Biggest Crayfish Yet!!!! - Crayfish Chronicles
Переглядів 12 тис.9 років тому
This footage was filmed on the 21/12/2014 over the course of 1 dive. The visibility for this dive was very poor (about a foot) but I managed to bring in a good haul. During this dive I caught my biggest crayfish yet! weighing in at 6.5 lbs. Apologies for the video quality, as I say the conditions weren't the greatest.

This is some footage I had from the 2013-'14 dive season. Was filmed on Pania reef in Hawke Bay. It's not often that you see such good visibility in the Bay so we definitely enjoyed this dive! Song: Phoenix Rising by Bluetech

    98% undersize on the Coromandel. Leave them alone

    • @davidngawaka2970
      @davidngawaka2970 5 років тому

      They grow smaller and live longer, it's like that through the entire gulf, which is why once they're cleaned out they don't come back. People wouldn't rape and pillage if they lowered the sizing in the hauraki gulf/coromandel because the takings wouldn't be out of spite against the government. However majority have already been taken

    cant believe the amount of silt on the bottom, gotta be pumped out from all your big rivers in nz ahy.

    • @rscort4
      @rscort4 8 років тому

      Yeah our rivers here do a lot of damage to the visibility. The dive you're seeing here is one of the better days, some days the visibility can get as lower than half a metre. The area of NZ I live in, Hawkes Bay, is one of the worst for silt as we have many huge rivers pumping it into the bay. Any amount of rain and the visibility is ruined. Can be fun at times though 'cause you really have to work to get your crays, especially when you can't see them.

    Those are not Crayfish...Those are Lobsters. I guess they call them "Crayfish" in Australia though...weird. Crayfish are freshwater only in the rest of the world.

    • @rscort4
      @rscort4 8 років тому

      +surgeyX I live in New Zealand mate, says so in the title. You are right in some aspects, they are a specific species of lobster called spiny rock lobster. Here in New Zealand they are more commonly know as Crayfish though. We also have freshwater crayfish here, they are called koura.

    I recently bought one of those bags that you used, the man I bought it from said it would be pretty useless for crays, since they would cut through the mesh at the bottom. Has yours been good? Is it suitable for crays? Thanks

    • @rscort4
      @rscort4 8 років тому

      +Patrick Western Hey Patrick, I received this bag second hand about 6 years ago. Honestly crays is all I use it for and it's still going strong to this day. So to answer your question it is a very good bag for crays (as good if not better than anything on the market for crays) as long as you look after it and wash it thoroughly after your dive. Letting the salt water sit on the bag for long periods of time is not good for it and will weaken the material.

    • @patrickwestern7902
      @patrickwestern7902 8 років тому

      Thanks, mate. :)

    • @briansymmes7917
      @briansymmes7917 5 років тому

      These bags are the best for crays, you have to wash them well and they don’t last forever, but the spring loaded door is the easiest way to collect them. You can get a good one for around $50, and the crays won’t cut through the mesh.

    Ahh we saw a load of pots on the spot and thought it must have some bugs on it. Only to discover when we got down most of the pots were old and forgotten. Soo thankfully the spot hadn't been pillaged by the potters which was amazing because when we got down there we were faced with a lot of crays. =)

  • @Snizak3
    @Snizak3 11 років тому

    Awesome man thats what we would have done too. Good respect for the sea and resources. Did u just stumble across that area while diving at another spot?

  • @rscort4
    @rscort4 11 років тому

    I know the thing is we had been to the exact same spot a couple of days before and loaded up, only to find when we got home that we hadn't turned the camera on. So this time around we went easy on the crays and only took enough. Basically we treated it as a scenic dive and mucked around a lot feeding the fish (which I cut out of the video) and admiring the conditions and crays which we is a lucky find in this area of New Zealand. :p
