Almost every Midwest emo band from 2000 on is influenced by NMH. Plus for this album, you must think of Anne Frank. Jeff wrote this album after reading her diary. Much of the album is influenced by her writing. So the whole album takes on a very dark subject.

If you haven't listened to Aurora, I'd highly recommend checking her out. Her music is transcendent. It's nothing like BMTH. Aurora is a Norwegian experimental artist, and is one of the most underrated singers on the planet. I think her newest album "What Happened to the Heart?" would be a good place to start. It's very different from her past albums, but it will give you a good idea of her versatility.

This video revived a part of me I had long forgotten about. I absolutely love watching younger generations experiencing quality 90's alternative rock like this. This album is essentially my teen years in a nutshell. Our garage band covered several of these songs at the time. Such profound nostalgia watching this. Thank you for reminding me how intoxicatingly beautiful these songs are.

😭😭🎧 i love Radiohead

there was a girl i worked with years back who i really liked. i got to hang out with her a couple times outside of work. one night we left a party together and i gave her a ride home. instead of giving me directions to her house we just decided i should blindly try to find it. we spent all night driving around the city and out on the beach together talking and playing with the bioluminescent plankton. i always tried to get her to hang out, but she always declined except for those two times. when i finally took her home that night i told her i would be in town for another couple months (i had quit the job we worked at together several months before that) and told her that i’d love to hang out with her again. she declined, saying that this night was good enough and that if i ever came back into our job again that i better find her and talk to her or else she’d capture me. i know she liked me too, but i figure she knew something i didn’t and knew it was best for us to just keep liking each other. ANYWAY. she showed me this artist and i’ve never been the same since. sorry for rambling, i couldn’t stop once i started.

I would recommend the dissect podcast. in one season he analyzes this album. it is a deep dive for sure, but it is really interesting and illuminating if you are into musicology and radiohead...

Jonny Greenwood, Radiohead guitarist, does all the string arrangements for the band too. It’s amazing that he does this because it’s not like a band hiring someone from somewhere to write strings for them, which would work, but it wouldn’t have the same signature time and time again for their songs. They actually have a band member that does it and so there is a personal touch that Jonny gives to their work in their discography. And it’s just super cool that one of their band members is a composer. He has done a lot of scores for Paul Thomas Anderson movies. I recommend There Will Be Blood to watch because it’s an incredible movie and to also hear Jonny’s score which is widely recognized as one of the greatest movie scores ever.

Do John Coltrane - A Love Supreme

Since you wanted something happier, I'd recommend Velocity: Design: Comfort by Sweet Trip. It's the yin to this album's yang as both are albums that mix up shoegaze with other genres and yet while this album is depressing as shit that album is pretty joyful.

My favourite Radiohead album. Just such great songwriting all around. And with Amnesiac my favourite era of theirs. Motion Picture Soundtrack is one of my favourite songs from them because the album version, the solo acoustic performances and the OKNOTOK cassette version are all incredible. Highly recommend those other two version if you haven’t yet. Cheers for another great reaction.

"And true love lives on lollipops and crisps" is one of the most heart-breaking lyrics ever written if you look up what Thom was referencing: He had once read a newspaper article about a tragic incident where a young child around 5 years old was left alone in his home for a week as his parents left on holiday. After a week of being alone it was found that he survived by eating the only food he could reach: Lolipops and chips. This is the instinctive desperate love being described in the following chorus: "Dont leave... don't leave..."

You put it well. It's about false hope. Hope in the face of hopelessness. Hope where there can be no hope and there is no chance of survival. This was all recorded in a house, in the living and bed rooms. Those sounds at the end are Jeff Mangum setting down his guitar, standing up from his chair and walking away.

The greatest work ever pressed to vinyl. I still can't hear Two Headed Boy without weeping. This album is a child's funeral procession passing an amusement park.

i saw a live ok computer/radiohead gig when the album dropped, it was quality. also exit music is on the sound track to romeo n juliet.

This whole album makes me weep and has since the first time I heard it. It's perfect and gorgeous and heartbreaking.

I think you'd really enjoy Promises by Pharoah Sanders and Floating Points, considering how much you liked the soundscape of this album.
