Matchless G3L WD Burman CP Gearbox Rebuild
Thank you very much, excellent video, very demonstrative. I have to change the gearbox sprorcket on my G3L48 and I was completely unsure how.
@@diamantinoabreu666 glad I could help. Good luck with your bike
Im having trouble knowing which orientation the kickstart quadrant should be in when i'm fitting the casing?(1956 g3ls burman)I can't figure it out?
If it's the same as the Burman CP then make the teeth face the long end of the case and give it two full turns using the kickstart handle to tension. Minute 15 of the video shows the technique. Hope that helps. Let me know how you get on
Terry, how does that nut on the kickstart operating mech come off? I can’t shift it..
Hi Bob - mine came off fairly easily by using an adjustable spanner to hold the bolt head and a socket to undo the nut. Might be worth trying a little heat (heat gun or hairdryer) followed by a penetrant line WD40 or GT85. Leave it for a bit then try again
I just started refurbishing a 1944 and your videos are most helpful. Alan. Utah USA
This is excellent
Glad you liked it
i'm just in the process of doing the same. Didf you make a rebuild video and how did you stop the bearing from spinning in the housing? loctite?
@@BobbyD-r6w here’s the rebuild video: ua-cam.com/video/qtOatAYs6b0/v-deo.htmlsi=5rtox_iTyMGr-bxo I did use a liquid bonding agent as you will see but it went in so tight it may not have been necessary
@@terryjones6229 thanks Terry!
Great video! Thank you.
What year did ajs/matchless introduce the swingarm ?
Not sure of the exact year but post war bikes got sprung rear suspension in the form of twin shocks and primitive swinging arms. The shocks looked like jam pots and that became an unofficial nickname for Matchless/AJS bikes.
Excellent work Terry; interesting editing, a bit of local history and quite enough drama for one day's ride.
Very good video Terry, one of your best perhaps. I really enjoyed the travelogue and history behind places we take for granted.
My favourite poem. I Am! By jhon clair. I am-yet what I am none cares or knows; My friends forsake me like a memory lost: I am the self-consumer of my woes- They rise and vanish in oblivious host, Like shadows in love’s frenzied stifled throes And yet I am, and live-like vapours tossed Into the nothingness of scorn and noise, Into the living sea of waking dreams, Where there is neither sense of life or joys, But the vast shipwreck of my life’s esteems; Even the dearest that I loved the best Are strange-nay, rather, stranger than the rest. I long for scenes where man hath never trod A place where woman never smiled or wept There to abide with my Creator, God, And sleep as I in childhood sweetly slept, Untroubling and untroubled where I lie The grass below-above the vaulted sky.
Timeless
I had a WD Matchless 350 G 3 with rigid frame , the G3L had a SPRUNG frame. Easy to start ,rode it to work and college daily.
@@DavidRussell-n8e I think you mean the G3 LS had a sprung frame. The 80 miles I rode today on a G3L were definitely unsprung I can assure you!!!!!
@@terryjones6229 you are correct, mine was pre war girder forks
Why does the bike carbon up so frequently.? I have 1959 AJS Csr 650 that after 8400+ miles is only showing slight carbonization. I do use additives in the petrol And use a high zinc motor oil. Would that possibly help? Remember fondly my 1952 AJS M18 single, thanks so much for the detailed video.
@@charlesedenfield8947 it’s a good question and I wish I knew! I can say that it’s not the valve guides (they are in spec) and the bike is definitely not running rich. It is possible that the shut off procedure (exhaust valve lifter) ensures that there is always a small deposit after each ride and this builds up. I’ve done 2500 miles since decoking and I can see build up on the piston but no loss of performance yet. I also use a fuel additive. Any suggestions welcome!
@@terryjones6229 Dunno, but the shutting down the engine using the valve lifter rather than a magneto kill button could have some effect as you’ve got relatively cool air flowing into the engine as the crank enters the intake cycle and such could create soot easily. And build up over time. As you know, twins have no such temptation to lister to that marvelous chug down song of a good single……ha.
Hey Terry fancy coming to Sweden to help with a few bits on my matchless? Can't find a single person who wants to touch it here! I think the swedes are scared of british bikes? I rebuilt the top half but it seems I need cam shims now. Free board free food you are very welcome, plus its stunning around here.
