2024 Knitting Intentions | Aussie Knitting Podcast Ep. 1
Thanks for posting this! As a new "podcaster" I have been curious about this as well and I also started with no intention of making money or becoming a sensation here 😂. I know that a while back, some of the videos (from other channels) were so overloaded with ad breaks (I counted one every ~30 seconds for a 30-minute episode), that I gave up and didn't watch any of them for a week or more. I have a feeling YT was testing some software/algorithm. If I enjoy a channel, expecting at least one ad at the beginning, middle, and end is tolerable. Beyond that I can get annoyed but then that depends on my mood as well!
So if all viewers were premium subscribers and saw zero ads, how do creators get paid then?
Personally, I don’t think you should have to do that pay extra….. I EXPECT to have to suffer through a few ads it is all part of the whole channel, AND WATCHING IT THROUGH YOU TUBE….it won’t stop me continuing to watch - I appreciate it takes hours of your time along with special equipment just to share the world of knitting - When I see what you produce - I am in awe - keep going as long as you are enjoying it and it works with your LIFE - good luck! :)
Interesting, i also watch young folk knits and I don't get as many ads as you said you get.🤔 I don't have premium or anything else, and all ads have had the option to skip. Is this regional? I'm from Finland. Anyway , thanks for the interesting video.😊
I would like more info on this subject
Love your videos, and your dress is so pretty. Whatever you choose to do, but love to see your knits and plans and ideas. ♥
I care more about the video itself and content and the personality of the creator than the ad amount. But fewer to moderate is better I guess? You are so fun to watch ❤️
How refreshing! Such honesty and openness, thank you so much for this video! We all wondered…. But didn’t ask. I NEVER WATCH THE ADS, that is my time to bend over and get something or adjust something - they are annoying buy part of the package - we get it - don’t worry - you are so refreshing - we just love coming back - Georgia in BC Canada
Thanks so much! I'm glad you enjoyed 🩷
I have been wondering how it affects you if I pay premium and therefore don't ever get ads. I don't spend much on myself, but think this expense is worth it for me, but what about you? Please could you comment. Thank you Anita
Thanks for sharing the info. Thrilled there is Premium - no ads! Keep up your lovely podcasts.
Premium sounds like a great option!
Also, living in the Southern hemisphere (South Africa), I love to hear about your knitting experiences.
A very interesting podcast! I always wondered what was in it for podcasters. Ads are a necessary evil in my opinion. As far as I can remember, there were only 2 or 3 in this whole episode, quite well spread out. I wish you well in your journey.
I have definitely stopped watching some creators because they had too many ads.
Here is the thing, I get that the ads help the podcasters and all but if you pay UA-cam you don't see ads so how does that work. I don't have cable TV since eons because i simply can't with the ads/commercials (I use streaming apps). So same goes for UA-cam. And for those where the podcaster do the ads themselves I have an addon that skips that too. It's not that I don't want to support the podcaster it's just that I rather support in another way rather than with ads.
An interesting perspective, thank you! I understand that if you watch on UA-cam premium (which I believe is the one with no ads), I would still get a financial incentive based on your watch time. From what I can see in my analytics, it seems to be a small percentage of viewers who watch from premium but it sounds like a great option!
A lovely update. It’s always a joy to spend a bit of time with you. As a parent of two now grown children, I giggled when your husband said “I don’t think she will notice”. Your knitting has just taught you a fundamental parenting lesson - let the little things slide. Enjoy this precious and fleeting time in your life! Lifting prayers for your sweet growing family.
I've just found your channel for the first time, and subscribed 😊 I'm so thrilled to see a knitter UA-camr in Brisbane! I live just up the sunny coast 😄 I love so many of the scarves you showed in this video; thanks for a lovely round up of patterns and thoughts on what yarn to use!
