Out of Danger Project
Philippines
Приєднався 8 січ 2021
A channel for documenting our experiences and projects in the Sablan farm and our day to day life. We believe this farm serves as encouragement to others to convert farmland from more traditional crops to raising native trees in sustainable ways. See our Patreon page below for details.
Acquired in 2017, we have a vision of planting an eight ha. farm with the intent of harvesting a portion of the trees while leaving trees on the other portion to grow indefinitely as a native forest:
To help preserve species of native Philippine trees
To reforest previously-cleared areas with native, vulnerable, and threatened trees
To model how raising native Philippine trees can lead to profitable farming operations
To provide information on species which are not commonly grown for income
To create a source of rare native Philippine trees
To sequester carbon in the form of a useful, valuable, and natural material
Celeste is from Baguio, PH. while Paul is from Nebraska, USA.

So nice...share some seeds!!
Thanks! One of our goals is to work with DENR to provide free seeds/seedlings once we have a steady supply. Thank you for watching!
Thank you for your passionate crusade in Phillipine endemic tree cultivation. Mother Nature will thank you for that.
Thank you!
Bro where did u get the seeds
These were just sourced from a tree after a storm
hi, did you get your seedlings from DENR?
Hello, we have some seedlings from DENR, but others we have from other nurseries. Thank you for watching!
Where to buy the agoho seedlings?
Hello! I'm sorry - I'm not sure who is selling these seedlings, but the tree is fairly common. If you are in the Philippines, You could check in the facebook group, Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts. They could hopefully point you to a reputable seller near you.
Nice update. Good job
Thank you!
Most locals don't apply for permits because they think they will have to pay bribes to get the permit.
Love the first young Narra you comment on with its scale-like bark-also reminds me of an artist's collage. Then it grows to become an old man with long whiskers / beards. :) The Benguet Pine is another favorite of mine!
Thanks!!!
sir/mam, what is the distance/gap between trees?
Hello! It ranges from 3mx3m up to about 5m distance. We staggered the placement in the trees from one row to the next too so there is a little more space between them. Thank you for watching!
@ Thank You sir. that’s better if the tree is not for commercial so it can grow bigger. i’m preparing also a 12hec land for Native trees and Fruit Bearing trees. Thank You for the info sir🤝
@@gary5149 Nice!!! Let us know how it goes!
Very nice Farm, good job👍❤️, subscribe done
Thank you! And thank you for subscribing!
Try White Lauan fast growing 5years ready to harvest and others like the most expensive Lapnisan (Agar woord), arguably the hardest Magkono (Philippine Iron wood) or Balayong ( Palawan Cherry blossoms)
Thank you! I didn't show them in this video, but we have some younger White Lauan and Magkono you can see in other videos of ours. We'll look into the other species. Thanks again!
You should consider planting paho (mangifera altissima, a native wild mango with tiny mango fruit) and lanzones (Lansium domesticum) to attract a lot of birds. Colasisi (Hanging parrots) and hornbills especially love the paho tree.
Thanks for the suggestions! We have some lanzones planted. We'll look into the magnifera altissima. Thank you!
To solve some insecticide cost problems, it's best to plant a few Neem Trees. Harvest the fruits and/or leaves and blend them to make a juice mixture to spray on the trees. Ideally, you can extract the oils, but that will need a small distiller. Some DIY distillery can do and there are lots on UA-cam.
Thanks! We'll look into that
woww! im so happy to see all those trees grow so fast, i remember the day when i first discover your channel you just started to plant those trees. now they do their part to help balance our ecosystem. thanks for the love of the Nature both of you husband and wife.
Thank you!
At 15:05, I don't think that's a Molave. I have many and the bark is different. Molave bark is rough grainy and leathery. At 24:30, I don't think that's Molave either. Molave has a rough, vertically oriented bark. It has a sort of corrugated bark. I don't know what those trees are. Maybe there are different kinds of Molave.
We'll have to check those closer - thanks!
Did you pick the saba in @19:49 ?
It was unfortunately pretty damaged. Most of the saba and banana plants are on the sides of the hills and are ok, but the wind was rough on the ones on the top of the hill and I think those had been on the ground for some time.
Is it true that the rainbow eucalyptus keep blooming the whole year?
