My channel highlights experiences in Southern Italy, especially Calabria and Basilicata, lesser-known regions located in the toe and instep of the Italian boot. You can read all about these beautiful and fascinating places in my books, CALABRIA: THE OTHER ITALY, described by Publisher’s Weekly as “an intoxicating blend of humor, joy, and reverence for this area in Italy’s deep south,” and BASILICATA: AUTHENTIC ITALY, “recommended to readers who appreciate all things Italian” by the Library Journal. These armchair travelogues explore daily life, culture, history, the arts, food, society and tourism of off-the-beaten-path Italy and are widely available in both paperback and various e-book versions.

Where is this located? Lovely view of the country side- quite surreal
Craco is in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata, which is in the instep of the Italian boot.
Thanks for letting me know- Might have to put this Interesting spot on my bucket list!
It's on my Basilicata Cultural Tour www.calabriatheotheritaly.com/basilicata-tour/
WHAT'S THE BLACK HILLS ???😊😊
I think you're referring to the Lucanian Dolomites, both in the opening image and in the one with the staircase going up the side.

lovely....
Whoo hoo! Love Bergamot!!!
Hello
I've read that the original name of Italy was CALABRIA...
The name Italy came from Italo, King of the Oenotrians, who lived in the area of Calabria in the late Iron Age.
my biggest wish is visit that place with my family...🥺
lovely....

Thank You , I learned a lot from your video. Very smart, and interesting.
Glad you enjoyed it.
QUESTION, IS THIS CITY CLOSE TO THE ADRIATIC SEA!!!!
It's west of the Adriatic, about 2 hours from Bari. It's quicker to get down to the Ionian coast from Castelmezzano, about an hour and 20 minutes.
"PromoSM"
You are right. Calabria is the other Italy. As a former American who has immigrated to Switzerland, I have visited Italy often: Roma, Milano, Bologna, Firenze, Palermo. Time to head south-especially since both of my wife's maternal grandparents come from San Giovanni in Fiori in Calabria. (Mister I come from a small town in Vermont. Well-I lived in Craftsbury Common Vermont pop 300. All the towns in Vermont are small. Ha ha.)
Absolutely! Not only will you enjoy Calabria, but it will be especially meaningful for your wife. I have a blogpost about San Giovanni in Fiore - www.calabriatheotheritaly.com/san-giovanni-in-fiore/ - and we visit it on my Traditions and Food of Calabria Tour - www.calabriatheotheritaly.com/calabria-tour/traditions-and-food-of-calabria-tour/ - join us!
@@Karens-Travel Grazie! I appreciate the two links. The link to the traditions and food of Calabria tour was broken. I was able to track down the current tour page without difficulty, but I thought I should let you know. I would love to join you for the tour-if not this year, then some time. Non vedo l'ora!
@@jeremiahreilly9739 Thanks for the heads-up on the link - there was a dash too close... Ci vediamo nel futuro!
Where would I be able to enjoy the music of Piergiuseppe Maggi and Gerardo Vespucci if I traveled to Calabria?

Gorgeous

Karen buongiorno ma sei un agriturismo o in un villaggio turistico?
Questo è un villaggio turistico.
buon giorno
Nice video on Calabria! Both my mom and dad were born and raised there and came to America in about 1929 from Reggio Calabria. I believe it was one of the first regions to be called Italy. Hope all my ancesters there now are all well and ok. Anthony Joseph Lucchese
Yes, I hope your relatives are doing well. You're right about the name Italia. It derives from the Oenotrian people in the area of Calabria who called themselves the Itali after their king Italo. I've written a lot about Reggio, both in my book, Calabria: The Other Italy and on my blog. And you can visit the beautiful city on the Strait of Messina on one of my small-group tours!
Where is this place in ITALY Basilica
Basilicata is in the instep of the Italian boot, between the regions of Campania, Puglia and Calabria in Southern Italy. There's a longer video on my page with a lot of detail.
Che bella. Love the accordion musica.
Brava Karen !!!
Grazie!
great rtavel,
So happy to see this! My grandparents are from Calabria, and I’ve always wanted to go there.
Calabria is a beautiful region - consider joining this excellent tour!
L'Italia non è che una mera espressione geografica. Η Καλαβρία ...La Calabria - e si è rivelata così soprattutto per il Mezzogiorno - è la madre patria greca.
Hi Karen, I'm about 3/4 through your book, and enjoying it very much! My paternal grandfather came to Philadelphia from Rogiana Gravina when he was 10, and as a teenager, I worked in his butcher shop in Chealsea Heights,N.J. He never spoke of Italy to me, and your book fills in a lot of voids! Now at 80 yrs of age, I think back of those times with him, and think how tough it must have been for him!! P.S. I still love to cook! It must be in the genes! lol😃
Sorry Karen, make that Roggiano Gravina !!
Always happy to hear from someone who's enjoyed my book and glad to have been able to fill in a few gaps about your ancestral homeland. There's more on my blog - 100+ posts with lots of photos about Calabria, not specifically Roggiano Gravina but the history, flavor and culture of Calabria. Happy cooking (and eating)! www.calabriatheotheritaly.com/blog/
Is anyone still looking for the hidden treasure of Alaric? So the legend goes.🙂
Yes, it would seem there's always someone interested. About 10 years ago the mayor of Cosenza had a project that he was trying to push through using public money. The plan was bandied about for quite a while before it was finally shut down by the Minister of Cultural Heritage. And about two years ago a team of French engineers and researchers proposed another investigation. I never heard what came of that one...
❤
Thank you very much for this magnificent lecture of a region of Italy that has been ignored for so long, but which is a true treasure in many aspects, as you have pointed out with great eloquence and tangible evidence.
Thank you

Tante Grazie!!!!
As an Italian born in Calabria I am highly offended by the title of this video and your book. What do you mean by the "Other" Italy? Isn't Calabria in Italy? Help me understand!
The title is not meant to offend in any way. When most people think of Italy, they think of the famous places. Calabria is off the radar for most visitors to Italy and largely unknown even to its fellow countrymen. Both Italians and non regularly ask me, “But why Calabria?” I often respond, “Why not Calabria?” It is a land whose potential is yet to be achieved. It’s waiting to be discovered and explored. Calabria is an Italy less traveled, the “other Italy.”

Hay nacieron mis abuelos rosa ienco y Salvador nesci !!
nice
Calabria is the only place where people dance in the street or plazas. The statues of Reace where brought to America, now the Speer and the shield are missing. Don't forget the nduja spreadable salami and the long nose fishing boats, the Tropepa onions, the women carrying things on they heads hand free.Calabria is a peninsula with the Mediterranean sea on 3 sides of it, perfect for a sea side holiday its also cheap.
Tenho parente aí Josepe Guzzi
Thank you Karen for this video, I was born in Calabria but live in the U.S. now. I've always been interested in Calabrian history and in particular my specific region and have studied it intensely. I'll be ordering your book. subscribed.
Thanks, in addition to my book "Calabria: The Other Italy," you may be interested in my blog, which has over 100 articles about the region. Buona lettura!
