One point that has sparked controversy is The Woman King's historically inaccurate depiction of the Empire of Dahomey's attitude towards slavery.
In the film, King Ghezo and the Agojie are opposed to slavery. Ghezo is shown as a king struggling to end the practice in his country. Untrue.
Many African tribes participated in this and Dahomey was no exception. They would often enslave their enemies and sell them to European slave traders in exchange for weaponry for battle. As early as 1728, under the direction of King Agaja, the Dahomean army conquered the kingdoms of Whydah, and Popos.
The Dahomey empire practiced slavery, head hunting, cannibalism. A good number of enslaved African people sold to white slavers in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade were victims of Dahomey conquests.
Were white slaves sold in Africa?
According to Robert Davis, between 1 million and 1.25 million Europeans were captured by Barbary pirates and, except for the ones who converted to islam, sold as slaves in North Africa and Ottoman Empire between the 15th and 19th centuries.
