A better way to calculate your margin is to divide the cost. If you want 50% margin then divide .38 by .5 and you would have a true 50% mark up of .76 per square foot.

Been passing up on good jobs because i dont know the biz side of painting. Im great at painting but I am ignorant with bids and how to deliver. I worked at a commercial company as a foreman and have started my own gig doing residential. It would be great to learn this and start making real money and not home to home trying to get paid.

Bids on painting is like golf advise 😂 too many variables to have an exact algorithm 😮 main goal always expected murphy to show up with laws,and charge what you need to charge to make money( shoot mid 90s) ! If the estimate on the job concerns you before you dip a brush, walk away your over your head and will loose chasing the money😮 ! HIGH BIDS REQUIRE HIGH EXPECTATIONS, LOW BIDS GET YOU IN TROUBLE!

So you charge people per square feet but a window takes up 50 percent of the wall ,you charge to paint something you dont paint because it takes to much time to measure a window and subtract 😂😂😂😂

This advice is hypocritical, usally the case when quoting and paying lowest labor as possible without doing the job yourself, MATERIAL IS ALWAYS PAID BY THE CUSTOMER WITH A 30 PERCENT MARK UP to cover busy work !
