Late in 2021, we moved from Texas suburbia to New England country. We purchased a beautiful lot with a great, but old and dated, house. This is our story of adjusting to life in the country and updating our new home.

A few incidences to where the old oil filler pipe was left on the house, tanks removed and by accident, the oil company comes by and fills the basement with fuel oil. As a kid in Florida in the 1960's - 1970's, fuel oil furnaces were popular with the tank buried under the ground next to the house. More modest homes had a tank on a stand outside next to the house. These days, most who live in neiighoroods without natural gas have converted to heat pumps. Crazy to think that in 2024, people still use oil.
Your an AC saver. What thickness did you use? We have single pane windows so gonna use blank sheets to help with our other windows.
That new track is too narrow. It may be strong but the center of gravity will be too high, so any slight lean from ground changes, example due to moisture, will be very dangerous. Especially with children near by. Just add diagonal bracing to reduce danger.
Three cinder blocks and and four 2x4's is all you need. Nothing fancy, no brackets, no screws, no metal. Two more cinder blocks and three 2x4's will add another 8 ft length to it and keep on going. Overthinking the simplest thing is not needed here folks. It'a just firewood. Stack it and quit being all fancy.
Where did you buy the durplex?
OH HELL NAH I'VE BEEN RUNNING FOR MY LIFE
How did you get the vents to stay in the plexiglass.
The vents have small clips on them. So as long as the hole in the plexiglass isn’t too large the vent holds in place.
Why didn't you use glue for the side cut it right size
Why wouldn't you American stack the ends and then fill the middle? This doesn't make any sense.
I noticed that the crank window isn't open all the way, is it okay to just leave it partially open or is it better to just leave it fully open or maybe no difference at all?
Opening just a little might not allow the air to move freely (you don’t want to be sucking back in the ultra-warm air you’re also pushing out). Though that won’t be an issue if you only have one hose. I don’t think you need it open entirely (mine does not up to a 90 degree angle anyway), just enough to be pulling new air).
Yeah I also agree. You will want it all the way open to get the best air exchange for cooling otherwise you are working your ac harder and it well use more power to operate.
I've never seen fireworks that amazing before!
u look like roger federer
I wish I played tennis like him
What size duraplex do you use? thickness wise?
I can’t remember what I used when I made this video but when I remade them this year I used 0.080 duraplex, and it’s ok in my small window, but not sturdy enough in my bigger windows.
i though of a similar idea butt my casement window doesnt have a slot for fly screen. could not figure out how to mount it. please help :(
Would some strong tape hold it in place? Or 3 or 4 small nails?
Maybe consider magnetic or velcro tape. You just want to attach something with a reasonable seal to the window to close off the window except for the hoses. I'm surprised no one is doing a Saran wrap and duct tape solution. They even make heat shrink film to seal off windows for the winter that you might use.
Holy cow I had this problem and I was looking for the solution and think I just got it thank you bro 👌🏻
You’re most welcome. Hope it works for you.
How do you keep rain or bugs from coming into the vent?
Ooh er, that's one big spider 🕷 don't hurt it.
Does all the heat stay out? Or does outside heat come inside
The plexiglass has almost no insulating value (R0). Most heat will around the edge though, so good tape will help.
I would leave the side 2x4s and slap a roof on the thing
Great idea!
Can u see regular tv channels there?
With an antenna you should be able to.
Hello, how do you fix the plexiglass to the window frame so that it doesn't fall off, and get stuck to the frame?
Basically I made it a really snug fit. Then I used masking tape, which work really well on two of my three windows. In the window it didn’t work so well, I tapped a really small nail partially in.
Bloody excellent solution, thanks for the video man!
That wouldn’t hold in a storm though
Correct. Generally the temperature drops during our storms, so we can close the windows and turn off the AC.
Did you need to secure the vent openings/hoses to the plexiglass? I’m going to be doing this, but don’t want the hoses to be falling out.
The end of the hose had little clips on it, so as long as it was a snug fit, it clipped/snapped into place nicely.
Your idea is a good one! The only thing is your setup is not burglar-proof. If you run that at night with no one in the room, it can easily be pushed through. There must be a way to make this type of setup secure to a casement window?
