Why Your Guitar Soloing is STUCK (And How To FIX IT!)
Make a lesson about how to play out of the box and out of the key notes with each minor pentatonic box#1 thru box5. Most guitarist doesn't know how to play out of the box/not in the key notes while staying in the minor pentatonic box#1 thru box#5
Good idea!
Man. This is one of the best guitar videos I have ever watched. I’ve heard to have your thumb never go horizontal, but this makes so much more sense and actually has science behind it.
Dude, please play something rhytmical except those "Texas blues", so that we can see your good timing which you has developed because of these exercises. For example "the greatest dancer" by Nile Rogers.
ua-cam.com/play/PLE4w3zNlioJ1JHoJuAPFnv28A7w37MWQb.html&si=bkrbFuXn7rm8VtDE Here's a playlist of 28 other videos of me playing 😀
@@Jamsville honestly I kinda like your educational content, but your playing is not very beautiful in terms of accuracy and melodic language, some times it is just mess, we'll, we are just human, thank you anyway haha
Thanks for your opinion..... 😉 I'm not here to compete with guitarists trying to be flashy and impressive in an instagram video, I just do what I want and if you like it, great, and if you don't that's also completely fine by me.
Other UA-cam channels: Do what's comfortable! My wrist: 🥲
The phrase you played using the sus progreasion is used in Hotel California 🤔. Delighted 😊
nice. thanks.
my guitar teacher flipped out when he saw my thumb in your recommended position. it feels great but for some reason he wants me to hold it like a baseball bat
Depends when you’re playing but the baseball bat way isn’t bad either, if you’re bending you gotta do that. As long as you’re not flexing that muscle on the base of your thumb. Whatever you do don’t force your thumb in any position. That’s the takeaway from this lesson imo. If you have to force your thumb to go sideways or whatever, don’t do it. The whole idea is I’m letting my thumb go where it wants to naturally.
finally my wrist can relax.
I remember my guitar teacher telling me something like "don't pay too much attention to your thumb, wherever your hand feels the least ammount of strain, play that way"
This was a greqt great lesson. First timer but playing for long time. Subscribed.
Awesome! Welcome to the channel, Doug 😄 I’ve been making weekly lessons for over 4 years now, I’m sure there’s lots of others you would find useful!
This qualifies as an extremely well conceived voice leading workshop, demonstrated in an exceptionally relevant way. I feel like I just audited a master class in understanding AND applying theory. Really, Really useful stuff! Thank you. 😎👍⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks!!! So glad that you also recognize how many cool ideas you can pull from this to use in your own playing! 😃
i've been playing guitar for years and just now i saw this... this wrist pain is no joke. implementing this now
I've been playing guitar for decades and never though about this, its just hobby but as I got faster and faster I found 1 min into a somewhat complicated song my wrist would give agonising pain no matter how many months I played the song for (to practise!)
goat for thsi
been playing for 7 years i dont wanna relearn everything💀
awesome vid but you mite be interested to know "yesterday" was tuned down a full step to "d" and played in the "g" position. that makes it sound like it's in "f" but it's actually played in the "g" position.
Thanks! I think I learned about this afterward haha. I always wondered how he got that low D in the bass, but you can play the song and make it sound almost the same in standard tuning, so I just never bothered haha
Why not take that 1st C position and move it one fret up for B & move it back two frets for D & so on?
You could... but everyone does that already now don't they? 🙂 This way you're practicing all your positions and gaining a much deeper level of understanding of each key.
How do you bend strings?
That you do need to put your thumb over the neck of the guitar
Definitely going to give this a go! Recently got an Ibanez RG550 with a super wizard neck after playing Charvels and am getting a lot of tingling in my thumb area which goes away when I pick up the Charvel. Hope this works or will have to part ways with the Ibanez!
Its tough during shows not to play with added intensity. I find my fretting hand will start to cramp up after about 2 hours of non-stop play. I really need to work on having the guitar play itself more and hand position
This is exactly what I was missing. Thank you so much for this❤❤❤❤
Your style helps me slow down and work on my technique.
I'm very happy that you're finding the lessons helpful to you! Do you have any suggestions for other lessons you'd like to see? 🙂
Needed this! Thanks
You’re very welcome!! thanks for watching!
👍
Good to see you back ❤️
I'm gonna try it, I have been working on my speed for a GnR riff, and my wrist just started hurting, and I knew I was doing something wrong because it's not supposed to hurt like that.
Correct me if I’m wrong: C Dorian is Bb major starting from the 2nd note (of Bb major), with b6th note? WHY? Why not just Bb major (scale)? Man, theory to oneself is either comprehended as ‘1+1=2’ or it’s quantum physics… if you’re in the latter camp- “it’s enough to make a grown man wanna break down & cry”.