I think here they tend to flower only at certain times, but I'm not 100% sure about that - most of the trees that I have access to are so tall I don't notice the flowers, so I could be wrong
@outofdangerproject thanks
I've got a unique seedling if your interested. I've got some Baobab seedlings. They are about 2 years old & about 3-3.5 ft tall. I'm here in Mandaluyong.
I've always thought those sounded like interesting trees - we'll research them a little
You may wanna use Gibarelic Acid to improve and speed up growth. They sell some online in pure form or tablets. Each tablet is enough for one 16L knapsack sprayer. Ideally sprayed under leaves and during either early morning or night as it is applied through foliar methods. Another thing is before you planted the seedling, coating the root ball with Microryza for plants to improve its root system more. As a strong root system is better for the plant.
Thank you! I'll look into the Gibarelic acid - that sounds like an interesting way to help plants grow. We've been using products from UPLB for mycorrhizal inoculation like mykovam and mycogroe. If we had more seedlings it would be interesting to try to do some with and some without inocculation to see it it affects them in the long term. Thank you for watching our videos!
@@outofdangerproject Do in mind to research it well as there are different forms of concentrations being sold and the usage of each of those. Also, the time and ideal application and I noticed some research showed that some plants develope a tolerance from it overtime. Still, is is a very helpful and potent plant improver.
Mahogany not endemic in the Philippines and destroyed the composition of soil in long term other trees nearby die.
Thank you for your comment and for watching.
Saan banda po ito sir mam
Hello, this is in Baguio. Thank you for watching!
Kindly do an update on the trees if you were affected by the typhoon kristine? If they were damaged
Hello and thank you for your concern. I'm planning to do a new video soon. If everything goes as planned, we should go there in the next few days
@@outofdangerproject thank you 😊 looking forward of that video ❤
@@hwangmiyeon1001 we were able to put up a new just now. Luckily there wasn't too much damage - some broken branches and leaning trees. Thank you for watching!

Interesting! I've seen those on the road nearby. Thank you!
you should plant Citrus micrantha, a wild citrus species native to visayas and mindanao (yes, species! not a mere cultivar)
Thanks for the tip! We'll look into that species
How can you best eradicate the tree? They are taking over the forest.
I haven't personally tried removing any, but I think I came across some guides online that might be a good place to start research on that. I know they have active removal programs in Australia. Thank you for watching!
Hi. Isn’t it red sandalwood?
I think that's a closely-related species. This one is Pterocarpus indicus and if the red sandalwood is what I'm thinking of, it's Pterocarpus santalinus. So they are in the same genus, but not quite the same. I'm not sure if red sandalwood would also cause the water to change colors in a similar manner, but it could be interesting to see if it has a similar effect. Thank you for watching our videos!
No roosters. Wow. Where?
There are some around here, and actually some wild ones in the forest, but they weren't crowing at this time, at least. Thank you again for watching!
Are you in Cebu somewhere?
Hello! This is in Sablan, Benguet. Thank you for watching our videos!

love your vlogg, but I hope you show us the leaves, so you can educate us, thank u
Thank you for the feedback - we'll try to include more close up images in the future. Thank you for watching!
Beautiful tree. Looks healthy.
Thank you!!
It’s nice planting dipterocarp species because they are a nesting tree of the Philippine eagle, which the only last places where it’s thriving is from what I know luzon and mindanao
Creating habitat is probably one of the best ways to help wildlife. I'm not sure if the Philippine Eagle was ever in the area we are at now in Luzon, but we have planted quite a few dipterocarps - I'm hoping to do an update on more species that we have soon. Thank you for watching and commenting!
I also created a mini forest in my area though im not in the Philippines, i just organized and bought the seedlings of native trees. Using the Miyawaki Method of tree planting. I started 3 years ago. And also planted around 100 balete trees. Located in Sindangan Zambo north. More power to all of us, Eco warriors
Nice! That's great you're planting native trees - keep it up! Thank you for watching and commenting!
Nice 👍
thank you so much! John Locke mentions this in An Essay on Humane Understanding ... I had no idea! no wonder it was given to royalty (says Wikipedia), and no wonder Aztecs worshipped the sun, when ordinary man-made fire has not enough UV to cause the fluorescence (I suppose)
Thank you! It really does look amazing. Thank you for watching!
How old are the magkono until they started flowering? Ive started collecting the 5 Xanthostemon species and currently, I have the magkono and mapilig so far.
