Yeah if anything I think the fromsoft game are becoming worse because they have LESS bullshit. In Dark souls there were invicible phantoms, the cave of giants that is 100% in darkness. They don't do this anymore, they grew soft. Or it's not fun anymore because I see through it, random guy is standing back to me, yeah I know there is another one waiting for me and that it's a trap. But that's ok ! It was so awesome for me at that moment because it was so unexpected ! But now it's not and I'm ok with it, I know I can't relieve the past. And they still manage to push me even further with the bosses, that's awesome !

I'm sorry but the real lost art is the willingness to EDIT YOURSELF Sorry but if it takes you 2 hours to get your point across, you're rambling. And I refuse to believe anyone actually pays attention all the way through. If you really care about 'video game critique' you'd make compelling, concise content. Organize your thoughts, iterate, try harder. Only then will the bar be raised.

I'm not a elden ring player, but it's unanimous amongst my friend group who are hardcore souls enjoyers and ER players that the dlc was absolute dog doodoo, including the weird incest femboy plot for the final boss of the dlc. that being said, yeah, I do not trust anything joseph anderson or his lackey imitators say after how he "critiqued" soma, a game I actually have played several times. If you'd like to see Joseph get demolished by someone who actually can critique, watch mauler's about 10 hour response to it. And to gred, good vid for the most part.

I’d completely forgotten how much of a condescending cunt Joseph Anderson could be. I’ll always appreciate his Fallout 4: 1 Year Later video, which actually sold me on buying the game in spite of its flaws. But when it comes to meaningful critique, Joe definitely has more misses than hits. I agree with basically everything you said but I want to push back on one argument you seemed to keep making. Regarding this idea that the critic’s job is NOT to give feedback to the developer. I STRONGLY disagree. In fact, all reviewers, critics, or video essayists should strive to give meaningful, well thought-out feedback that is useful not only to the creator of the work, but to any aspiring artists out there looking to improve their craft by avoiding the mistakes that the critics highlight. The true problem is that most critics, like you proved with Joe and Feeble, are not as good at giving feedback as they think they are.

One error to point out youre using the layman term of "Theory" A sceintific theroy is treated basically as fact and the only reason it is not called a "fact" is because there is still the possibilty, no matter how small, that it can still be proven wrong. But a scientific theory is the same as the truth at our current understanding of reality unlike the layman term for theory.

Didn't play Erdtree because well...I'm just getting tired of the formula and I've found I really only like souls because of the art design but the actual game design is just oldhat and repetitive to me. I really did not like my final moments with Elden Ring, the third act was just too much of the same thing and too long, so I just really didn't want to pick up Erdtree, and probably never will unless it's been so many years that I have the feeling I need to suffer a bit. But, I did notice right around Cyberpunk 2077 dropping that something had gone horribly wrong in game critique. It was the ugly reared head of "everything is bad nothing is good except the illusive side comments about something being cool between roasting every minor detail whether it has anything to do with what the game was trying to accomplish"...it's this kind of Cinemasins badfaith idea that media is a series of objective things that are good and subjective things they failed to make me feel because...newsflash, you weren't open to ever feeling it. You shut off, because you have a way of percieving media now that makes it impossible to actually allow yourself to be gripped by it. This bad faith "I'm analayzing through the lens of I'm disatisfied with this and here is why" instead of "what did I actually experience"...and when you take in this type of mentality through review it's also HOW YOU PLAY. Anytime anything goes wrong, it's this rot that suddenly comes rearing back, this habit they've developed of seeing an issue as not just simple a blip or a choice they don't agree with...but a tantamount failure of the artist. I didn't like Elden Ring not because it didn't accomplish what it intended to do, I just don't think I care for what FromSoftware is selling anymore. I've had enough, they perfected a formula I've been tired of for years. I could critique it but, like it's so obviously a well made game, my only real critique is they stretched it too far. Could have been like half the length...but that's just general modern open world design and what a lot of gamers want.

