Restoring a 1977 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser and a 1970 FJ55 in our home shop. This FJ40 build is the first thing we are documenting, but we have also restored a 1967 Chevy C10 and built a homemade teardrop camper.

great work, thanks for the video! For the flywheel bolts ideally you would go ahead and replace with new bolts - it's cheap insurance. In my case I had on broken off in the backside of the engine so had to get new ones anyway. Cheers!
yes, that would have been a good idea. I will do that next time for sure!!!!
That is so beautiful!!
I was talking about the seats year . Everyone call theirs an iron pig now I do not I have always called them the Iron Maiden. I call my fj49 a rolling buck board but I wouldn’t have it any other way have fun !
Whoops I hit the 9 instead of the 0 I’m old and need glasses🤓
No they are out a later model like 74 or 5
nice job i need minds down lol
I should have waited until I drove over those speed bumps before I started filming 😄
Where in GA are you located?
Atlanta
I’m in Cartersville. Found the channel because of the 55. Hated to hear that it’s gone, but I understand the logic. Looked like you stopped at the Buc-ee’s in Calhoun. Thought you might be close by.
@@TheWatchSteward Yes, I used to live in Cartersville. Now I live in the Johns Creek area. Do you have a 55? We have a club here and have a couple guys with 55's. Check out our club page. forum.ih8mud.com/forums/ga-yota.395/

