Thank you for the video! One question/clarification: At 28:55 there is a text saying the settlement could still inflict a hit on the orc unit. I do not think this is true as it is only the looser of a combat who suffers hits right? So as the settlement could never win the combat after that massive dieroll from the Orc reaver the orcs could never take a hit? I might be wrong but that is my interpretation of the rules.
I think what I was trying to say here is that I still had to roll the 1d6 for the settlement. Highly unlikely, but just that one d6 roll could have "exploded" with critical hits and the settlement could have actually won the combat. You are correct in that the loser of combat suffers hits.
half of the units are on the wrong side with diminished values . please read the rules before playing
It was just a set up mistake, I forgot to go back and flip the units. Also, I caught it before I started the playthrough. Thanks for watching (even if only for a minute).
Great video, although LOS is not blocked when firing from a higher elevation to a lower elevation, or vice versa. See rules 6.2.2.D. Greatly appreciate the detail and clarity of your video. Very helpful.
Couldn’t agree more!
Very high quality video & playthrough, keep up the good work!
Very well done. Thank you. Too bad for the "ground" noise.
Thanks! Wow, I forgot how bad these early videos are (sound/video-wise). I'll have to think about a "modern" redo of Don't Tread on Me.
please make videos for games from 100 war games on bgg, great videos, thanks!
First of all, I would like to thank you for taking the time to do a 'play through' of the game. I must confess I was quite surprised by your confusion about the pre-war phase. Looking over the text of that rule which is 6.1 all the way to 6.33, it seems very clear. The game has been played at the World Board Game Championships for 10 years and nobody has had a problem understanding the opening. In your video, I think you eventually 'got it right. In the opening paragraph of 6.1 it explicitly says that this 'pre-war' phase occurs OF COURSE before War is actually declared. So what you are doing is drawing ONE card and then your opponent does the same. You CAN play it to move forces on the board but one has to be careful because you can't invade as in Step 3 of the procedure. One is tempted to play all 7 cards (if you get them) but if you do that, when war DOES break out, your opponent might have as many as 6 cards left to play and would be able to attack you. At the tournaments, most good players held on to their cards unit was is declared. Sometimes though, their might be a position on the board that you think might be threatened by something your opponent did in the PRE-WAR phase and you might react. Over the years of tournament statistics we have found that the game is quite balanced and expert players can win as either side. I hope you enjoy the game and thanks for posting.
If you read the whole rulebook the "2 card maximum hold" really sticks in your mind (at least it did in mine). I do think that if the game is ever reprinted (which it really deserves) some additional text in the pre-war section would helpful. Each side is really building their 7 card hand in that phase for the spring of 1812 and you can hold all 7 cards if you choose. I will say the rulebook is one of the best I've read. Everything else is very clear to me and I (as you can probably tell) tend to overanalyze rulebooks. 😀
@@MyOwnWorstEnemy I'm glad you liked the game. If you do get to play it opposed, it can be really exciting. Again, thanks for posting.
Quite enjoyable video-thanks.
You plyed a 1 op to move Dearborn but he needs 3 ops to move doesn't he?
Dang! Yes, good catch. I could only move 1 unit up and not Dearborn with two. I'll adjust that at the start of the next video. [edit]It was point out on BGG that the move is legal if the Minor Ops card is played for the event and not just for the Ops value. I'll just say that's what I did. 😁]
Don't the British get two points for Ft. Mackinac when it's captured. ( the U.S. loses two and the British gain two?).
It's an "overall" victory point system so their two VPs erase the US two VP lead.
What's your opinion if the game did not have a "pre-war," phase but just started with war declared? Does the Pre-war add much?
The pre-war doesn't add a whole lot but it does give each side the chance to adjust their forces at the cost of taking actions once the war breaks out. I'm not sure it was 100% necessary to the game.
@@MyOwnWorstEnemy Perhaps when we play it next month we'll skip it as an experiment- it'll shorten playing time if nothing else. Worth a try.
This game really gives me the idea that it’s 1812 from Columbia Games but on steroids
Much more detailed and historic.
I know it's a year late, but I have been debating whether to pick this up so glad to see instructuve play through. Looks good so far. Off to ep 2
Thanks for this Any thoughts on why OtRII is rated Solitaire Suitability Medium, while HSN is rated Solitaire Suitability High?
Good question, no idea. HSN is said to be a good intro to the series, maybe that's why?
Hey, not sure if you're still monitoring this video but wanted to let you know how much I'm enjoying your playthrough.