Lately, I've become more not hostile towards, but finding less value in critique the way it's been done online. At the end of the day, these "critiques" online are all ultimately subjective and the creator of the critique airing their subjective praises and grievances with a creative work. I don't need 2-7 hour "long form" analysis that spins in circles for half of it and feels less like a critique and more of a nitpick of every single event and mechanic. I find regular online creators doing normal reviews far more enjoyable and relatable as a viewer and consumer. Tell me what you liked, what you didn't like, give your thoughts on what could be improved. There you go. None of this requires hour plus long videos every time. A lot of the time I stop watching these longer form critiques because they don't come off as genuine constructive criticism. To me it comes off as these few creators waxing poetic and being as pretentious as they can be. You can feel in real time when a game irks you, or how it moves you the player emotionally. Nobody has to be pretentious about it. That's why I want to start making my own thoughts and opinions on the games I play instead of letting people tell me how im supposed to feel. Nothing ruins a game i want to play more than discourse around it before I've got the chance to play it. These creators tearing down or propping up companies like from software to ludicrous pedestals is also dangerous in my opinion. As soon as someone puts something or someone up as an untouchable masterpiece it invites negativity from people who got different things out of a game. I can't relate to these people that say "dark souls saved my life" or "dark souls is the most important game ever made because it helped me beat my depression." Any game can do that for any individual. I don't get what makes from software games so special over any other game, old or new. It's a game. They have their flaws because nothing is perfect. People also not doing their own research. Ff7 remake devs were upfront about the changes they were making and how it was going to be a compilation title. Yet want to act betrayed because the developers "lied to them." I'm tired of it all. If you enjoy a game, talk about it, spread the word. If you dislike a game, give constructive feedback, don't tear it down and discourage others from trying it for themselves. Unfortunately the latter is what we see more of nowadays when it comes to game "reviews/analysis/critique." Thank you for this insightful video on critique.

Had a pretty negative attitude towards this video going through because I am a big fan of Joseph's content but I think I came around by the end. You've really opened my eyes to a lot of things I've never thought about. To keep the endless cycle going, there's still a few points you made that I don't agree with. I don't entirely see why it should be necessary to describe everything you love about a game- I think you're right that it's a disingenuous to call it a "Critique", but I don't find the format itself to be as infuriating as you seem to find it. Joe brings up a lot of examples of things he doesn't like. Whether or not the number of positive-to-negative points he brings up is proportional to the amount he likes the game seems kind of irrelevant. Does it make it hard to interpret his real feelings on the game as a whole? Yes, but I'm not sure that's what we should be focusing on. To me the value of all of his videos has been to learn a few new facts about the game, give you another chance to reflect on your own experience, and walk a way with a better understanding of the game and your experience with it. I do admit the negative interpretation of his view does a lot of harm to the community but thats a problem that should be addressed seperately. He talks about his personal opinions too, but thats because we're only human and a strict list of facts would be boring to watch. Next point, I know Joe isn't a game designer (or at least wasn't for most of his career, i don't know the extent of his involvement with his side-project is) but is it that bad to suggest changes to a game? Yeah, it comes off as pretentious, he could be better about that, but anyone should be able to state things they didn't like *and* state that they think it should be changed. That doesn't excuse them getting mad if its not, but it's up to the game designers whether or not his opinion is one worth catering to. I don't work for Fromsoft but I've made some games in the past. I've found plenty of the points and ideas he brings up to be valuable in my own work. I've had players tell me I should design my game differently. Yeah, it's can feel pretty insulting but it can also be very valueable. That's true for people I didn't explicity hire as critics and it's true even when the person suggesting has no game design experience or goes against the intent I had for the game. They're just practicing the same thing I do and sharing it with me. Anyone can watch Game Makers Toolkit and pretend they're a game designer for a few hours; its all in good as long as we can agree as a community that we all make mistakes, one design choice is never automatically better than another, and the devs ultimately have the final say on where the game should go. All to say, I don't find an issue with the style of content you're criticizing but you're right that Joe and the other creators you mentioned really should change their tone and attitude with viewers, devs, and fans. Once again, thanks for making the video, hope you have a great day!