Nice! This one is 2 years old now, so it flowered after it's first year. I've heard it's common to have them flower early. I'm not sure if this one is from a seed or cutting - that might make a difference too. That will be a nice group of trees when you have your collection complete - I'd like to grow the other species too. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@outofdangerproject thanks Paul. I can't wait until my magkono starts flowering. It's more than 2 yrs old. I may not see them grow to their potential height but happy to have all 5 of them in one area.
I’ve guess you’re the only one person who has magkono tree in that place. It’s good to see them in that kind of high altitude environment. Good job.
Thank you! I'm not sure if there are others nearby - I haven't seen any that I recognize, but they seem to do well so far. Thank you for watching!
Yup, finally a new video. May God bless you for being a good steward of His creations. Jesus loves you!
Thanks! I know we haven't put much out recently, but, depending on how this storm plays out, hopefully we can make a 3-year update for our trees soon, as well as what we've planted this season.
hey bud. just bought a farm in the philippines just wondering what can u recommend a fast growing trees in the philippines? main purpose is for privacy fence. tia
That's exciting! Based on my limited experience: There are several fast growing species, but most that I know of will grow tall quickly and will not have too many lower branches after a couple of years so they might not be the best in terms of long-term privacy assuming you are trimming around the trunks. Of species that are readily available, narra is fast-growing, and it has an advantage of being able to grow from large cuttings, so some people will make instant living fences by planting large branches of narra directly in the ground. I've read that they have a greater tendency for heart rot when they are planted from cuttings, though. Other fast growers we have experience with are amugis and kalantas. So far, our fastest-grower is rainbow eucalyptus. All of those species tend to grow up fast enough without many lower branches that you might not have too much privacy when they are tall, so you could consider another row of smaller trees - maybe some ornamentals like bagawak morado and mangkono could be nice. If your fence has several rows of trees and you just let nature take over after the taller trees have some height you would probably have plenty of shorter volunteer plants and trees that would provide privacy relatively quickly. One suggestion I would have before you select the species is to join the Philippine Native Tree Enthusiasts facebook group - they have nice lists of windbreak trees that could be considered, and you could ask their advice as well - they have many helpful experts who know a lot more than me and have much more experience. One last thing to note - I don't know if this is true, but I've heard people say that there are some rules (these might not be nationwide) that limit how closely you can plant a tree to a property line, so that might be something to consider as well. I hope that gives you a starting point for your research in terms of the species. All the best with your new farm!
hi hottie
Maybe you can try planting some Ice cream beans (Inga) - nitrogen fixing, fast-growing and fruit producing at the same time.
Thanks! We'll look into those
Great videos! I have one at home and have had it for 2 years. How long until it gets it’s colors?😊
Thanks! Most have shown a nice the lime green when the bark peeled within the first year. This one is starting to have reddish/maroon bark at some stages of the bark aging, but I'm still waiting for the bright red I see in some of the trees nearby. I'll try to update this one in February again if not sooner. This one has already grown close to another couple of meters since the last video. Thank you for watching!
@@outofdangerproject thank you for answering so fast! I have mine in a pot, grown as a bonsai, it’s about 50cm tall. The bright green is almost gone and is now brown/orange and a little bit rougher than the smooth green. I haven’t seen any of them with rainbow colors I a pot, really hope mine does soon!😊

Strange enough we have them especially in the gully areas and sp far we haven't seen or heard of any bee kills due to this tree. Actually what we call Bumble bees seem to be quite fond of these trees
That's interesting - maybe there are some insects adapted to it. Thank you for watching!
@@outofdangerproject yep, just maybe another one of life's mysteries
Sorry if this sounds like a weird comment, but do you and others who live with you help locals? Why I ask is because many white UA-camrs who live in poorer countries tend to exploit and colonise local people. I see it too much on here unfortunately.
We have a hive up in a tree. And we need to remove bees. Howndo we go about it?
Hello! I'm not sure about that - is there a beekeeper in your area who could advise you? There might be a group on facebook with experts who could give advise too.
You also might be able to check with the DENR to see if they have a recommendation
Ever considered the miyawaki method
That sound interesting - we thought about it along the borders of the property. It seems like it would be expensive, though to plant so many trees in a small area. Maybe when our trees start making seed it will be something we can try
@@outofdangerproject native trees are free from your local CENRO
@@Jack-p7i2r Thanks! We got a couple of trees from them, but mostly here they have pine and we wanted a variety of trees. We're hoping we can work with them in the future to provide seeds for other species
