An EF86 Tube Overdrive Pedal? The AMPSAMPS PREF86!
Hello! Thank you for checking out my video demo of the AMPSAMPS PREF86!
The PREF86 is a hardwired tube overdrive pedal that features an EF86 preamp tube, running at high voltage courtesy of a Hammond power transformer inside the pedal. The pedal runs on 120 volts via a fused IEC socket mounted at the top of the pedal. The controls are straight forward: Volume and Tone. True bypass foot switching, with Switchcraft jacks, Alpha pots, and Gorva switches for on/off, ground lift and bypass/run. The white LED indicates that the pedal is on, and the orange LED indicates the effect is engaged.
The PREF86 was inspired by my love for the EF86 tube. Filmosound 8399s, a Premier B-160, the EF86 channel of my Vox AC30 Heritage Handwired amp. It was evident that there was something magical about the pentode preamp tube that the guitar signal encounters first upon entering the amp. I designed the PREF86 based on the Vox AC4 circuit. All the clarity and detailed information from when your fingers or pick touches the strings of your instrument are captured, and as the EF86 has more gain on tap than the 5879, you can really hit the front end of your amp hard! The EF86 was discontinued from the AC30s due to microphonics, but in a pedal format, those issues are mitigated by distance and can be leveraged into unique character and additional expressiveness, giving your tone a little something extra.
Each pedal is hand made by me in my basement in Salem Oregon.

FENDER RAMPARTE: TOTAL REBUILD!
Переглядів 6521 день тому
Hi All - Thanks for checking out my video featuring this Fender Ramparte rebuild that I did. The amp came to me from a local customer who was having issues with it. The circuit board was pretty toasty, and the customer opted to have me wire up a new circuit from scratch inside. I went with the 5F2 Tweed Princeton circuit, with a few notable tweaks to the front end to get it into the Supro/Valco...

Heres a look at the AMPSAMPS PRE-Q! Following the PREF86 & PRE85, this all-tube overdrive pedal/preamp also features a pentode 5879 front end (Filmosound 385/Gibson GA-40) into the Ampeg V series (V2/VT40) sweepable midrange circuit and inductor. You get volume/drive, the 3 switchable settings as featured in the original Ampeg circuit (300/1k/3k hz) with the midrange control that boosts and cut...

Hello! Thank you for checking out my UA-cam channel. If you like gear demos and supporting DIY small biz builders, hit that subscribe button and leave a comment. Many thanks! In this video I'm demoing a completely rebuilt 385, done to the 8399/Canadian EL84s EF86 Filmosound circuit. NEXT, the "8399 to EL84 EF86" 385. First off, there are so many model numbers... but where this differs from the ...
EDIQUIP SHOOTOUT! 1027 Tube Unit vs. 1027A Solid State Tape Reader Amp
Переглядів 80Місяць тому
Hello! In this video I'm doing a shootout between my Ediquip 1027 & 1027A tape reader amps. The 1027 (grey front) is a tube unit that features the same circuit & chassis as the Moviola URS amplifier, but has the same layout as the 1027A solid state model. As I understand it, these little "squawk box" amps were used to monitor the audio from the dailies on motion picture shoots back in the 50s a...
AMPSAMPS MODEL 1: SCUMBACKS vs ALNICO BLUES vs PULSONIC GREENBACKS!
Переглядів 110Місяць тому
Hello! In this video I’m blasting the AMPSAMPS Model 1 through three different cabs: A 4x12 loaded with Scumbacks, a 2x12 loaded with Celestion Alnico Blues, and a 4x12 loaded with vintage Celestion Greenbacks with Pulsonic cones. I don’t think I could pick a favorite… maybe the 2x12 with Alnico Blues? Probably the closest to getting that Stooges’ Raw Power sound. The Model 1 is a 15w amp, so y...
High-Voltage Tube Pedal vs. Solid State Peavey Decade Amp! DEMOS FROM THE BASEMENT
Переглядів 155Місяць тому
In this video, we see what these tube pedals do against solid state amps! At this point, the Peavey Decade needs no introduction; the AMPSAMPS PRE85 is a tube overdrive pedal that features a 5879 pentode tube and is based on the Filmosound 385 preamp. I tried to show examples of rhythm & leads, neck (PAF) and bridge (tele single coil), cranked and clean operation of the Decade, cranked and clea...

