Hiking the Cheaha Lake Trail in Cheaha State Park, Alabama

- This is a hike from near the top of Cheaha Mountain to the relatively easy to access Rock Garden viewpoint and on down to Cheaha Lake.
The Rock Garden near the top of Cheaha Mountain provides spectacular views of the fall colors below. From the Rock Garden, I hiked down VERY steeply around cliffs and down rocky stairs. The fallen leaves made the going very treacherous, but by going slow I was able to pick my way down to the less steep but beautiful forested slopes below. I did this as a one-way hike with my wife picking me up at the beautiful Cheaha Lake after my 790 ft (241 m) descent over about one mile (1.6 km).

Such a gorgeous place. The short hikes and views from the top are awesome too.
It is! The cliff-side cabins up there are amazing places to stay at as well. Thanks for commenting. 👍
I love that place!
It s a wonderful place! 👍
That’s a really steep trail. I hiked it a lot of years ago … I think I was about 18 and it was a tough hike then. Going down and getting a ride back up was a good idea. 🦑
It is crazy steep! I highly recommend only doing that trail if you can arrange transportation. 👍
What a difference in temperature between our two states. PA is cold and gloomy right now. I’d rather be hiking the Cheaha Lake trail. Really nice views from the overlook. You could definitely see for miles. I guess I have to take back what I said about the difference in temperatures. You just said it’s in the fall. Happy hiking. 👍
Yes that was last fall. I have a bit of a backlog in hikes right now. Recently it has been cold and wet here, so feel for you. The views from Mount Cheaha are amazing. Near the very southern end of the Appalachian range.
