History Reclaimed Conference 2024
This film provides edited highlights of the History Reclaimed conference in Cambridge in June 2024. It's divided into several sections.
In our first session the notable historian and biographer, Andrew Roberts, Lord Roberts of Belgravia, talks about Churchill's achievements and his recent reputation in the work of critical historians.
In our second session, three leading educationists - Dr. Joanna Williams, Dr. Alka Seghal Cuthbert and Katharine Birbalsingh, the headmistress of the acclaimed Michaela Community School in Wembley, London - discuss the present state of, and likely future threats to, the History curriculum in schools.
Following this, Lord Roberts presented the History Reclaimed Book of the Year Prize to Sir Noel Malcolm of All Souls College, Oxford, for 'Forbidden Desire in Early Modern Europe' (Oxford University Press). Our film includes Sir Noel's speech about his book on receiving the award.
Our third conference session was a lecture by Professor Frank Furedi, the noted sociologist and commentator, drawn from his forthcoming book, to be published by Polity Press, entitled 'The War Against the Past', an analysis of the current fashion for seeing the past through the eyes and moral standards of the present.
The final session of the conference and of the film was devoted to the presentation of History in our museums and galleries and by Britain's heritage organisations. It featured Cornelia van Der Poll and Zewditu Gebreyohanes, who have both worked for the organisation Restore Trust (which is critical of the National Trust), and the historian and horticulturalist, Ursula Buchan.
For those unable to attend the conference we hope this film gives you an insight into our conference and into the purpose of History Reclaimed. For those who were in Cambridge, we trust you enjoy a second opportunity to hear some excellent speeches and discussions.

Our Mission
The abuse of history for political purposes is as old as history itself. In recent years, we have seen campaigns to rewrite the history of several democratic nations in a way that undermines their solidarity as communities, their sense of achievement, even their very legitimacy.
These ‘culture wars’, pursued in the media, in public spaces, in museums, universities, schools, civil services, local government, business corporations and even churches, are particularly virulent in North America, Australasia and the United Kingdom. Activists assert that ‘facing up’ to a past presented as overwhelmingly and permanently shameful and guilt-laden is the way to a better and fairer future. We see no evidence that this is true. On the contrary, tendentious and even blatantly false readings of history are creating or aggravating divisions, resentments, and even violence. We do not take the view that our histories are uniformly praiseworthy-that would be absurd. But we reject as equally absurd the claim that they are essentially shameful.
We agree that history consists of many opinions and many voices. But this does not mean that all opinions are valid, and certainly none should be imposed as a new orthodoxy. We intend to challenge distortions of history, and to provide context, explanation and balance in a debate in which dogmatism is too often preferred to analysis, and condemnation to understanding.

The Royal Navy's Campaign Against Slavery - Prof. Andrew Lambert
I cannot support Dr. Elizabeth Weiss more in this.
Interesting that she totally omitted enslavement by Jews. And Jewish slave traders.
"Hi, We're here to help you." "The removal of the Cherokee was caused by a small handfull of Cherokee leaders." What ungrateful heathens. Where is the gratitude? You guys be cookin' the books.
I can listen to Jeremy Black talk about just about anything. My first encounter with him was the documentary he did on the industrial revolution, which I thought was just brilliant. I think it was in that video where he explained how the English system was at such a bigger advantage than the French system and how that kept the French back from progressing in the industrial revolution like the British did. I don't even know - I don't think I can even put it into words how he explained it. He explained that it was inherent in the centuries of how each monarchy functioned and how each monarchy ruled over their country. The only problem I have with Mr. Black is that he can be so rude at times. It is obvious that he is a very impatient man and that is fine. Unfortunately, it's not fine when it is being rude. Of course, this is very minor stuff. The man is brilliant he has written over a hundred books and like I said I can listen to him forever.