Because C Dorian is the sound you’ll have if you’re playing something that has a C bass note underneath you, with you selecting notes from the Bb major scale over it. For example, if the song you’re playing is in the key of Bb and you land on the ii chord, C minor. You’re not going to change the scale you’re playing, since it’s still in the key of Bb, so if you continue playing the Bb major scale, you’ll have the intervals of the Dorian sound over the C minor chord. Modes explain the reason it sounds different when you’re playing over the ii, iii, and vi chords respectively. Or why it sounds different playing over the I, IV or V chords. The context of each chord within the given key makes the notes from the scale relate differently, and therefore sound different over each of them. Check this vid out for further explanation/demonstration. ua-cam.com/video/vfM7sNZOGsg/v-deo.htmlsi=v3PfufMCVSmnYi0D
Man, using the weight of your arm and shoulder to apply pressure on the strings rather than using the fingers is such a natural solution. I can't believe I never thought of it. It seems so obvious now, after realizing. Thank you so much for the great tips!
Excellent concepts. Music, like any other form of art, has to be unpredictable yet relatable. You’re telling a story with the solo, you want to keep your listener engaged. You have to make space between the “words” and mix it up to keep it interesting. Putting these ideas into practice is necessary on ANY instrument!
Wow ! Very true
Am I right in thinking if I’m playing in A major, I would play the b minor scale which would give me the correct dorian mode to play over that A major key?
Almost, it’s the other way around. If you play an A major scale over a B minor chord, you’ll have a B Dorian sound.
@@Jamsville ok so if I’m playing a blues in A, what scale would I play over that to get the dorian sound- g major?
@@stealthbum34 exactly!
What key is it in?
Everything's in the key of C major

DO NOT do this, this is really bad advise and will mess you up in the long run, everybody else you find talk about this say thumb behind your middle finger and there’s a reason for that, again do not listen to this
And what's the reason for that?
@@Jamsville your hand isn’t balanced at all, your thumbs not supporting your fretting fingers so you have to press down a lot harder to fret a note and that’s gonna kill your speed, and with your thumb sideways like that you can’t stretch near as much, what your telling them to do is a crutch for beginners, it might help them out right now but as soon as they start to get better and do more advanced stuff it’s gonna hold them back, then they will have to go back and break a bad habit which is always hard to do
Lol that’s not true at all because I do it and I can play plenty fast and your thumb still puts counter pressure to support the fingers pressing down. On the contrary your thumb will get destroyed by flexing the muscle at the base of your thumb constantly and you will never be able to relax your left hand. Sometimes depending on what you’re playing you simply modify accordingly.
@@Jamsville the only reason all these people in these comments are complaining about they’re wrist hurting is because they are all beginners and they are squeezing the hell out of the fretboard, it’s a common thing, everyone does it at first, as they play and get a little better and start to loosen up it’s gonna stop hurting, you can watch 50 videos on this same topic and 49 of them are gonna say put your thumb behind your middle finger, and that 50th video is you saying the opposite, so I wonder is everyone else wrong, or are you wrong?
Oh you mean like how 49 out of 50 comments say that this helped them? You also didn’t address anything in my previous comment. Sometimes I still play stuff with my thumb behind the fingers if it’s necessary. But if it’s not necessary I don’t and i demonstrated why in this video, because flexing your thumb for no reason creates extra tension.

What's with Andy Sommers ?? Did he write Smoke On the Water 😂😂😂
This is what’s so fun about being a bass player. You can add flavor, I love it. I love playing the 3rd over power chords
Yeah bass plays the role that can make all the difference...👌
See thats how I've always wanted to play, with thumb to the side. But my guitar teacher back in highschool would get so angry. However it is so much more comfortable not only for my wrist but also my sideways thumb. Thanks!
Thanks!!
How often do you play a solo on one note ?? Sounds pretty cool anyway...maybe that's why Grandpa doesn't like de*th metal 😅 Taste n context
Soloing with one note is actually a great exercise for your creativity. You need to change the rhythms, dynamics, phrasing, slides, etc to keep it interesting.
@@Jamsville yeah...looking forward to your one note solo demo
I think I’ve done a video on it a while ago or at least included it as part of a lesson
@owenbruce4120 Much more common than you'd think. Many punk bands (Green Day especially) some Nashville bands for sure (a good amount on pedal steel guitar) amongst some forms of metal
@@markokrieger6324Right ! The Ramones have a song with a one note solo. But I don't remember the name of the song.
? You didnt play a c chord over a G chord you played a G note over a c chord. G is C's Dominant 5th, and literally in the C major chord. Im confused at what youre trying to say i guess?
He’s playing C note over a G chord, I assume it clashes because the C is a half step away from the B in the G Chord
This music has no sol😂
Yep, the sun is definitely not in this music