@@ElliotCole333 sorry mate - work has me fully occupied for months to come. Appreciate the offer though
Hi Terry, lets comment on the positives first; beautiful G3L and thank you for sharing the ride out. The 'driver' in the Jag. issue; is the video worth sharing with the police? here in Somerset if you have video footage of dangerous driving the police are happy to take it as evidence with significant prosecutions made.
@@shreddy9601 it’s a fair point but with all the other things occupying the boys in blue at the moment I’m happy to let it rest
great filming, editing and choice of music
@@wetpainticecream thanks Francoise - we enjoyed making the video
Smart editing Terry and a commendably restrained response to that lane-splitting Jaguar driver. The WD Matchless responds well to a light thrashing!

Brilliant video thanks 👍
Valuable information.
To anyone rebuilding G3 or G3L. Ex army bikes, fit the oiltank complete before uniting the front and rear frame sections, cos you can t fit the tank with the frame assembled.
Great effort by u,,,,apriciate
The Matchless sounds great. Thanks for the video.
Great video.
First class coverage Terry. Thanks for taking us along with you and the WD Matchless. Just the one small failure of the 'No names, no pack-drill' rule!
I think you’d have really enjoyed the ride Jonathan. Looking forward to seeing you on the next one
Great video & very helpful. Paul Lucas.
always nice to ride with you! can't wait for the next cheery one :)🎉 😋😘
Me too!!
Another tip for you is CRC gasket remover , it desolves carbon , also you can use a socket and tap it with hammer and the collets, will pop out .cheers.
thank you for the heated vest tip! Dave you are too much! :))) Terry that triumph is a beauty! and i see you are getting ready for your bicycle tour...;)

Now I'm all motivated to take my WM20 out for a run.
Great video, I really appreciate the effort that went into this trip, and the filming and time to edit on top of it. But, don't you have faith in the matchless to do that journey? Haha
What a great way to celebrate the memory of our brave airmen who fought for our freedom great effort lads and lass my respect cheers Witty
Wow very cool
Excellent video! Thanks for making it.
love to hear your long term review no that you have done a few trips with the rack. Can you also share approximate dimensions
It’s still working well thanks. Longest trip I did with it was about 1200 miles and it really came into its own. The unit is 50cm long and the width is 30cm tapering down to 23cm towards the front
Can we see the out-takes and bloopers reel please?
Not before the watershed Dave
enjoyed the sounds and your commentary.
Thanks Terry, all your videos are useful and interesting. I have just bought a G3L so its handy for me to see 'how to' videos on it. Checked the bike over before riding including the chaincase level. It looks like a new primary chain and is nicely lubricated but needed topping up. Which I did and it dumped the lot over night onto its drip tray underneath! I will be taking off the cover to check the rubber! thanks again.
Glad they're helpful Steve. Good luck with the chaincase seal - they are a bit fiddly
Hi Terry. Great video any chance on doing a video on leaking fuel taps hoping for some hints and tips on the cork.
Great idea! I’ll see if I’ve got a spare I can make a video with
But in the meantime: assemble dry so the cork can be pushed in without too much effort then put the assembled tap in a jam jar full of petrol and in the closed position for at least 24 hours. The cork will swell up and it should come out leakproof
Wonderful how to Terry. De coking every 2k miles seems a lot of work. Is there not a simpler way of preventing the build up of carbon?
It does seem excessive. I’ve leaned off the mixture as much as possible, cleaned out the oil sludge and change the oil every 2000 miles. The valves and guides are all within spec. If the carbon build up occurs again then I think it’ll indicate a problem with the rings or a scratch in the barrel allowing oil to flow up from the crankcase. Only time will tell but she’s running well at the moment
Bearing number please
Don’t know the number but dimensions for gear main shaft bearing are: ID 1 9/32, inch, OD 63mm, width 16mm. If you give Steve Siurbey a call at AMC Classic Spares he’ll make sure you get the correct bearing
Thanks for great video Terry.I am struggling with similar issues on 1950 AJS.This will save my sanity.
Thanks for a look around the show. We usually visit this and the other shows mainly to film for our own UA-cam channel, but taking a break from this one.
Great video Terry. We need more members promoting the club through UA-cam and social media.
The reason the pawl doesn't go in a slot is because having the selector shaft '0' at 9 o'clock is a 'false neutral' position, between 2nd & 3rd if I recall correctly. My Ariel boxes are very similar.
Excellent video Terry, well done. I run an Ariel W/NG as a daily bike and your video hits all the right notes.
Great video!
Well filmed spud. A near-cinematic experience these days :)