without the graves then its what? school boiler furnace Organized extinction stealth slow boil frog.... like i said a court mandate from a military trade embargo where your kids abducted into reeducation camps to remake history of the land is empty and your feudalism wars respected ..... what would demand from a china emperor military trade embargo with a constition awarding title to all land to its hiers under a canada act mandate to operate a kangaroo court
the odds are in disposing of bodies was done in the schools boiler furnace about the size of a train boiler to water heat the building....... <<<< too many missing kids where they grant money to find them KNOWING what happened ... LIKE DO YOU THINK they were that stupid if the did not have a good size boiler they would of ended up in graves and you can find pictures of kids digging thier own graves.... all done BY COURT MANDATES LIKE RAN AWAY your faith is doomed ....... stealth extinction polices.. WHAT is GOING ON .... finding the excuses to validate your pass and institutions.... 7 seals not to brake in 7 steps of time... TIME IS UP feudalism = Indian act and under the military embargo you my hires rights to all titles of land a MAYOR roundup.... LIKE THIS CHINA runs a military granting rights over all land and run reeducation camps with its new COURT..... embassy fornication scams
Cultural assimilation like the term genocide is something that can and often does cut both ways , the American experience is just one of many throughout history. Just a grain of salt if you will ? 🌎✌️🌍
The indigenous people people have to live in their victim mentality or they don't have anything to go on. Anyone with reason can expect that they will or could possibly lie to make the story favorable for their endeavors. We need to resist this openly and stand for the historical truth.
She seems to reject simple bad guy good guy narratives about victims and oppressors . I wonder how she feels about Feminism. I would like to hear her opinions on it.
How many bones did she find?
Most illuminating, HR, thank You! My only regret is that I didn't see this in real time because it would have been fun to learn how Your guest speaker got involved with this vein of research.
Excellent presentation Ms Weiss. Your courage is admirable. Is it true the Māori ate all the Miori in Aus/NZ?
Far too few views and likes - what the heck? What I liked best about this highly instructive and fascinating talk is Elizabeth Weiss' suggestion that in dealing with the woke brigade, among other things you need a good sense of humour. I hadn't heard that one before. ❤
There's two sides to each story.but if you want any credibility stop misusing the word WOKE. It means beware of danger. Caring love etc
I believe his argument is based around the issues rising out of giving reparations, but does not argue that we should not. The concept that national minorities of different ethnicities too took roles in the condoning of slavery, that it is complex to decide how much money is due, and that we cannot decide who is to be blamed and who is painted a victim only reinforces how complex the British Empire's slavery was, and by no means serves as a barrier to admit responsibility in condoning slavery regardless of a moral consciousness or not.
I'm from New Zealand. Now the Maoris complain and want the heads back.
Literally nobody denies these things, "oh they practiced slavery" so what? This woman cant go more than a couple sentences without the strawman fallacy.
History, the great equalizer.
William Ellison, born into slavery in 1799 (slave name April) would purchase his freedom and among other things own a plantation.
I hope everyone watching this will actively challenge the grifters calling for reparations. Effectively the Europeans have created the modern world, but there is never any gratitude shown or spoken.
Plenty of envy though. Life’s an itch!
We aren't grifters. We are the descendants of the PEOPLE who were enslaved for generations. GENERATIONS. How about stop enslaving other people to cook, clean, farm, and do your own work?
Something avoided. Slavery is part of Christianic law and always will be. No Christianic country abolished slavery without Middle Eastern influence. The closest is Russia, and the king had an Iranian advisor telling him to abolish slavery. To quote a 21st century Christianic scholar, slavery is Christianic and anybody who says different is ignorant of Christianity. So, no British emperor condemned slavery. Indeed, the king of Spain objected to Moroccan pressure for them to stop slaving saying very clearly it was not against the Beble our Jesus’s teachings.
We should "repatriate" provided Native Americans return automobiles, electric power, modern plumbing, computers and iphones, etc etc.
I howl at the whole "small pox blankets" canard. If white people had been handing out smallpox blankets to and fro, they would've spread small pox to themselves. Smallpox still killed Europeans at that time, maybe not as many as the Natives, but they still died. Smallpox spread throughout the New World as it had the Old World and it wasn't done deliberately.
YT kept this out of their algo, 1.2K views?
Every race and culture under the sun since the beginning of time has invaded, conquered and enslaved.
Basically, people love the fruits and hate the farming.
Northwest coast tribe name is pronounced something like, "quack-you-tul".
How typical, a couple of white Europeans "discussing" the impact of colonization.
Typical thing for a racist to say.
