    Yay for Wisconsin! Waukesha native here. I love love love this. I love that you listen to a scanner in the background. Do you think starting with a stainless steel color instead of white makes them pop more? It seems like it. I never knew about adding alcohol with the more metallic ones.

      HELLO FELLOW WISCONSINITE!! ❤️ My husband and I are paramedics in our area, so whenever he is on call, I'm always listening and making sure he's okay 🥰🩵💙 As far as leaving the stainless steel color underneath - it's typically not something I do, I usually DO want the colors to pop and be more visible, so I usually put down a white or some other lighter color first. But I like how the silver base is more mellow for this particular cup. If I were to spray paint it with something, I'd probably go with a metallic gold or a brown. I think having white would make it TOO colorful and it wouldn't look as realistic and wouldn't give me the muted and murky look I was going for. Thanks for your comment!! ❤️❤️❤️

      And as much as I love the metallic inks, just a drop or two can fan out and really take over. They can almost turn into blobs if you're not careful. So when I want just a little "ribbon" of metallic color, I usually dilute it like this first. 👍

    This is so cool looking. How much epoxy for that layer to add the glitter?

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 8 місяців тому

      I used 30mL of epoxy. For this method (where you want the glitter to sink down into the epoxy), you want to add a fairly thick "flood" coat so there's enough epoxy to make all of the glitter look "wet" or more matte-like. It decreases the overall amount of sparkle potential that the glitter has (compared to a traditional tumbler where you use a pretty small amount of epoxy to adhere the glitter), but I think the overall look is really nice. 💕

    I love you video and the mug is beautiful! I had problems with the epoxy not adhering to some of my resin even after I cleaned tumbler with alcohol before starting. Do you have any suggestions of why?

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 8 місяців тому

      First, I sand my stainless steel cup with sand paper. Then I wash it with water and a little dawn dish soap. I rinse it really well, then dry it well too. (then spray paint, if that's in your plan). I don't clean mine with alcohol before applying epoxy because even after dry, alcohol can cause issues with the epoxy layer (and fingerprints too, for that matter- so I wear gloves after it's dry). Cleaning with alcohol before applying epoxy is notorious for creating "fish eyes" (little divots in your resin). I would guess this might be your problem. Sometimes fish eyes still happen with these swirl cups (where you drop alcohol inks on top of your resin). When I get these, once dry/cured, I lightly sand over them and apply another epoxy layer.

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 8 місяців тому

      There are some turners out there that do have a tilt feature, but I don't have that, so I'm not sure where to get those. I just use an inexpensive single turner that I can just pick up all together and tip it as I want to. Then when I'm done with the swirls, I just set it back down on the table.

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 9 місяців тому

      I have used several different things for the white, including resin dye as well as a concentrated white pigment. I would guess that as long as it makes an opaque white, it would work just fine! The only thing I would be a little careful with is actual acrylic paint, as that can speed up the curing process, and you can all of a sudden have a hot, gooey, sticky resin that will not move or be able to be applied. ❤

    Hi! thanks for this tutorial, it's very helpful. I have a question though. How can you estimate how many stones you would need for a project? Like how many packs per size should I order for a tumbler like this?

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 Рік тому

      Ooooh, this is SO difficult to estimate. There are so many factors that play into this. However, I'll try to give you a super rough estimate. So, I just taped off a 1"x1" square on mine and counted what I used in that area. In that square inch, I used 13 of the 5mm, 11 of the 4mm, 21 of the 3mm,and 11 of the 2mm. So for a 20oz skinny like I used in this video (which has a height of about 8.2 and a circumference of 9.1) would have a square area of about 75 square inches in total. That would mean (if all my areas were similar in size dispersion), I would have used about 975 of the 5mm stones; 825 of the 4mm; 1,575 of the 3mm; and 825 of the 2mm. I hope this helps at least a little!!! ❤️❤️

    I have a couple tumblers that were already painted (possibly a powder coat) when I bought them. Since spray painting is not my favorite thing to do, I thought these would be perfect for me. So is there anything else I need to do in prepping the cup beside hand washing it?

    • @fourthandbirch9809
      @fourthandbirch9809 Рік тому

      You have to be EXTREMELY careful with a powder-coated tumbler. The powder coat usually repels the epoxy quite a bit, and I've even heard horror stories of people having their entire coat of epoxy just peel off of the cup. I have never used a powder coated tumbler, so I can't give too much advice. But I'd almost think you'd have to sand off all of the powder coat? Which wouldn't be what you want if you bought them for their color. However, most of the tumblers I make are VERY forgiving to poor spray-paint jobs (I am not good at spray painting at all!). Most of my designs cover up the base coat layer nicely, it's just there in case anything peeks through.

    • @luckypnut
      @luckypnut Рік тому

      I wondered about the epoxy repelling. I think I will sand off most of it then spray paint it. Or I can always do a vinyl wrap after I scratch it up a little with sand paper. I would think a wrap would be easier and the epoxy shouldn’t repel. I’m still a rookie at this so I’m just guessing. BTW… I did do a coffee swirl but the ink moved so much overnight, it just looked brown. So I’m going to try again with a fast cure to keep the ink from moving so much. Thank you! ❤

      @@luckypnut let me know how it goes!!! ❤️ And I've been using only fast cure for so long, it's hard to remember the regular cure stuff & how it's so different. But the fast cure is definitely great for any of the swirl cups, because it doesn't move around very long. And now that you have one under your belt, you have the feel for it, and you can definitely do it fast enough and get all your steps done for a fast cure! And you could probably do it as a layer right over your brown one (just sand it a little first) so you don't have to strip it or waste a cup! 🥰

    Ordered my inks for this. however the white pigment they are out of stock at moment. Could I just use white ink. My personnel preferance on mine will be less white. Yours is just fantastic. Applying heat are you using a hair dryer or heat gun?

      Thank you so much!! ❤️ You can definitely use any white ink or pigment! Some are meant to "cell" or "feather" more, so I avoid those if I can (for this project, at least). And I use a heat gun that allows me to dial down the heat when needed: a.co/d/dw8GX73