Hi Nadine, that was so informative and like finding out the secrets behind the process. I always knew youtube wasn't a money making for the majority of podcasters. I love your videos and look forward to more. Ads are annoying no matter when and it depends if I'm just sitting watching or making pottery or doing some other chores as to whether it's annoying that I can't skip. But ads are the way podcasters and youtube operates so we have to tolerate them (and get just a tad impatient, especially since sometimes those ads come at the worst time lolol! Lu in Brisbane @wildaboutyarn
Thanks so much for your comment! I feel the same when I watch other UA-camrs. If I'm pottering around doing chores I don't really mind if an ad plays but if I'm just watching and maybe knitting, they tick me off to no end!
I Pay UA-cam a monthly subscription to be a Premium member and I Never see an ad. Ever. So consider becoming a premium member. Free means you take what they serve you don’t have choices.
I think it would be much better to have less ads for sure. I pay for premium to avoid this problem. But if I had to watch ads, I would prefer to not be interrupted so often.
Thank you for the information. I appreciate you taking the time to do this video. I was not knowledgeable about the background of UA-cam at all. 🤔Looking forward to seeing your knitting next time.
❤❤❤
I don't care too much about bespoke. I get wanting to make money. I pay for premium though, and it's crazy to hear how many ads there are now!
Hi Nadine, interesting video, I’m in Australia too and have been paying for you tube premium for about 18 months, it’s about $17 per month. I hope some of the fee is sent to the people I watch . I was so fed up with the relentless advertising, Bridget R
Thanks for your comment, Bridget! I believe creators do still get a financial incentive when someone on UA-cam premium watches their content 🩷
My tolerance for ads is up to 1 every 5 mins of content. After that I just can’t watch even if it’s interesting. Also, this may be controversial but I actually like affiliate links if the creators are genuine. If they are pitching something I know is not great quality then of course, I would loose respect but I actually love recommendations and I figure none of us are forced to spend our money. So if you get paid, as an affiliate, for something you recommend and I really like it then I see that as a win for both and I’m happy to pay you something for your time and opinion.
Thank you for passing along your perspective, that's really good to know!
fyi I had 2 ad breaks in your video and one ad in each. My frustration with too many ad breaks is having to stop knitting and push skip.
You're too kind, thank you!! I'm actually not too sure on that point, but I watched a similar video from another creator and she said that it was the same regardless of whether you skip. So please feel free to skip away! 🩷 I Thanks for letting me know about the expensive yarns. I feel the same way when I see someone online who only uses super expensive yarns.
A couple years ago I paid to go ad free on utube. I never minded a couple of ads per video, but many had ads every couple of minutes, which I just wouldn’t watch.
Thanks Nadine. Very informative. I hope you can find a bespoke sponsor as that sounds like the perfect plan. Could I suggest a future knitting topic - cotton baby blankets.
Thanks Jenny that's a great topic suggestion!
I would probably go with an ad break about every 15 minutes. I was curious about this, so thank you. Your 5 most worn knits was my favorite.
Really interesting, Nadine. I love to learn how things work behind the scene. I can tolerate UA-cam ads, but I’m more annoyed by podcasters who push products (yarn, beauty products, etc.) than I am by those UA-cam ads.
Thanks so much - that was super interesting. As a parent of teenager (one of whom has designs on being a UA-camr) it is definitely worth having this info to help my kiddo set some realistic expectations around how this whole thing works. Also, thank you also for being willing to openly discuss the dollar amounts. The process behind it was different to what I expected, too. Thanks Nadine.
I'm so glad it was useful and interesting to you. You're always welcome to message me with any questions your teen has, very happy to help!
@ thank you! 😘
Thanks Nadine. It’s always interesting to learn of other UA-camrs experience of this platform. I went through a similar process but my videos are too specific to grow too big (but that’s the way I like it). I loved your Sophie scarf video and it prompted me to knit a few of these to give out as gifts. All the best with your channel and I love love love your recommendations for projects that always inspire me to check out what I can be knitting next. (I’m in a slump at the moment because we are in warmer weather. For whatever reason, my summer knits don’t have that same motivational kick as my winter knits….) sigh.
