    Any other tips for getting decent volume on recordings? Playing as loudly as I reasonably can, I’m having the issue you described where, in order to get the track to be a decent volume, I end up also hearing a lot of recording noise like a hissing sound. My mic is a shure sm57 less than an arm’s length away, into a Steinberg sr-12 at about 75% gain recording with reaper. The guitar is either too queit but free of recording noise, or loud enough but noisy.

    Hey Colin, you mentioned at the end of this video that if you were preparing this track for an album release then the mastering process would be much more in depth. What extra steps would you take in that process to get a few tracks album-ready? Thanks so much for your content, it has been invaluable to me!

    • @colindeibertmusic
      @colindeibertmusic Місяць тому

      Hey! The difference with an album is that you’re then having to make each track similar in overall volume and average loudness to each other which is more tricky. When you master songs as a collections it’s helpful to meter them using different loudness units like LUFS (average loudness) and things of that sort. Additionally you might also subtly eq each track to make sure one doesn’t have a ton of treble/bass vs the others. Let me know if that helps!

    Thanks man! Can I ask you what reverb is used in this recording? and which other processes are being applied? :)

    • @colindeibertmusic
      @colindeibertmusic 4 місяці тому

      You’re welcome! The reverb I use is actually an old Waves Plugin, the IR-1. Specifically a reverb captured from Trinity Church. However, you don’t really need that specific plugin but just get an IR or Impulse Response file and a plugin to load it. I have another reverb video where I go into a bit more detail but I’ll try to make a new updated one soon! Basically the IRs are captures from real spaces and not a synthetic digital reverb so it sounds much more natural than just slapping a reverb plugin on the track. Hope that helps!

    Would it make sense to pair a small diaphragm with a big one for stereo recording? I have a rode m3. I'm looking for pairing it with another microphone.

    • @colindeibertmusic
      @colindeibertmusic 4 місяці тому

      Sure! Yeah that pairing would work. The only thing you’ll want to watch out for is the volume balance between the two in stereo since one of the mics might tend to be more assertive than the other. Usually I’d adjust it by either moving experimenting with mic placement or just watching the volume balance when you get to mixing. You’d just want to avoid your stereo image leaning too heavily to one side.

    Can you make any suggestions for recording the heavy rasqueado strums of the Flamenco guitar styles?

    • @colindeibertmusic
      @colindeibertmusic 4 місяці тому

      It depends on the recording and instrumentation. Solo flamenco guitar, I would eq it much like a classical guitar. In a mix with Cajon, palmas and maybe a bass I’d eq out a little more of the low end so it doesn’t get too muddy. I hope that helps!

    • @gilrosado_media
      @gilrosado_media 4 місяці тому

      @@colindeibertmusic I play solo flamenco guitar a bit and I have a lot of percussive "golpe" technical stuff as well. It gets a bit muddy in recordings maybe because I have to EQ out the lower frequencies in some cases or else mic it differently.

    • @colindeibertmusic
      @colindeibertmusic 4 місяці тому

      @gilrosado_media For sure! Something else you can try is to do a narrow dip around the frequency of the golpe to keep it under control. You might also try some creative light compression to balance out the levels a bit so it’s not too dynamic.