The war criminal Tony Bliar is also a member of the Fabian Society whose logo is a wolf in sheeps clothing. Their long term aim is to infiltrate all of British society and destroy it from the inside and then rebuilt it into a Socialist utopia. Two Tier Keir Starmer is himself, along with many Labour MPs all members .
If it turns out that no bodies are found, or very few, what about the emotional stories from the Indigenous elders who talk about the children who went missing? How could they not have been accounted for? The sad stories of assimilation attempts by the (insane) Catholic Church are terrible, but a large part of this story is based on buried bodies and the term "genocide". The truth needs to come out, the sooner the better, regardless of what is found. Anyone claiming genocide must be forced to prove that claim.
The Canadian government has provided 350 million to Indigenous groups for GPR. No bodies have yet been found.
It's not just the Indians. There is genocide going on to the American people. Their killing us with medicines, cat scan dye, MRI'S, and telling people they have cancer and they don't. That, with artificial intelligence, robots, taking over, and replacing humans. Chips, in cars and on people. The mark of the beast, as written in the book of revelation, by John of Patmos.
Fake History for white supremacists.
Dr. Paul mentions Andrew Jackson's defiance of the SCOTUS, but its interesting to note, that when reading exactly what Jackson wrote at the time regarding the Indian Removal Acts, and what his early biographers wrote, that Jackson did not hate Indians. In fact, the contrary is true, having been raised on the frontier around Indians, Jackson actually understood and knew Indians, and he was concerned that the Indians needed to be relocated for their own safety and protection because he saw, that despite what Jefferson and others had hoped for, the Indians could not assimilate quickly enough to keep pace with the influx of new immigrants expanding into Georgia. The civilized nations were being economically displaced by an expanding nation. The removal of the Cherokee was caused by a small handful of Cherokee leaders, who against the will of their own Chief, John Ross, signed a treaty so they could gain new land in Oklahoma. Jackson also believed that the voters in Georgia were not being represented by the SCOTUS, and he believed the President was closer to the wishes of the people because the President was elected by all of the people, as opposed to the life appointed courts. Nevertheless, Jackson carefully specified how the Indians should be cared for during the relocation process and that any abuse of the Indians by army personnel would not be tolerated. The indifference and abusive acts inflicted by the army during relocation (the trail of tears) lay at the feat of the Congress and the Presidential administrations that followed the Jackson administration who actually created the trail of tears; not Jackson. Andrew Jackson was demonized by his political enemies very early on, and it has persisted, and like Richard Nixon, politics often writes the popular perception of history, and Jackson is not given credit were credit is due.
So the killing of Native Americans for 400 years, both by the army and by civilians, didn't actually happen? Come on - I'm sure the conservatives, and some others who would like to relieve their consciences, are eager to believe you. But we not only killed them in many wars, but millions died from diseases the "settlers" brought over from Europe, like tuberculosis, measles, Bubonic plague, smallpox, symphilis and others. No matter how many lies you tell, and how much you want to circumvent the truth, the fact remains that we DID COMMIT GENOCIDE AGAINST THE NATIVE AMERICANS. Not only did we commit genocide against them, but after the military campaigns against them ended in the 19th century, we forced them onto reservations. Today, discrimination against them continues, in the "voter ID" laws Republicans imposed on every state with signficant Native populations in order to suppress the Native vote. Why don't you address the "Indian schools" that we created and forced Native children to attend, in which they were forced to renounce their Native heritage and beliefs. These "schools" were houses of horror, in which there was a high incidence of suicide. We also have continued to deny the rights granted to Natives by treaty (access to water, fishing rights, etc.). Canada was much better in their attitude toward the Natives than the U.S. was. You're like a dishonest criminal defense lawyer, who uses every questionable "fact" and theory to try to cast doubt on the prosecutions's case - like O.J. Simpson's lawyers did (and got him an unust acquittal for). You don't even know whether some of the 'statistics" you're citing - like the Native population in 1840 - are even remotely true. Your attempt to place the blame for "misstating" that it was genocide on the New Left is comical. Believe it or not, liberals aren't responsible for everything negative that has occurred. It's likely that the term "genocide" has only become more popular in recent decades because until the 70's the genocide against the Native Americans was overlooked and ignored. Certainly, no one in our high schools was taught that it occurred. Saying there was only "one Hiroshima" in Hispaniola instead of 50 is just a cheap attempt to try to discredit the truth by trying to minimize its extent. "One Hiroshima" is still genocide, particularly if it was carried out along with other massacres all over the country. Cherry picking various tragedies all over the continent and saying they were exaggerated is your attempt to hide the fact that there were massacres all over the country for centuries, which in fact constitutes genocide. You continually place total trust in historical accounts that give some slight evidence to your predisposition, while dismissing accounts that contradict your version. Maybe your next "scholarly" project should be trying to "disprove" that slavery existed in the United States.