any window ac can be pushed in through from thieves
My guess is that if no one was home, you could just have the AC shutoff and the window closed... Window AC's have always been a security risk unless you bolt them into a support frame underneath that's bolted to your house. However, I think that it would be worthwhile to look to see if there are any government subsidies for a heat pump to be installed as that could make up the difference between a professionally installed heat pump either split or central versus the portable units. Of course, if you're renting, the portable units might be your best option.
Why not just use the insert that came with it and then plexiglass for the remaining part of the window? Seems like it would be a lot easier at least. That's what I was planning to do.
same - how'd it go?
Yeah, but his method looks a lot cleaner.
This is a great video. Thanks for sharing. How much do you think you saved with the conversion so far?
Thank you for your kind words. It’s been almost 2 years now and we have no regrets at all. Our savings are undoubtedly in the thousands now. We were burning so much oil to heat the house it was painful. The gas boiler is considerably more efficient, and also heats the house faster. The heat pump helps to reduce dependency on gas too. Even in the summer the heat pump running in ac mode costs less electric to run than the old ac system. Accounting for the 10 year loan payments on the equipment and install, in the winter we are much better off (maybe $400-600 per month). In the summer is a little worse off because we still have the loan payment and obviously there’s oil to gas heating saving to offset the payment, just some marginal electric bill reduction. Beyond the saving, our home is far more comfortable.
@@oldcountryhouse Thank you once again for all of this extremely great info. We recently moved to CT and our oil heat bill is skyrocketing. We are looking to switch to natural gas or do a heat pump. Since our furnace is somewhat aged, now seems to be the time to start looking into the switch. Given that the oil price will not be dropping anytime soon, we are actively looking into what the best option is to go with.
@@lowKut start here: energizect.com/ There are huge incentives for heat pumps now. Small incentives for gas boilers but better than nothing I supposed. Here’s a summary of the steps I took. 5 steps for Oil to Natural Gas Conversion ua-cam.com/video/G-pVmZmqLGA/v-deo.html Good luck.
Seems to be good . But how much it costs?
amzn.to/43Xpd27 $299 now.
I bought a Lutron MS-OPS2H occupancy sensor. It has a ground and a neutral wire. Instructions say to connect neutral and ground to the ground if you don’t have a neutral. I added the piece of wire to the screw in the metal box and wire nutted the three wires together.the light came on and stayed on, so the sensor didn’t work. I took it out and I put my old one back in place. The old one worked without the ground, but since you showed me how to ground it, I did so. The main reason I was trying to swap it out is the old one was made for incandescent bulbs and doesn’t work well with led or fluorescent. It had gotten where it would just dim when it was supposed to turn off. We’ll see what is does not that it is grounded! I have this in my kitchen because there is only one light switch, if you come into the kitchen at night, it’s on the wrong side of the room!
Can you post the link to the air conditioner so I can buy it on amazon?
This looks like the only in stock version of my model that I can see right now. amzn.to/3Ui6dtt

You really need a front loader or tractor with a snow plow for that big of a property, then you won't need to swop batteries all the time.
Where do you live?
What screws did you use to mount it?
Great demonstration!
Bro, could you have just cut a round hole in the window glass (like you would for a cat door) and put a standard 100 mm fitting through that?
Probably, but would have required a new fitting. I was just utilizing the fitting that came with the AC unit.
You are a fool! You aren’t understanding what @UNGL8R is saying! You way over complicated the whole process! It’s a simple job. No need to make it more expensive, complicated, and intensive.

Beautiful property!!
Like an electric car
You're not wrong. You were just misinformed. Green this, and eco that sounds wonderful...it really does, but the tech isn't ready yet. I'd love an ev car, but I'm not willing to lay out that much money, only to watch the battery capacity decline after a few years to the point wheree I have to limp between charging stations.
Replace the battery with LiPO4, not sure what exactly you have as a battery currently, but it aounds like it's lead acid.
