How can seperate the cotton seeds from that soft cotton seperate
@@kailashashtankar9643 this is wool spinning. Cotton seeds can be picked or separated from cotton by hand or a mill. The video is wool though.
So very interesting! I just got an antique great wheel and now I'd like to find a wheel boy to add to my spinning collection... and possibly use, since I'm at 5'4" 😊
What am I doing wrong when the twisted yarn starts knotting up? Love your site, just found it. Thank you!
@@miryamnae2164 if it’s knotting, a couple of different thoughts. 1. You are over twisting before winding on. 2. Or maybe not drafting enough before winding on. Watch lots of videos and practice. You’ll get it.
Loving this so much with the great wheel spinning, the cannons going off in the background, and the lovely music giving the soundtrack!
@@mother2midwife it’s like a bit of heaven listening to live bluegrass while spinning.
Thank you! Thank you!
@@mother2midwife you’re most welcome
Excellent
Thanks
I’m so delighted to be seeing new videos from you. I can watch and listen to you all day, you have such a gentle manner and “visit” in such a natural way. 💖 Cindi-Rae Norejko
Thank you
Thank you for the wonderful lesson - your videos have been so helpful in teaching me how to spin on my great wheel
My pleasure ❤
Fantastic! Thank you so much for all your great wheel videos.
You’re very welcome. My pleasure
I'm watching this series of three again too.
Watching this one again!
Great video! Very helpful. I just got my first walking wheel and my drive band kept slipping off. Thank you for educating me!!
Enjoy the spin. Once tuned up practice 15 minutes a day. You’ll find the joy
Yes- tips that I haven't seen on other videos! Thank You :)
Thank you, I just purchased my first CPW and have yet to use it!
They’re a fun fast wheel. Enjoy
Appreciate the "drop and wind on" demo versus over-the-head triangle! As an Occupational Therapist, this is much more ergonomic and so much healthier for the shoulder! Thank you!
It just seems more natural and logical. Our ancestors surely didn’t do the overhead wind on with the daily work life they experienced. Thank you.
Great idea - have 3 great wheels that could use an upgrade like this - thanks!
What if you need to ply counter clockwise?
By loosening the driveband and twisting driveband into a figure 8, it reverses the direction of the spindle as if counter clockwise. The spinner continues to spin clockwise using muscle memory. Otherwise, if you leave the driveband in normal position you may spin counterclockwise. Either will work. Happy spinning
I’m loving your tips for great wheel spinning! I have a beautiful old wheel that Spiritwood has repaired for me. Now I am practicing a little every day and your information is so very helpful. Thank you!
15 minutes a day with a good wheel and it’ll be so much fun. John at Spiritwood is one of the best. Thank you and keep spinning.
Very interesting, again! I've been admiring and reading a bit about great wheels for some time now, but from a distance (Netherlands..) No great wheels available here, sadly. So interesting to know why there are different heights and styles. It didn't cross my mind that they were designed especially to spin cotton or wool. Which is logical if you think about it 🙂
Thanks for your comment. In Europe, you may see a muckle wheel which is somewhat similar
@egaddis5973 Yes, maybe in Scotland. I've been longing to go there for a long time. Will be hard to find though, but who knows! A bigger house would be necessary ;-) Love your (too) small wheel!
Interesting! Never heard of a Wheel Boy. If it were meant for an elderly person so she could sit on a chair she would still have to get up to walk to the wheel to wind the yarn on the spindle etc.. Or am I forgetting something?
A person can sit by the hub and wind on particularly if a short table. Video on my channel.

