    I like it! I find my characters tend to surprise me and sometimes react to each other in ways I never foresaw, but when I get to that point in the writing process, it makes utter sense and I wonder how I never saw this would happen xD It really feels like they're writing themselves and doing what they want sometimes, lol.

    I don't get how the Queen and King types are different. I'm not sure how you could write a story about just the Queen type, but not the King (like you can with the previous two) Would you say that most of Aragon's story is a Queen story? The main issue seems to be whether he'll accept being the the king, not whether he'll die or personally defeat the evil. That's more Frodo's story.

    Interesting idea and perhaps you can apply it correctly, but I see a big flaw in it for many. That problem is that people do not have a single theory of control but many. One for nasty teachers, another for nice teachers, a third for parents, a fourth for older siblings, a fifth for younger ones, etc. Control with one may be not being controlled, for another controlling, for a third ignoring as not worth the time. People who grow up poor and really know the value of a dollar, euro, or whatever, are often the most generous. It is people who do not know the value of one dollar who are often the most greedy. And what is worse, relationships have dual control. The protagonist never completely controls any relationship, period. And third, a person who centers their life around money need not learn a lesson involving money. Why can't he or she learn a lesson of being courageous? Money has meant he/she has never had to risk their own life and now they have to. No hero will accept the quest and reward. At the end they can still see the world thru a money lens, but believe more in their own value beyond the value of their wallet.

      Story characters are NOT people. In order to write compelling characters it necessitates specificity. We don’t usually become who we are in one defining moment, but if we want to create great characters, we first have to model them vividly and that means defining them precisely. Furthermore, the PRECISE Theory of Control that a character uses to define their world view is also MEANT to be overcome (or in the case of a tragedy, failed to overcome).

    • @posefile8873
      @posefile8873 2 місяці тому

      @@futurestoryteller A characters Theory of Control isn’t a mere “trait”, it is the basis upon which they have built their world view. Within the context of a single story arc, a protagonist has ONE MAJOR FLAW to overcome… not two, not three, not twenty. As a characters Theory of Control points directly to their FLAW, you need specificity in this aspect, or else your audience will wonder “just what the hell is this thing supposed to be about?” It doesn’t mean that your story telling should be blatant, or that there shouldn’t be things for the audience to discover… but they most certainly shouldn’t be overly broad and cliche.

      @@futurestoryteller The flaw simply points to the place a character needs to change for catharsis to occur... Want vs need works too. A straight revenge story without any depth to the character creates its catharsis simply through the act of revenge. I agree with the other commenter. What you're describing is action, which is event change. This is about character change, which must be somewhat specific and certainly intentional. (Edit: didn't want to come across as a jerk)

    • @aSnailCyclopsNamedSteve
      @aSnailCyclopsNamedSteve 2 місяці тому

      Well, my protagonist is fully developed (secondary characters may appear 2D, but that is only due to their limited role). The ultimate character arc is that the person needs to learn to take charge of her life, which is a need, not a want. The wants are to stay hidden and to find a way to survive (source of money) which means learning a foreign language, which means she needs to learn to accept the foreign culture. On the surface, it looks like the loving a foreign culture is the main need so that when she takes charge of her life in the last chapter, it seems logical, but not predictable. Thus, you could say the visible flaw is that that she does not love foreign cultures and that does affect all her relationships, but the reason why she does not is perhaps because they threaten her autonomy (because she has none). If I stopped at the love a foreigner level, then it would be a simple finding something attractive situation or profiting from others situation. Give me a tasty sausage and I'll love you forever. And that is pretty shallow, in my opinion.

    I really enjoyed this video about theory of control, but I actually think taking away the protagonist's ship might lead to a dead end story. An example is the father of my gf got into a motorcylce accident. Thankfully he survived but his lega was injured and he couldn't ride his motorcycle. At first he was grateful to even be alive, but then when he realized he can't ride motorcylces anymore, he becaome an insufferable prick, and became entirely dependent on his daughter to take care of him now. I can't see a similar story turning out well, due to the fact the only character arcs a person like that can go through is that they A. Are just asshats to everybody until he gets his ship back, then he regresses back to his original theory of control or B. He falls into a spiral of depression realizing he'll never sail again. Maybe he learns to live with it, but it's a copium ending as we all know he really would rather have his freedom and his old theory of control back.

    • @posefile8873

      The vid maker is not defining Theory of Control specifically enough. A character’s TOC is connected to their Origin Damage… and that is something that generally happens early in life AND it is specific: The storyteller should know specifically when and how the ORIGIN DAMAGE happened to their central characters before they start writing. It’s not enough to be general and say “It’s because their parents didn’t love them enough”; such vague thinking can lead to vague characters.

    • @friendboy10
      @friendboy10 2 місяці тому

      Those are not the only two arcs...and these are characters, you choose how they react. Just think of how many people took an awful event in their life and came out the other end better for it, not because their life necessarily improved on its own, but they learned to thrive because of this. Any sort of motivational speaker whose speaking about something bad that happened(suicide of a family member, their disabilities, etc.) is an example of this. Just because one person in your life ended up like that doesn't mean everyone who experiences something similar is going to react that same way. That's just such a close minded and narrow way of thinking. Learning to fill a gap created by the absence of the main thing a person used to achieve [insert their typical goals] is a core thing people have to get over when said ship is taken. Whether that ship represented freedom, pride, power, or what have you, having a character figure out how to fill that void without the ship is paramount to showing off a completely new aspect of a character. Or...they don't get over it. And they suffer for it as a result until they do.

I don't know if it's because of my particular flavor of autism or what, but I have no idea what I'm writing about until I've explored the characters well enough that I understand their histories and traumas. Usually, the emotional core of my stories has something to do with, alienation and abandonment, particularly parental abandonment. I won't go into the reasons for that, but I have to write into it. I still appreciate videos like this for articulating What's going on under the hood.