"Creating an overlong negative critical essay on the dangers of overlong negative critical essays?" That's my first thought ending this in depth video. I actually agree with almost every criticism here, but more than three or four points are repeated ten or twenty times. The horse is beaten to a pulp. Is this some sort of meta commentary? Criticizing in the format of the criticized? Your research is so in depth. Finding out Miyazaki has been misquoted could be a stand alone video in itself! But it's buttressed by your resentment for these popular creators and their shenanigans. I hope you can use these skills to discuss something to balance the scales towards positivity in the future. My fear is that in some ways this formatting can only add fuel to the fire.

personally my biggest problem with the emptiness of Elden ring isn't the lack of reward. its the lack of pace when compared to other souls games. i feel the game could probably retain a lot of the cool vistas while still being a little more dense/time efficient with the size of the game. But i don't really like the games open world nature to begin with so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

I remember tuning into one of Joe's livestreams when Cyberpunk 2077 came out because I was excited to see what he thought about the game. He spent the entire stream briefly playing through the intro missions for each life path while complaining the entire time about having to play the game in the first place. I don't think he ever played more of it than that or touched the award winning dlc that was released later. Quite the game critic I suppose.

I enjoy Joseph Anderson's content a lot, but he's intensely pedantic and stubborn. He really struggles to meet games halfway, he writes them off at a moment's notice and locks himself in to a strongly dismissive stance early on. 90% of time I'm mad bcuz of the current mental state I'm in and 10% of time I'm mad cuz of game's bullshit. how can I tell it was bullshit? well, really only when I'm playing TF2 cuz I have over 1600h in it and I just know the mechanics and ik they are sometimes just unfair (like getting repeatedly stun-locked by the scorch shot: it's an infuriating mechanic and it's absolutely BS bcuz the weapon itself isn't even that good; or how sometimes the head shots just don't land despite it being clearly a hit. why? well, ping differences, server lag, etc. and yet, despite there being reasons for it, it's still total BS. sth can be reasonable, as in - it has a cause and explanation, but still be simple af bullshit). but that 10% needs to be regularity in a match, when I am having a good day I won't crash-out just cuz one of my shots didn't hit. however, if my day's bad, that one miss will be enough for a crash-out (I usually have to take a break if I have gamer rage 3 times in one session, especially in short time-frame of like 15 minutes). and yk what? it's fine tbh. it's not really sth you can control, at best you can regulate the toll rage has on you, but it will happen, bcuz emotions aren't rational and they're purely instinctive, meaning - they will fucking happen, alright?

no, no, NOOOO. IT WAS ALWAYS RIGHT!! "journalists/critics can't play games" ok, "logic expert" here: 1:48:30 - that's not even a straw man, that's argumentum ad absurdum (I mean, it's kinda a straw man, but it relies on creating an absurd situation which cannot possibly happen, or is extremely unlikely to happen (yk, "absurd"), and thus, "haha, point and laugh - they're stupid!"). difference between a straw man and ad absurdum is mainly the probability, and, yk, ad absurdum has the point of making your oponent look to not just have weak arguments, but to be straight-up delusional. actually, you could 100% go bit by bit through those essays and point out all the logical fallacies/inconsistencies they have made, but it's neither worth it nor genuine to just go at it like that. they fail horribly when it comes to rhetoric, but their masters when it comes to eristics (yes, these things have an often overlapping meaning, however, usually when one uses rhetoric they try to be as genuine and fair as possible, meanwhile eristics has only the goal of beating your opponent at all cost and making yourself look like the absolutely wisest man in the field, all the while you almost solely rely on logical fallacies/inconsistencies or just appeals to emotion avoiding making genuine arguments based on any factual evidence, only to accuse your opponent of doing this exact thing and then gaslighting the audience into believe you to "say truth and only truth"). ik, you mentioned bad faith, I just had to throw in sth I had to learn, bcuz of what I study.

I think noah gervais is a lot worse in some of these aspects, when you count it all together there are literal hours across his videos of him coping with his insecurity by calling souls fans toxic and justifying to himself why he never learned how to play the game. Joseph is a lot more palatable imo.

I love ER and SotE. The world is so full of stuff and I love exploring and finding new things and seeing every little nook and cranny. Sometimes I just like to sit and view the world. Just walk around and take it all in. My only gripe though, is as neat as item descriptions are, I wish the game had a little more "cinematic" moments where the story could be delivered a little easier. I think its a common experience for players to just follow the guidance of grace and mindlessly kill whatever they find without much inkling of why. Im not saying they need to go full Armored Core with mission briefings and dialog being beamed in, but just a hair more than what's in the game would be nice. I do think SotE did a better job in this regard with the characters giving more exposition. My only gripe with ER, and its not even that major tbh. The item descriptions do the job, its just not exactly enjoyable for me to read all the items to know the bare minimum. Still game of the decade imo, and that's coming from an Armored Core fan boy.