❤❤
I'm totally the same, I'm trying to pick my next summer project too and coming up blank! I'll have to have a hunt around for some good ones. I'll definitely have to check out your channel :)
@ thank you! That’s lovely. I’m getting tired of knitting socks and Christmas accessories. I’ll need to have a search on Ravelry too! Happy knitting. 🧶
I don't mind adds on videos gives me a chance to run and put on the coffee pot.
Thank you for sharing this valuable information to all of us. It just makes us more aware and on your side. Love watching your podcast too.
Thank you so much for this episode Nadine, so informative, you have inspired me to look into monetising my own podcast and given me just the right amount of food for thought on that subject. Researching tech stuff is not my strong point, so when someone can put all you need to know into a lovely little nutshell, it is really so helpful! And for my contribution on the subject of ads, like some of the other comments below, I would of course prefer to watch a podcast uninterrupted by ads, but don't mind one or two interruptions especially if there is an option to skip, and if there isn't, I tend to get up and pop the kettle on at that point! I learn such a lot from other contributors here on you tube, and if they are able to earn a little from one of two ads in order to put their content up here, then I feel that is a happy medium. I am also ok with affiliate links that are relevant to the content of the podcast - they can often be very helpful and can save people lots of internet-trawling/ decision making time and viewers can use them or not, of course, so it's totally optional. Thanks again for your time, content and information and for a lovely podcast, I look forward to the next knit catch-up x Kate
Thanks for your lovely comment, Kate. Please feel free to message or email me if you have any other questions about monetising - I'm happy to help if I can! Wishing you all the best!
I don’t like multiple interruptions during a video but accept that they are there and am happy to ‘suffer’ them for the youtubers I like (you for one 😊) Is it true that you get more income if we allow the advert to run through completely as opposed to skipping as soon as we can? If that is the case I would happily let them run. Just one thing though, please don’t spend all your ‘earnings’ on expensive yarns that are outside the budget for the majority of us. I find that is generally what makes me switch off completely 🫣
You're too kind, thank you!! I might have to do some research into whether there is a better incentive if viewers watch the whole ad, that's a great question. Thank you for the tip about expensive yarn, I have to admit I feel the same when I see some creators exclusively using yarns I couldn't afford for more than a special occasion!
Love the inside look on how it all works. I don’t mind a few ads and feel like that is helping you, the producer of the content but agree that it is good if they are thoughtfully placed. I have watched podcasts where an add interrupt a statement or section that seems very disruptive. I would like to know if you get paid more if we watch the ad vs. choose to skip it. On longer podcasts I try to use the ad time to get a new cup of tea and will just let the ad run. Would love to have a podcast about what other podcasts you enjoy, how you keep up with them all, etc.
Thank you so much for your insight and for the topic suggestion! I'm not 100% sure, but I saw another influencer say once that we get the same incentive regardless of whether you skip the ad or let it play through (thankfully as i think most people skip!!)
Actually, I've just done a spot of research and apparently there's only an incentive if people watch the whole ad or the first 30 seconds if it's a longer ad. I had no idea! Of course no pressure at all to change your viewing habits 🩷
Interesting Nadine! I have paid premium and had no idea how the ads work, had forgotten 😮 I wonder if influencers make anything for premium watchers?
I believe we do! Based on your watch time :)
Thanks very much for this Nadine. It's something I've always been interested in. I had actually started to try to find information about this simply because the ad situations on some channels are so annoying. I now understand that this might be something about which the podcaster is totally unaware. Your suggestion of two ad breaks during a video is very reasonable. Interestingly, I only had one during this video and one at the end. Something I've always been interested in is whether you can control the volume of ads. They would be so much less intrusive for late-night viewing if they weren't so loud.
I totally understand what you mean about the volume of ads. It's a bit of an assault on the senses! Unfortunately not something I can control!
I dont like ads however ad breaks are awesome for coffee breaks etc.
I have UA-cam premium so I have no ads. It is so worth it for me. PSA: if anyone decides to get premium, get it from UA-cam instead of Apple because it’s less expensive.