Hello! Thanks for checking out my channel. This is a video demo for the PRE85 tube overdrive pedal. The PRE85 is my second tube preamp pedal, following the PREF86. Since the 5879 is a pentode, it also works well at the end of a signal c...

DEMOS FROM THE BASEMENT: AMPSAMPS MODEL 1 vs WEM DOMINATOR Mk II

Hello! Thanks for checking out the AMPSAMPS UA-cam channel. I finally get a WEM Dominator in the shop. Many thanks to Mike in PDX for bringing it by. It’s the first I’ve actually been able to play, of the few I’ve even seen in person. This Dominator got the full service as well as a new output transformer courtesy of @bryansours as the old one was bad. The back story for me on the Model 1 is Jo...
DEMOS FROM THE BASEMENT: Bell & Howell Filmosound 202 to 8399 conversion.
Переглядів 713 місяці тому
This is a demo of a Bell & Howell Filmosound 202 to 8399 conversion that I did for a customer. The customer sent me the Filmosound 202 in an ammo can, which I removed and can be seen at the beginning of the clip. The amp sounded fairly decent, but was a little dark, and right after I was done shooting the “before clip”, it crapped out. Stock, Filmosounds are rat nests inside. Many folks will op...

Hello! Thanks for checking out the AMPSAMPS UA-cam channel. This video features my four watt WT4 amplifier. The WT4 is a Class A single-ended amp that features a single EL84 in the power section and a 12AX7 preamp. Single volume control, high and low impedance inputs, speaker and line out jacks. The inspiration for this amp was the Moviola URS & Ediquip 1027a squawk box amps. The Moviolas are a...

