Always done this off the charger, just connecting two batteries together in parallel (pay attention, not in series shorting them). It is slightly surprising that it can work directly on the charger, with its supposedly independently controlled battery slots. I'd even think it may damage some chargers, as it could be interpreted as putting a way overcharged battery in some slot (essentially the charging voltage provided by one slot, which may be way way higher than 1.5v for a battery with high impedance, would be seen as a slotted battery in another slot).

didn't you say you needed 50 feet of hose between the compressor and the filter to allow the air to cool? yet you mounted it right behind your compressor??? Hmmmmm, Either its Okie or you've got 50' of compressor hose coiled up on the floor... Which is Okie as well...

Thanks, I'd read elsewhere that using a charged battery and the null battery in the charger with a short *when the charger was off* would work. It did not. This did work in a couple of seconds!

Just worked for me too, we have an 8 bank recharger for AA and AAA. Our recharger doesn't indicate a digital readout during charging, just the battery icon with a progress meter. For the 'nulls', this recharger simply has no icon. The deeply discharged makes sense as these batteries are used in sets of 3 to shine a light based on motion in dark, night time hallways. No telling how many weeks the batteries weren't actually completely dead, but using every last mah until our lazy butts got around to getting the lights back in working order.