Agree, I just started watching your series yesterday and it’s easily one of the best done on this game
Imm going to have to look at the rules again. I thought all the counters started flipped to the reduced side
Ive just started this. Let’s just say, turn 1, I’m not doing well as the French.
Thanks very much. These videos helped me get my mind around the pattern of play.
Speaking of little, tiny annoying things
Can't remember where, but I heard this was coming out, and I thought it would be right up my alley. (The more obscure and neglected the history, the more I'm interested LOL) I may have missed this, but how solo-friendly is it?
I'm going to do a playthrough so we'll see.
I do not agree, I like the art work,. I am looking forward to playing this soon as well. Nice video
Would love to see a playthrough of the Aleutian game
Coming fairly soonish!
The Aleutian game is very interesting, its not something you see a lot on that particular campaign
Superb over-view. In our experience lake control of Erie and Ontario and the Niagara frontier are the key points to victory. Until the next episode!
You are a wizard!
Totally agree. Anyone who thinks you can play any cooperative game solo should try the original Grizzled. Even the "solo" expansion sucks.
I used to have the 1986 edition. You should have seen how small its rulebook was. I did play a game of that back then. I traded it years later and got the 2010 edition also. Will be interested to see a playthrough. Maybe it will inspire me to get off my rear and play it. It warmed me heart to see a fellow Federation Space fan out there. When I was 13 years old, I played the General War solo. I had no life.
Nothing wrong with solo play. 🙂 Check out the update to Federation Space that Byron Henderson did on BGG. It makes the game playable! I may run it at Origins next year.
Thank you very much for the review of the game. Yes, it is now out of print. It has had a 'good run' at the World Board Gaming Championships in Pennsylvania for over 10 years. I believe one fellow is trying to revive it again next year.
Thanks, Gilbert! Hope you stick around for the playthrough. I'm also looking forward to trying War for America and Battle for a Continent.
Air Strikes cost 1 fuel, while Air Interceptors cost 3. Also, you forgot to move your TG 3. ....Your videos were extremely helpful, thanks for making!
Air to air combat: what if both sides get nothing in the results? Do they keep rolling again or move on
Recommend this "My Own Worst Enemy" Rebel Fury Chickamaugua battle demo. Clearly presented & organized.
Too historic for some but interesting and pleasurable to play the entire war scenario. Each counter is an historic regiment or leader unlike some others.
I was very interested in this game because decades ago I played and liked the Columbia Games' old 'Block Game," ^War of 1812* which also only covered the area around the Great Lakes.
Nice overview. Not a lot of games that cover this conflict. If you haven't, check out Dawn's Early Light from Compass Games. Strategic level, card driven gmae covering the entire area of the war. Many features are abstracted but, nevertheless, a pretty fun game to play.
The look and some of the rules remind me of 1812 by Columbia Games but way more depth. I am looking forward to seeing the play
Yeah, same here. Played that game back in the 70s.
I am glad you are taking a look at this. I have had it sitting on my shelf for quite a while and maybe it will inspire me to play it.
Thanks How would you rate the complexity compared to Wilderness War?
My best estimate would be that this is a little less complex.
Please use the solitaire rules for the playthrough as that is how I would play it.
Looks interesting, thanks! I'd much prefer 2-handed, not a big fan of solo bots.
Yes, the CSRs had some problems of Category definition. I don't like that Best Hypothetical Game does not specifically include or exclude Science Fiction and/or Fantasy. The CSRs used to have a specific SciFi/Fantasy Category. They need to bring that back, or add it into the Hypothetical category, or explain why they are excluding it.
I wonder if I can get sponsored too! Will you put in a good word for me?
IIRC, at 45:00, the Ambush would not have killed the ogre as there was no critical hit. An ambush leads to a strike and a strike inflicts only a single hit with one or more successes (9.7) Unless I misunderstood the rules ^^ Thanks very much for the playthrough though, I very much appreciate it and you were quite helpful in my understanding of the rules!
Yes, you are correct the ogre should have only flipped.
Looks interesting.
Great video!
Thanks for making this! I got the game set up, read the rules and it all was simple enough, but the game is so open it’s hard to decide what to do at first!
Notice that both halves of The Players' Aid survived! Alexander's deadeye marksmanship improved and we pulled together.
This is a silly distinction. If this is the hill you're going to die on you must live a pretty stress free life.
I won't die on this hill but I will roll my eyes from the top of it.
Best video ever.
One other comment. I have also had experience with Alexander in an apocalyptic setting (and it didn't go well) and I would have not given him the gun nor assigned him the responsibility of getting boards. Also by my amazing rolling near the end, you should have given me a weapon. Just saying.
😆
