
I know this gentleman. I'm actually related to him. I am his niece.
How?
That's a good question! After seeing it in person, truly hard to imagine it was all built by 1 man
Sketchy is the correct description.😂
Without a doubt!! Would not have been surprised at any point if something broke, but nonetheless it is super impressive that one man built all of it!
Thanks for sharing that awesome place with us! Big whats up from South Texas 956!
Appreciate the comment and you checking out the video!
That was awsome!! Thank you 2 for sharing with us all...
Absolutely! Thanks for watching!!
Strong work ! Way to go paying homage to Tim and Sean….. excellence 👍🏼
Absolutely, those guys are fantastic and have helped me countless times working on my 4Runner!
Yeah man, I am holding out hope for a 4th gen, but they are some true OG’s

Sounded like you were breathing pretty hard. What’s the summit elevation?
I definitely was. A little shy of 13k I believe!
Dang that one part of the trail looked sketch. Glad u got out of it! Dope vid.
That section definitely had me sweatin haha. Thanks for checking it out!
Mabybe a video about how you mounted/hooked-up the air compressor and/or the transmission fan??
Yeah that's a good idea, I'll add that to the que! Thanks
I’m sorry, you lost me at “vacation” and “Arkansas”.
Hahaha it did prove to be our least favorite National Park so far
Sick Build! Where should we go in Hot Springs AR other than the junkyard? We'll be there tonight!
Well I wouldn't overlook the junkyard, it was beautiful haha. Honestly I think we spent more time in a neighboring State park. Easy answer is.. go to one of the hotsprings :)
I’m waiting to find out what Atlas thought of the trip. Real star of the show.
He thoroughly enjoyed himself, he got a wee bit chilly at night but all in all he said 10/10 would reccommend
Good video! Just to let you know try shooting the GoPro footage in 16:9 ratio to match the big camera or you can crop to fit in post! Not trying to tell you how to video but it would look better IMO. I’m jealous of you tho my wife and I are in Florida and wanna do the same thing (move out west)
Thank you! And I really appreciate that suggestion I didn't even know that was an option lol. I agree it will look better! It's a big move and not easy, but it's been so great for us, hopefully you guys can find a way to make it happen!
Cute dog!🥰
Thanks! He's a pretty good boy!
Are you interested in fang lights?
Every time I walk past mine I’m like damn I want to use it
you guys are next level in USA u love ur guns lol
Haha absolutely we do! Thanks for watching
Great views, RIP to the legend
RIP to the legend indeed. Thanks for the comment Mr. Perkins!
Love the scenery!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for the comment
Oh awesome! Yet another "overland" channel JUST LIKE all the other ones done by people who pretend to be outdoorsmen. The wine gave it away... Also, gotta love a so-called camping video with 80% music. But not just any music. Music every other run-of-the-mill "overland"m channel uses...
Really appreciate the feedback! Just getting started so the support is great! I didn't realize certain beverages were barred from camping trips. I guess they don't cover that until week 3 of Overland Class. Will keep that in mind for the next trip. Keep on keeping on brotha 🤙🤙
Heating problem is your fan clutch! Next time...straddle the rut
You're the 2nd person to suggest the fan . I'll take a look at it this evening and see about getting a replacement! Thanks
@@TheOutboundLane It's the lock up clucth that is slipping. Not much to look at. It either works or it slips. Good luck!
@@TheOutboundLane This just a shot in the dark, but I bet the A/C is not working all that well either.
Wish I lived somewhere I could do this on a weekday! Looks like so much fun!
It was a blast! Yeah we are fortunate to be out here, actually just moved from Indiana. 10/10 would recommend!
@@TheOutboundLane Nice! I’m in Florida and my wife and I are planning a huge overland trip out there next year and who knows we might move out there after🤷🏽♂️
@@Benjamminoutdoorsthat's how it happens haha. We took a few trips out here and decided to just go for it! Been a year and very happy with our decision. But it is expensive lol
@@TheOutboundLane floridas getting that way too (maybe not quite as much but still) but so many people are moving here and the price of everything’s going up
