Ghost Town Wonders
United States
Приєднався 7 кві 2021
Ghost Town Wonders is a collection of the stories and histories of abandoned and living ghost towns for all ages and members of the family to enjoy. We have a passion for exploring abandoned ghost towns and other western towns with a long and compelling history. I have endeavored to research the best and most accurate historical information available. The videos are created with satisfaction of great labor. The labor I have undertaken, although imperfections exist, I am confident care has been taken to present the facts as they have been written. In addition to the history, I have personally visited all of the sites and tried to capture the beauty of the desert open plains, rugged mountain ranges and whatever wildlife I may encounter. I sincerely hope you enjoy these video presentations as much as I enjoy the process of making them.
HAMILTON, NEVADA
The desired purpose of this video is to present a brief history of the town of Hamilton, Nevada. The subject was selected as part of a bigger goal to visit and document as many ghost towns in Nevada and the southwest as I can. The video fits in with the idea that local history, when properly studied, contributes to general history.
This video is an effort to encourage others to compile a record of some phase of their own local history.
Documented history was complicated to research because, except for a few unimportant records, all the county records and newspaper files of White Pine County had been destroyed in a Hamilton courthouse fire in 1885.
As a result, many technical papers on mining, various state
reports, historical photos, and scattered issues of Hamilton newspapers were not available.
An effort has been made to follow a rather definite
plan in the organization of this video. The order of presentation is somewhat chronological, from discovery, boom years, demise and present day.
In the preparation of this video presentation, I have used the following sources of information.

In 1863 a local Indian revealed a good specimen of silver ore to, “Famous Scout, Prospector, Expert Rifleman, and Missionary to the Indians,” William Hamblin. Hamblin was one of those, ‘Mormons’, who founded Gunlock, Utah, in 1857 and came to Clover Valley in the early 60’s, and was said to be the first white man to settle in Meadow Valley. Later in 1872, Hamblin would be an essential witness i...

Owens Lake

This is a historical presentation of mining in and around Owens Lake. Owens Lake was given its present name by the explorer John C. Frémont, in honor of one of his guides, Richard Owens. Starting in 1913, the river and streams that fed Owens Lake were diverted by Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) into the Los Angeles Aqueduct, and the lake level started to drop quickly. As the l...

Today, Ballarat is a virtual ghost town. It was founded in 1897 as a supply point for the mines in the canyons of the Panamint Range. A quarter-mile to the south is Post Office Springs, a reliable water source used since the 1850s. George Riggins, an immigrant from Australia, gave Ballarat its name when he proposed it should be named for Ballarat, Victoria. The town was founded in 1897. In its ...

Randsburg California Wandering prospectors from the El Paso District discovered that the Summit Range, located northeast of the El Paso Mountains, also contained placer values and began to dry wash for gold there in the early l890s. Thanks Daniel, another great narrative! I was just talking to my sister about visiting Pikes Peak, I'll have to make a detour to visit Victor when I go. Hopefully they have a cool coffee shop in their downtown?
Thanks. I understand they have a great coffee shop along the same row of buildings at the museum. I hope you get a chance to visit the area.
You do an awesome job researching the history, I hope that I can explore Colorado some day.
I hope so too!

I understand the Goldfield hotel is very haunted
Ha! I don't get near ghosts although my moniker suggests ghosts, I steer away from all evidence of ghosts. Thanks for watching the video. I have heard that the hotel is haunted, and some paranormal folks visit specifically for that purpose. Not me!
The Ridgecrest Earthquake of 2019 hurt commerce in the town of Trona. The fuel tanks at the Shell service station were compromised, causing its closure. No more weekend barbecued food and biker gathering place. The Dollar Store and bar are long gone. I have never seen a soul at the high school. I'm not sure if it remains open. There are several churches, however.
Thanks for sharing your story
Even into the 1970s, the earthquake escarpment adjacent to the 1872 graveyard was clearly visible from Highway 395. Today, erosion has largely flattened that feature into a gentle slope.
Good tungsten ore was also mined in the district
Wow, great video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Another interesting video. I've also only passed through Johannsesburg never stopped in town. I had believe it or not considered purchasing property there too. Interesting there was an old bus, a Twin Fageol, looks like an old US Postal vehicle parked on the property I'd thought about. Believe it or not it was that bus that sold me on the idea! Never ended up purchasing it. Though it was just an idea @ the time!
Just captured your presentations on Trona & Randsburg. Very well done thank you for the historical 411 behind both. I purchased a property in Trona a month before the big earthquake in July 4th 2019. On a road trip to Redlands to visit my Wife's relatives we made a brief stop in Randsburg. Yes weekends are definitely better & we knew even back then were told to visit Randsburg on a weekend vs weekday as it's few businesses are open then. No complaints still. Likewise we just did a walk through the town itself was interesting in of itself.
Dan, This is / was your neighbor Ed & Linda at VC RV, thanks you for recommending Fort Churchill it was awesome. Good to meet you and your son, great video!
Good to meet you as well. Glad you enjoyed Ft. Churchill. Safe travels.
My number one favorite place in the western U.S. I first went there in 1966. My last visit was in 1998. I camped there a few nights with my 11 year old son. For free, a guest of the Navaho people. We took a very memorable horseback trip up the canyon. I just love that place, and the very hospitable people. I wish the Dine’ good health, prosperity and better times ahead. Also thanks for helping neuter the many, many stray dogs. They were like ghosts, silently lurking around like so many people on this planet who have lost their way. 0:05
Thank you
You're welcome
Great video of Bonnie Claire, where was the location of the RR Station and rail bed there? I try to visualize how close it would be to centralize for shipping. Thanks for sharing!
The RR Station was down in the flats near the residence. You can see evidence of the RR bed nearby.
I wish they Would bring back Gem O Rama!!!!!
Another great history lesson and video, been through there a number of times on motorcycle camping trips thank you so much for doing these😮😊
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks for this. Very detailed and interesting historical account.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Went there in 1976 and again in 1995 I think. Great video! Keep up the great work!
Thanks Eric
I thought nothing could calm me down tonight (unbelievably bad week at work), but your drive through town actually did it. I genuinely feel better now.
Thank you for your histoical research. It is extremely interesting to me, a person who loves gold mining history, and actually worked in a few hard rock mines backin the 1970's.
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job, bringing Lone Pine Ca. to us all. Thank you.🙏
Awesome job. Thanks

Glad you like the videos
Thank you!!!
great way to start off my day with a new video from G.T.W and of course a few cups of black strong coffee......all the very best to everyone
Glad you like the videos. Thanks for watching.
It is difficult for westerners to realize that North Africa, including many of these towns, competed with the Romans so long ago that there was no Islam or Christianity at that time. Carthage itself competed with Rome for four hundred years or so. Hannibal of that city state was the one that crossed the Alps with their elephants to attack Rome. North Africa had economic and political power houses just like the north side of the Mediterranean Sea but our study of history has left much of that out. Thank you for your ex-pat insights. Too bad so many Americans never experience the world.
Turn up volume
Very good video
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it.
That Shorty bloke is a true gentleman.
G'day from Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
Thank you for all the hard work you did. Very interesting place. I stopped there on my way to the Navajo nation in 2007. Stayed at the Overland Hotel and hiked through the ruins. Fascinating place.
Glad you enjoyed it
