- The sky was finally clear after raining in the morning. The seven of us decided to go for a walk at the Penrith’s Great River Walk in the afternoon. With lunch and drinks packed, we drove to the Cassola Place, Penrith to park our cars along the road. It was a Saturday so there was plenty of space to park along the road. We started our walk from there where it is very close to the Nepean River. We had a quick picnic lunch before beginning our walk.
We walked along the river and then under the Western M4 Bridge. It was quite impressive to see the architecture and huge towering pillars supporting the M4 bridge. Afterwards, we walked back up to the other side of the river passing Jamison Creek and Huntington Reserve on the way up to a striking pedestrian bridge.
The name of the pedestrian bridge is Yandhai Nepean Crossing. The word Yandhai is derived from Darug language and means “walking in past and present”. It is the longest single clear-span footbridge in Australia. The bridge has an overall length of 258m, with the main span over the river being 200m long. It was opened in 2018 and is part of the 6.4km Bridge to Bridge loop section of the Great River Walk. Walking on the bridge we could see the stunning views up the river to the Blue Mountains.
As we were walking along the track, we spotted a beautiful paddle wheeler moored at a wharf. It is the Nepean Belle paddle wheeler and it will be nice to go on a river cruise in her. We will do that another time.
Overall, Penrith’s Great River Walk is an easy and relaxing 8km walk. There are also plenty of picnic spots, children playgrounds and cafes along the way.
We had a wonderful time walking and enjoying the sunset along the mighty Nepean River.

Such a chill scenic place to walk in... the river current looks rather rapid though....
