You Don't Have to Give Your Students Feedback (Live Q&A)
The first combat learning live Q&A! We discuss…
- How you don’t have to intervene during training and you don’t have to generate feedback for students if it’s not necessary.
- The power of external instructions, especially with young children acquiring movement skills.
- CLA for coaching poomsae and kata.
- Differential learning
- Overcorrecting and junk coaching.
…and more!
I’m going to do more live Q&A sessions. If you have a question you want answered, comment here, on Instagram, send messages on either platform, or in the Substack chat. I’ll address them on the next Q&A.
See you there!

    I misspoke a bit here. It’s more likely tibial external rotation rather than internal rotation during a triangle. Other than that, find something jiu-jitsu related that doesn’t bother your symptoms and continue to train that while you heal!

  • @combatathletephysio
    @combatathletephysio 29 днів тому

    Thanks for having me on. Great discussion! A couple of corrections on a few of my misspeaks: 1.) When taking about the LCL injury example I said “strain” instead of “sprain”. We sprain ligaments and strain muscles. 2.) In the triangle example I said tibial internal rotation and the tibia is in external rotation during that movement. And no shade to the jiu-jitsu guys. I’m just another knuckle dragger that likes to roll around as well!

    His semantic arguments are like those old infomercials that try and make it seem like a normal hammer is super hard to use and so you need to buy their new and improved super hammer. "side control" also called "side mount" by some just means controlling a person while off to their side. Back control means controlling from the back and mount or full mount means controlling them from the top. There are then many many variations of each of those. I like constrants lead approach but I hate this guys overly verbose terminology. Speaking as someone who career is just using words, audience appreciate complex topics told to them using simple and colloquial words.

    After hearing this idea about elo rating im trying my best to come up with a elo rating system 🤔 gonna keep you updated

  • @Bradley9967
    @Bradley9967 4 місяці тому

    There's a potential problem with allowing students to gravitate to these attractors. 1 Students may become less meta stable, which is to say they won't develop other areas. 2 They could develop something like a 'bridge and roll' which won't work on a higher level. So is this ecological if all of a sudden they are in an environment where this doesn't work. Another example of this is not allowing ankle locks then later at brown belt they have to redevelope their game. Regarding the rating system I've been thinking this for sometime. This could allow all belts to compete in the same competition. This would be particularly useful to allow high white belts to compete with lower blue belts.

    • @combatlearning
      @combatlearning 4 місяці тому

      Maladaptive tactics will dissipate eventually when they stop working. It's not a problem. One of the major purposes of CLA is to keep attractors from getting too deep into a rut that you become maladaptive. If an athlete gets stuck too long, the coach steps in. You cannot skip "elo" steps no matter what anyone says.

BJJ does not seem "easy" to do it for, but it seems more straight forward to create safe games for because BJJ seems pretty safe to train compared to strike sparring. I moved everything outside of poomsae to a rotating curriculum about six years ago and haven’t looked back. It also keeps the classes from feeling too repetitive while at the same time ensuring students get the material they need to move through the belts. Good stuff!

      @@joshpck Many things are gamified. So students will be doing their techniques inside of some sort of live drill. Just as an example, he may have one person practice attacking with anything they want while the other person is working on moving out of the way and countering with a front leg roundhouse. Another common one he has used to practice the cut kick is having the defensive student stand on one leg and hop around with the option of cut kicking while the other tries to get past their leg and hit them with a clapper paddle. Even if they are just doing target work, it’s always from movement, never static. So the person holding the target is moving around the ring with them as though they are sparring. I also recall one student having a hard time turning his hip over with a roundhouse. Our coach actually put on a white t-shirt and painted the student’s foot and told him he wanted a full foot print on the shirt each time the student kicked.
