Bantry Bay Middle Harbour, Sydney Garigal National Park Still Resembles Its Original State #hiking
We went for a hike at the Garigal National Park on a Winter Saturday morning. Little that we know that the highlight of the day, Bantry Bay is a jewel in the crown of Middle Harbour. It was written that it’s the last deepwater bay in the harbour still resembling its original state. How amazing was it that we got to traverse back in time to see this historical place.
It was published in Manly Daily on September 22, 2016 that by late 1890s picnic grounds were established by John Nelson at Bantry Bay and nearby Flat Rock, where dance halls and pavilions catered for those seeking refreshment or entertainment, serviced on Sundays and public holidays by ferries from the city.
However, despite a storm of protest, including from the newly-created Warringah Shire Council, the land was dedicated for explosives storage in 1908. Bantry Bay was chosen because of the ease of transport by water and its seclusion.
After the second world war, the difficulty of site access and the cost of maintenance led to the site’s closure in 1964 and since then the site has mostly been allowed to deteriorate.
From the lookout at Bluff, we could get a splendid overview of Bantry Bay with its tiny wharf and old explosive buildings scattered around.
We took a short break at the Bantry Bay picnic area where there are a table, benches and also a drop toilet. The surroundings are peaceful with many birds flying around and we also saw a man fishing on the wharf. The water is so crystal clear and calm too.
What an amazing piece of history that we visited on that day. Thanks to Frank for organising the walk for us.

The Penrith’s Great River Walk, Bridge to Bridge, Along the Mighty Nepean River Catching the Sunset
Переглядів 55828 днів тому
The sky was finally clear after raining in the morning. The seven of us decided to go for a walk at the Penrith’s Great River Walk in the afternoon. With lunch and drinks packed, we drove to the Cassola Place, Penrith to park our cars along the road. It was a Saturday so there was plenty of space to park along the road. We started our walk from there where it is very close to the Nepean River. ...
A WINDY Day Circuit Walk from La Perouse to Cape Banks in Kamay Botany Bay National Park #hiking

It was a very windy day when the five of us went for the La Perouse to Cape Banks Circuit Walk in Kamay Botany Bay National Park. After the walk, we found out from the news that the wind gust was so strong that flights were delayed and one of the LRT trams was blown off track. Thankfully we completed the walk safely. Wind aside, this is one of the most beautiful coastal walks in Sydney and it’s...

On a sunny Winter day, we decided to take the public transport for a visit to Palm Beach. We caught the B1 Line Bus from Wynyard Station until the last stop at Mona Vale. From there, we then took the route number 199 Bus to Palm Beach. It was quite a long ride of one and a half hours but we enjoyed looking out to see the places that the two buses passed by. We stopped at the Governor Phillip Pa...

We were monitoring the Hourly 4 Day Tide Forecast of the Risk Level Chart for several days before embarking on the Figure 8 Pools walk from Garrawarra Farm. We made sure that we went on the day that had long hours of low tide to give us ample time to explore. The risk chart can be found at th...

We picked a week day to spend at Caves Beach located at Swansea peninsula. It is a popular beach for family to visit especially during weekends. There wasn’t as crowded on a weekday when we visited. Low tide was at 4.30pm on the day we were there so we spent the earlier part of the day enjoying the lovely beach. We pitched a pop-up tent, ate our packed lunch and just relaxing while waiting for ...

As a Boy Scout (1970's) I did many hikes to Pindar Cave. Such good memories. There's also Pindar Spring which is also nearby. A big pool which is a great swimming hole on a hot summer's day. We also did an excavation at Pindar Cave of a collapsed cave roof (probably not NPWS approved) to reveal remains of bats and other animal skeletons. Such an amazing place, so hard to access. Wonadabine is also very interesting. Did many hike around the area east to Mt Wondabine, which is a local landmark, and has a reported height of only 216m, but has some amazing view of the local area from the top. Bullet hole in the trig station. Just watch out for death adder snakes along the trail (so well camouflaged, you just can't see them unless you're looking). I love that new Australians appreciate our heritage.