Hello Nadine, Thank you for your openness and honesty about UA-cam and how it works for all of you podcasters. Sounds like a bunch of rigmarole for you!!! As for me, I enjoyed way-back-when, when we didn’t even have to worry about things called ads on UA-cam. If I had a choice, I wouldn’t mind having you speak about your sponsor up front, as long as it was knitting or crafting related. What I really struggle with is selling jewelry, make-up, clothing or things that have no relation to what the podcast is about. Then maybe you could place an ad more toward the end, if that works? You are the only podcaster, that I am aware of, that has even talked about this and is genuinely interested in what your viewers think and our opinions. Thank you for that thoughtfulness.
Thank you so much for your lovely comment and for letting me know your views 🩷
Hi Nadine. This was so interesting to watch - thank you SO much for it - for taking the time to research it, present it to us and explain what you found! I have been wondering about ads on UA-cam generally and why sometimes there’s heaps and some channels have few, and one I watch weekly has no ads at all! I’ve been trying to work out if it’s the time of day I watch, the popularity of the channel, the recentness of the episode, and how much it’s controlled by the podcaster, with no conclusions lol . . . When the ads become so frequent they interrupt the flow of the video (like, every 5 mins!) I can’t watch it and stop watching that channel usually, sometimes permanently and l end up unsubscribing, which is disappointing as I love the content of the ones I watch. Since you’ve adjusted yours it’s a pleasure to watch! I couldn’t say what’s an acceptable quantity, but I tend to agree with a lot of the other comments that two ad breaks maybe, beginning and end, if we have to have any at all haha! Thank you again. Jen xx
Thanks for your comment, Jen! I'm so glad you've enjoyed my content more after the number of ads has come right down. Even after doing some research, I have to say the way UA-cam runs ads is still very much a mystery!
I personally prefer ads at the beginning and end of the video with maybe one ad break mid video. Thank you for sharing this information!!
I always check to make sure my videos don’t have too many adds after you posted about some of your videos having too many. So thanks for the heads up. I like to manage them and usually delete one of the suggested adds. This was a great video! Thanks for sharing! 🥰
I'm so glad you enjoyed!! 🩷
Thank you for information , I enjoyed learning and was thing about doing a UA-cam
Thanks for sharing.....interesting to hear the behind-the-scenes situation!
I always love watching you and I have to say this video was much easier to watch as for me, it had one add at the start and one add at the end. I don’t mind podcasters doing bespoke ads because I just fast forward through them lol
I'm SO glad to hear that! 🩷 Hahah I have to admit I do the same!!
Wow Nadine! This is such a thorough and informative video. 26:28 While I don’t love ad breaks, I can appreciate that even hobby creators have expenses and put a great deal of effort into their videos. Watching/ dealing with ad breaks is the least I can do to enable you and my other favorite UA-cam channels continue to be able to offer free content. I loved the Sophie scarf video!
Thank you so much!
Interesting info. Thank you. I also pay for premium You Tube. I used to get frustrated with ads on the podcasts I watched but I also like being able to download videos to watch offline especially when traveling.
This was fascinating! I like the wide range of topics you cover in your videos (and I’m looking forward to the baby knits videos!) I pay for premium, so I never saw your ad situation. I will say I don’t mind the odd bespoke ad in the video but I will 100% skip it every time!
I really don’t like the bespoke ads. I fast forward through them, they seem to be long and annoying. The other ads I don’t like either, but they seem shorter. I’ve heard that if you let the ads (not bespoke ones) run through the podcaster gets more money so I try to let them run and I do other things while they’re going so I don’t have to watch the ads- hope that makes sense
That's so kind of you to watch through ads! I agree with you on the bespoke ads and tend to fast forward through them myself as well. From the limited offers I've had from companies, it seems that some of them will mandate how long you have to talk about the product and specify that it has to be at the start of the video (as viewers tend to drop off rapidly as the video progresses).