@egaddis5973 Ah, of course! Seen it, 👍
Very interesting! Thanks!
Am a docent at a small town's historical museum. We were gifted a Great Wheel. While in college (art major) I did lots of 4-shed weaving...the spinners were grad students and we did not learn to spin... SO: I needed exactly what you have shown here so that I can somewhat generally explain the spinning process... Visitors WILL ASK ! (and yes, I will recheck the parts and see if I can demo some spinning. There is a spindle there...but am away from the wheel so I don't recall whether a mother-of-all and maidens are there...)
If you need any help please reach out or email Most happy to help.
Just wow!
Such lovely wheels. I would love to have a walking wheel someday!
Thank you for the tour, Val. It's very helpful to see these in action.
Glad to help
My original had copper lining. I need to replace. Thanks for the video!
I love that we can see your face reflected in the sheet of brass as you talk.
Good job Valerie! Where did you find the long DPNs? I had considered learning to knit with a belt at some point in time, but I couldn't find long DPNs. Unsupported flicking is just too demanding for my carpal tunnel. Over time, I taught myself to knit continental instead, and it works really well for me for now, but it is not ideal for stranded knitting. I would love to try knitting with a belt, so I could hold my strand in each hand.
Addi and prym make some. Check Etsy and search for 40 cm instead of inches. Thanks. Hope it works for you.
Since you know English and continental styles, have you tried two-handed stranded knitting? That's what I do and it works for me. Each hand carries one of the colors. I'm a continental knitting mostly, but I also learned the English flicking style. I tried carrying 2 colors on the left hand (continental), but I like the two-handed method a lot better. Good luck!
@@cyndylee544 Yes, I did try. However, my tension is loose in continental, and tight in English style. This creates a completely different problem. I don't let this deter me from stranded knitting, I just put with the awkwardness of having two yarns on the left. Someday, I will get those long DPNs and I will master English style 🙂
I see people bending to the right or stooping as they turn the wheel to keep their hand on the same spoke. It is no great feat of coordination to simply move your right hand to another spoke without any break in the rotation of the wheel. A stick has to be gripped but it only takes a relaxed, open hand to push a spoke and a gentle grasp to stop the rotation. In more than forty years of spinning, I never had any use for a stick.
I’m exploring different reasons why they might have used the wool finger. It is rather curious. Look for more on the wool finger as I experiment. Thanks for commenting
I used leather. I cut down a .44-40 brass case and drilled out the primer pocket then I wrapped the spindle shaft with acrylic yarn and pushed it into the brass case and oiled the yarn. On my wheel the spindle is smaller diameter and shorter (Probably a cotton spindle) and this improvised bearing on the nigh side works well.
Very ingenious. Well done
I found a great wheel at a local Restore. How would I go about researching the history behind it? Do you recommend any particular resources for researching? I can tell it’s really old, possibly 1800s but I don’t know how to tell the age of it.
Two resources to check out online: Ravelry-a free internet resource and then join spindle wheel group. On Facebook, antique spinning wheels group or Fiber Equipment, Great Wheels group. Either one is great.

Metal skewers? Cool! I made a tensioner lazy Kate from an old wooden drawer and some stainless steel rods and white 7/8c rubber bumpers for stoppers.
Very interesting
Thank you for calling this a Quebec wheel. In Canada Quebec is a beautifully distinct province . It’s almost incorrect that these wheels got named CPWs when they more rightly should have been QPWs
This is great information. Someone on a Facebook group I am on posted photos of a CPW with a misaligned wheel. The two posts look are almost identical, and at first I thought maybe one of them was a replacement part, but then both wheel posts were shimmed and glued, so it totally makes sense that if they are not positioned properly, the posts would sit incorrectly and skew the position of the wheel. Thank you so much, I will relay the info.
Glad it helps.
Lovely wheel spokes!
Clever fix.

Wow Val, those do purr! Lovely
Before lube. They’ve quieted a lot with good lube. Fast and easy spin.
Great idea, but when you're doing living history - these ppl will disallow anything new - I took a great wheel I got out and used something from a hardware store that was just going to be temporary until I could do it right and it was pointed out to me - I really do think that some of these groups are shooting themselves in the foot with everything wanting to be so historically correct? Rather than really teach the public of what it is, how it was used so they can understand the way things were done........even like how old is your great wheel ? I can give you an idea, but I have no dates????? Really????
If you find a bushing that has an inside diameter too small you can take a drill and drill it out to a larger opening. A drilled out dowel and cut to fit between the leathers might work fine too and a good soak for a few days in hot oil to impregnate the wood with oil for built in lubrication. Bone would work too. Bone is hollow so a small bone could be cleaned out and used or just make a wedge with a curved space to hold the shaft while under tension. Lots of things can be used for this purpose.
Like the bone idea! Thanks