When is the video of jf55
ASAP :)
This car remind me about the movie the mist in 2007 interior was black exterior was red white, and it had top lights grill lights, bumper lights in the front and spotlight on the driver side
Why it took almost 1 year for your FJ40 project to show up in my view. I have no idea. But I love it and have subscribed and saved all of them !
More vids coming soon!!
Good to see a update on the 55, looking forward to seeing more. thanks!
Well... actually I just sold Bucky! It was a sad day, but he is going to a good home. The guy is going to restore and upgrade Bucky with all the goodies I have collected over the last couple of years. I needed some funds to pay some bills and now I can completely focus on the FJ40! Thanks for the encouragement. I might make one more last video saying goodbye to Bucky.
@@DirtDauberGarage Ah okay, disappointing but understandable, I was sort of hoping to see her as a runner minus a full resto, but given the state of the floor, yeah it was going to become quite a project, and as someone who is restoring a HJ60 I know the costs involved in these old vans. looking forward to seeing how the FJ40 comes along, really liked the father/son element to these videos.
The rav interior room is equal to if not greater than 4runners depending on the specific model.
Love the shocking effects!!!
WOW! You are quick!! Thanks!
Don’t go cheap on the death wheel 😂
Haha! I like to live on the edge!!b :)
I'm looking to buy a 71 fj55 out of the Seattle area.hiw hard is it to fix rust holes in the body panels?
It depends on how bad it is, there are tons of videos on UA-cam showing how to do it. Watch a few of them and go for it! You can do it!
Hey! I recently discovered your channel. I have my 40 for 29 years this October. The hand-built hinge receiver you fabbed was really impressive! What size steel did you use for the threaded insert? I have to replace one of mine. I made a shoddy attempt at drilling out one stuck bolt back in the ‘90s lmao. Thanks for your help and inspiration!
I don't remember off the top of my head. I think it was 3/16. I will measure it and get back to you ASAP!
@@DirtDauberGarage awesome, I really appreciate it!!
Good practical advice! I suggest only use an angle grinder with a trigger or paddle only. I’m a ‘77 40 owner too.
you put the shock upper eyes on first, then jack up the axle to line up the bottom eyes. 😎
Thank you!
@@DirtDauberGarage you’re welcome 😉 I love all the work you’ve put in, and with your son how awesome. Thank you for taking the time and sharing all this!
Are there any other bolts on the cruiser you should scrub that well with brake clean? And and you’re putting net some thread lock on these? Doing an engine rebuild and Reinstlal and trying to figure out which bolts I’ll need to do this for
I would clean all the bolts really well and toque them back to what the factory manual torque recommendations are, but I believe the only ones that need thread locker are the fly wheel and maybe the timing gear set. Here is a link to some of the torque specs. forum.ih8mud.com/threads/misc-torque-specs-use-at-your-own-risk-faq.147584
@@DirtDauberGarage Thank you!
Love to see family bonding. Your son is too cute 🤣.
Thank you!
So the finger prints come off ? Anyway, that's exactly what I'm going to do to mine. The expedition is so high, scaffolding or taking it off, ha ha.
Looks great! Looking fwd to your work on the 40’s doors. Have to do mine too. Hoping to pick up some pointers
Yeah, I will make sure to do more "as I go" video. That is how some of the early vids were and not are more just updates. It takes a lot more work to make instructional vids, but I'll try to do it.
@@DirtDauberGarage thanks!
Great to see y’all still at it!
get this thing ready and come to the GSMTR ride in Oliver Springs Tn this year its only about a 3.5 to 4 hr drive from ATL all kinds of FJs will be there it would be amazing to see you there
That is an awesome idea and it would give me a goal to push for!! I will look it to it and hopfully be there!!! Thanks!!
Good Job, Keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
Love it! Good job on keeping the motivation throughout everything going on you never lost sight of finishing these things up. Enjoying the journey with you.
Thanks Aaron. This is good for my mental health. It is the way I unwind and relax. It has taken longer then I originally planned, but I don't put pressure on myself to work on it when I don't want to and there have been a couple times where I didn’t touch in for a month or two… but that is OK. These videos and the build thread on IH8MUD and all the encouragement I get there have been helpful to keep me motivated. Thank you and Lord Bless!!
How many hours you have in that
took us about 8 hours total
How do you eat an Elephant? At least your moving forward.
I didn't get to the roll bars. Need to get somemore hardner for my paint. Hopefully will get to that soon!
Each task is a step forward towards getting her on the road
Yes. That is my thought as well. Small steps eventually turn into a long journey!
heck yeah!
Hey, just found your channel. I just picked up a ‘77 FJ40 back in October of 2022 and just started cleaning it up. Looking forward to seeing all your videos. I'm a relative newbie to restoring cars, so we'll see how my project goes. Will maybe post all my pictures and videos online as well.
Sweet. Check out IH9MUD.com It has tons of great resources. Shoot me an email or a DM on MUD if you have any questions or need anything!!
I think I paid $2K for mine back in the mid 90s. It was running but needed a new center arm steering bushing rebuild. After that, it was drivable. I repainted it and drove it all over the high desert of Nevada, California and Oregon for years. I put new tires and wheels on it and gave it to my son a few years ago (on the trailer headed for his house in the last pic), and he's in the process now of going through it. Now looking at the prices, I wish I'd kept it. lol ua-cam.com/video/NRSEyu3ziKw/v-deo.html
Any clear coat applied?
Yes, we did two stage color and clear coat
Yup love the name! This is what I need to do as well when spring comes back around in March or April! Here in Alabama weather should be warm enough by then !
Where you at now with the 55?
Havn't done much on the 55, just gathering parts. Going to pick up a disk break front end from a 77 FJ40. I also have a 4 speed trans, split case, and a 2F motor from an 84 FJ60 that I am going to install in the 55. I probaby have about another 6 months or so on the FJ40, then I can move on to the FJ55
@@DirtDauberGarage Disk brakes on the front are a smart move indeed, how does it work with emissions in your state? do you need to keep all the junk on the 2F motor?
@@michaelmacleod No, I am in Georgia and there is no emissions on a vehicle this old.

You have the front drive shaft on back to front and the universal joints need to be in line otherwise the driveshaft will vibrate.
Yes I have another view where I fix this. Thanks for noticing!
hi is the seal sits correct side? on the video?
Which seal are you refering to? The main seal? I am pretty sure it is correct. I have driven the FJ40 now and it seems to be working. No leaks :O)

Yes, I have done some work on Bucky as well. Mostly just gathering parts righ now. Once I get the FJ40 on the road, I will turn my attention to the FJ55.
