Peakbagging the Bitterroot: Totem Peak
My first big mountain outing since a major back injury last year. Totem peak is a rarely visited peak far up the Fred Burr drainage. Climbed with Stefan and Forest on a perfect late June day. Back is feeling it today!

Peakbagging the Bitterroot: Whites Mountains and Whites East
Переглядів 4511 місяців тому
We had a strong group of Laurel, Josh, and Anne, and myself. Started at lake Como, and headed up the rock creek trail. Laurel and Josh were interested in this peak as it is on the P2K list, and I was looking to double dip on two Bitterroot 9kers. Once off trail, the climb involved some typical nasty bushwhack, then boulder/talus hopping to a lovely little tarn. We tagged Whites mountain first, ...
Peakbagging the Bitterroot: Bare Peaks (Redemption)

The same group of six (and dogs) headed on our way back to Nelson lake. We had stayed there last Fourth of July, and Stefan and I had been denied the Bare Peak SE summit by 50 feet due to a rapidly developing thunderstorm. Two of the ladies ended up needing to turn around early, and Stefan was only staying for the day. We quickly set up camp at Nelson, and then quickly got up to the ridge of SE...
Climbing the Mission Mountains: Kakashe Mountain

Back to back weekends of peak bagging in the Missions. After summiting McDonald peak last weekend, Stefan and I headed back in, from the west side. We parked at the Mission falls trailhead, and immediately began bushwhacking up to the ridge of Kakashe. Once on the ridge, we found the surprisingly good shape trail with numerous drawn out switchbacks as it gains elevation. Once right below point ...
Climbing the Mission Mountains: McDonald Peak

McDonald peak is as challenging of a climb as you can read on any trip report. A combination of bushwhacking, steep off trail, thigh high creek ford, and snow climb requiring ice axe an crampons. We camped at the beautiful cliff lake, then made an early start to climb McDonald via the south slope. 40 mph wind gusts made the snow quite firm on the climb up, but softened up for a pleasurable boot...
Upper Grant Creek Traverse of the Rattlesnake Wilderness
Переглядів 140Рік тому
A very enjoyable traverse of the five peaks surrounding the Grant Creek Basin (Stuart, Mosquito, Sanders, Murphy, Point Six.) Stefan and I dropped bikes off at Snowbowl, then drove to the Ravine trailhead. Made it up quickly to Stuart (2.5 hours), Mosquito (3.5 hours), and Sanders (4.5 hours). From there our pace slowed quickly route finding the ridge over to Murphy. We finally figured it out, ...
Peakbagging the Bitterroot: Pyramid Buttes

A fun trail run/scramble up the Peterson lake trail, past Duffy and Holloway lakes. Scrambled up to the east butte, then traversed over to the middle and west. Beautiful mid-October day.
Peakbagging the Bitterroot: North Lost Horse North (9ker)
Переглядів 52Рік тому
My second attempt at this seldom visited summit. This time around, Elizabeth joined me and we approached from the North Lost Horse drainage. The trail disappears after ~ 1.5 miles, and quickly becomes a bushwhack, sidehill, and boulder hop up a very steep south ridge. The day before's rainfall made things soggy, and the black lichen super slippery! Very slow moving for sure. My previous attempt...

A great traverse to reach five summits! East, Middle, and West Camas Peaks, Camas and Lion Points. Beautiful early fall day with Stefan.
Climbing the Mission Mountains: Daughter of the Sun

A beautiful end of summer climb with Laurel and Josh. Hiked into Turquoise Lake, then up the ramp underneath the north face of Daughter of the Sun to the western saddle. Zig zag along the south face, climb a 15 foot crack with boulder moves (although safe with no exposure), to a summit with phenomenal views!
Peakbagging the Bitterroot: South Heavenly Twin
Переглядів 72Рік тому
Bitterroot 9ker number 20 for me! Our first real smoke of the season (on September 3rd!) finally settled into the area. We had initially looked at running up Big Creek trail to bag Ranger Peak, but a new fire near the lake closed the trail further up. So we opted for South Heavenly Twin instead! The creek drainage we went up surprisingly still had running water in it, making for some dangerousl...
Climbing Glacier National Park: Reynolds Mountain

Reynolds was a nice end cap to four days of climbing in Glacier! This is a nice introductory climb for someone to experience the type of terrain you typically find on Glacier mountains. The hardest part is probably finding a parking spot at Logan Pass!
Climbing Glacier National Park: Mt Wilbur

This was an attempt of one of the technical peaks in Glacier. We got up the the beginning of the Thin Man's Pleasure route, but collectively decided to turn around. Two bull moose, a standoff between a young male grizzly and a sow with cubs, bighorn sheep, and ptarmigans still made for a wonderful outing. I will be back!

Climbing one of Glacier's 10k peaks! South slope approach, with two grizzlies near the summit eating moths and napping on the snow field. A must climb in the park!

McDonald has been on my list since before I came across this video, and this certainly helps keep it firmly on the to-do pile! I love hitting the ultras when I can and I love real wilderness even more, regardless of elevation. Thanks for the vid; hopefully I can use it to convince some amigos to come take this one on with me sometime. :)

of all the peaks i've climbed in Glacier Park (25+), this is one i never desired to do again. The view is pretty good overlooking Cracker Lake and opposite the Garden Wall, but all-in-all? It doesn't rank in my top 10. it's not technically difficult, but 3000 ft of scree isn't exactly an inviting prospect for that view. I'll do Reynolds or Bishop's Cap for much better views and much more firm climbing. i've done Reynolds 14 times because the view is far superior. glad you did it. glad you got to see it. but i expected more..... Siyeh just didn't deliver compared to other peaks thanks for the video and the memories.

This is truly amazing and inspiring. The adventurous spirit is just firing from this video and it really is so relaxing to watch, but also makes my feet itchy. As someone who has been struggling with a lot of stress in the recent months, this video really inspires me to get out of the comfort and make something out of my life again. Thank you and wishing you the best on the journey :)

Been there. Done that. Most amazing experience in my life. It was in 1980, before wolves were reintroduced to Yellowstone, so it must have been coyotes we heard singing at night. The mosquitoes were nothing for us denizens of the Great Lakes. We should have paid better attention to the vertical dimensions on our map. We got as far as you did, with the intention of going to Gannett Peak (the tall boxy one). The horizontal distance wasn't far at all, but we would have had to go down several hundred feet, then up again, even more, then back to our base camp near yours by the lake. Too much. We only gave ourselves a single day to hike back to the parking lot (22 miles). Easy, because it's all downhill, right? Wrong! Every step was a shock to the feet and gave downward momentum to the weight on our backs. Don't do it! We hiked 2 days to get to that base camp. We should have done the same for our return trip. The pain was well worth it and forgotten, but never the sights or the memories of the exhilaration.

I was in Titcomb Basin in early August, but never got up onto the surrounding peaks. You got some beautiful shots from the heights! While we were there, we had a major thunderstorm roll in and outran it (mostly) back to Little Seneca Lake. It mostly just cooled us off. You are right about the mosquitoes, especially around the lakes. I was praying for wind -- any time it slacked off they were swarming. Still, it was by far the most beautiful place I have ever hiked.