I could believe that 10-20 bodies are at the Kamloops site. After all, some of the Indigenous knowledge keepers may have been legit; I would hypothesize that a large fraction of the 14 students who were not accounted for, plus a small fraction of the students who were recorded as having died at the School, could have been buried in the Apple Orchard. This story is all about what happens when you have 215 soil disturbances instead of the 10-20 bodies that you had reason to believe might be there. BUT the majority of those kids would have been buried in individual marked graves, given last rites, etc. in the same way as described in volume 4 of the preliminary TRC Report.
This is way too goofy for words.
The Marshall Plan was reparations for all of Western Europe.
The British were forced to pay reparations to the United States shortly after the American Civil War because they built battleships for the Confederacy.
Jeremy Black has "no" problem with reparations paid to British slave holding families in the "present" but thinks reparations paid to families of enslaved Africans for uncompensated labor, trafficking, and psychological terror is "ANGRY" and unjustified. The guy is a walking meme.
Go figure. A libertarian who co-signs the British state compensating slave holders for loss of private property. The guy revealed himself.
So basically the post national canadians are using the term 'cultural genocide' and genocide as defined by Lemkin, interchangeably? CBC has apostrophe's in 'cultural genocide' report itemn (re-res schools), not used the term in 9 years to title a video (based on YT search only), and that is probably for the best, since there was apparently no proper vote (?) at some historical society where there was to be one, among other reasons. IMO differentialtion would have been helpfull, or maybe that is in the report but niot considered a transferable terrn, from residential school system in Canada and that is why the term was dropped? The speculation I ran across was to the effect that it might have been intentionally dropped, because multiculturalism, and immigration (vs. mass immigration) are the preferred terms for what followed mroe recently. Further to a term of 'cultural genocide' as pertains to residential schools. IMO, you would have needed to demonstrate the people who set up the residential schools had some concept of multicultural society, or maybe there was an idea floating about at the time, the indigenous people might set up their own schools, or with iindigenous input (that was not fulfilled) documents or witness, to suggest this, and the idea was dismissed. Otherwise, it would seem there was no other choice becuase there would be no other idea within their consiciousness available to them. The term 'cultural genocide' then would need to be clarified to state policies that were later found to have promoted a cultural genocide, or found to function to, cultural genocide without intent, or known intent, and perhaps something to that effect was there
Churchill was a traitor. Roberts is a debunked racist revisionist liar.
I'm not pursauded blame for Galippoli campaign lies with Churchill at all, Fisher and Halifax forced delays that totally undermined the brilliance of Churchill's orginal plan.
The plan was a mistake to begin with.
"There is no culture war" - That woman is either deluded, a liar, or insane.
100 MILLION! Good flippin' grief! The same has been said about the Medieval Catholic Church authority. The world's population before the Black Death (Plague) was like 500 million. I'm just gonna write a book how the New World Colonizers were worse than gen-o-siders. They were all humanity-a-ciders. They killed the entire planet's population including themselves &..... all the gentle slowly moving docile moon bears.
Genocide & Logical Consistency Some 8 million natives died from disease & therefore this was gen-o-side. Where did the Bubonic Plague come from? Is this likewise a gen-oh-side??? Or are those making the compliant against the Europeans also in denial???
Did he have an alcohol problem then?
I see why, just from a strategic viewpoint, the L/Dem/YT have to block, silence & insult/vilify: they have no other option. They can't go toe to toe & allow open debate against facts & reason/logic? Their whole basis is so weak, distorted & predicted on hostile emotion & falsely base animosity. That's why Ben states, 'facts don't care about......' I hope your feelings care about facts