Do you have a website?
I do! www.ampsamps.com
Wow that sounds great! Would you be willing to share a schematic..?
Thanks man! Circuit is based on the widely available Vox AC4 EF86 schematic 👍
I've just recently got mine back from being "sorted out" and it sounds nothing like this!. Mine is the EL84 version I'm lucky if I can move the volume past 11 o'clock, It's punishingly loud and clean, zero breakup. I'm at my wits end with it!.
Keiran! Sorry to hear… maybe double check and make sure the preamp tubes are correct (ecc83/12ax7)?
@mr.ampsamps I've put in a full set of '63 Mullards from an Elpico AC-88, both ecc83's and two el84's to no avail. The whole reason to send in the amp was to get an overdrive/saturated sound by getting the full range of the volume control but I can barely get past 10-11. I've got a wee Moviola 1027a that absolutely crushes it in terms of tone, it's crazy!.
Killer reverb!!!! Nice to get it integral instead of a pedal.
Yeah man! Agreed 👊⚡️
sounding good. I’m interested in your amps and may get one, would you consider spending a little more demo time on the “edge of breakup” tones for your British/ Vox like builds? Keep up the good work!
For sure! Feel free to hit me up directly and I can get you some clips. Thanks for the shout.
Sounds great man
Thanks!
Go out and find a used Jazzkat Amp ..test that
🔥🔥🔥🔥!
That’s awesome! Congrats!
Nice demo ! This past week , I picked up a B & H " Film - O - Sound " projector , with an audio amp in the bottom , from a local thrift store . I paid a little less than $ 5. !! It's a military model . Should work nicely with some various vintage Jensen speakers I've sourced from local flea markets . You folks keep looking , this stuff can STILL be found out there !!
Hell yeah! Love it man. “Money is like the wind… you only feel it when it’s moving.”
Making those greenbacks flap
Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner!
Yeah! I think you might have the first Model 1 I ever did…
@@mr.ampsamps i’d be coming in too late on bitcoin so..
@@mr.ampsamps it would look great on camera though, ive got a mojotone 2x12 w a wgs patriot and a reaper that can run either series, parallel, or solo. Sounded like you switched to the neck pickup for a bit. Whoever said money is the root of all evil has probably not plugged into 4 pulsonic greenbacks.. btw i can crank a single coil on that or the moviola conversion with little to no ground hum whatsoever
Sounds awesome!
Thanks man!
Great overdrive sound.
Thank you! Will have another one ready to go here in the next week or so if you’re in the market. Hmu 🤙
Sounds great
Thank you!
Blown away with your creations!. I've got a '64 WEM Mersey Super 15 which is basically a Mk2 Dominator with a new suit with an alnico 10in Elac. Gotta get one of yours mucker!. Peace.
Thanks Keiran! Any time!
Gran sonido salvaje
Gracias amigo!
That’s right. Guitar straight in! Thx
Love it - straight into the amp, no fx?
💯
The cab is dreamy! Original speaker?
Thanks! Speaker is a vintage 8” Rola alnico from an old Hammond M-100 organ
@@mr.ampsamps Those whizzer cone ones are good! Heppner alnico 8 inchers too
Thank you!
sounds amazing
That's a sweet piece of gear!. Dig the crystalline overdrive that EF86 is kicking out, lovin' it.
Keiran! Thanks for the shout. 👊⚡️
@mr.ampsamps That WT4 in the ammo can sounds phenomenal too btw!.
@@keiranbradley3238 thank you!
This is rad!
I’m curious, how does the original circuit totally compare with a rebuilt one? Your amp sounds great. I have a stock 179, however I do not have a plug for it. I’ve been considering converting it. I’m not sure if I should just re-cap it or gut it all together. What’s been your experience? Cheers!
😊 awesome 😎
Thank you! I have one like it for sale if interested ⚡️👊
Sounds cool. Did you do it yourself?
You refurbish the 185 models?
I do not. Feel free to send a pic, but generally, filmos with the power switch between the volume and tone aren’t what you’re after. Still some good parts there, but not what I do my thing with.
They still make replacement tubes for these?
They do!
Sounds excellent!. I'm still waiting on the 385 getting sorted at Horseman, I managed to find a genuinely rare old British amp a couple of days ago, the guy I bought it from has a video of it on here if you have time to have a look/listen?. Look for "1957 Cresta amp" you will find it. It's got the sound!.
Thx Bud! Will check out the Cresta... never heard of that. Hope all is well!
Is this now these sound "unmolested" ?. It's hard to imagine nobody discovered the glories of these before Bernie up in the wild white north!. I'm sure it's about to be spruced up in your hands/shop and get the cobwebs blown off.
The riffs he's playing? Sound as nostalgic as the gear looks 😏🤭
sounds great. is it just the guitar or with pedal?
Tele custom straight in, bridge tele pickup. Thanks!
Beautiful amp would like to see and hear about the makeup of this amp, tubes, circuit basis.
Thanks Ron - Hammond AO-35 chassis, Watkins inspired circuit. EL84s 15w or so. Cathode biased. Single volume and tone.
That's a wee monster!.
Indeed! Thx bud
I see these all the time on the bay for not much scratch!. They got the goods for sure!. Peace Bro.
Thanks man!
Sounds amazing! Wow!
Thanks for uploading this! I just did it and it sounds fantastic! I think I’m going to experiment with a larger tank stored in the cab as well.
Have fun! I’ve done a larger tank too but I think you might run into hum issues with the PT. Running it out onto the floor behind the cab might be cool for eliminating feedback at extreme settings… lmk how it goes if you do!
I'm curious to know what type of phase inverter you used for this amp, long tail pair or para-phase inverter? Beautiful sounding amp!
Ron! Thanks for the kind words. Paraphase 👍
Can you tell me how you hooked up the speaker? I just picked up one of these.
reverb sounds great to me, you should edit in riff from the Rolling Stones , This could be the Last Time. I want one of these amps and one of the stores by me has a really clean one for a little under 1k. i was thinking maybe getting a SurfyBear to plug into it. your work is way over my skill level, i can solder wires but thats about it.
Thank you! If you wind up pulling the trigger, you can send it to me. I see these somewhat often in the $5-700 range on reverb (head only)
Cool amp!❤
Thank you!
"Promo sm"
Very cool!
Thanks! Currently listed on Reverb if interested 👍
Interesting stuff. Thanks!
Amazing mod!! Sounds great. And was that last tune a queens of the Stone Age song?
Thank you! Yeah - Like a Drug from Desert Sessions 5&6
@@williamhines6160 that’s what I thought! What reverb tank did you use? I’m gonna have to do this to mine
Tone machine! Cheers.
Thanks!
Are you selling the fender reverb also?
No, unfortunately it isn’t mine & belongs to a customer
