RNAV 17 approach practice with a hold
Today we flew from Auburn over to Tacoma Narrows to drop off another club pilot to pick up our 182. At Tacoma, we filed IFR and shot two RNAV 17 approaches, one to a published hold, another with vectors back to Auburn on the RNAV A approach. Topped it off with unusual attitude recovery with partial panel and a DME arc off the SEA VOR.

Whoosh it was a hot one today. Density altitude around 1,600 at Friday Harbor, over 2,500 back at Auburn. Seattle air traffic control professional as always. Hope you enjoy!

Called Seattle Clearance via phone and after a delay, suggested we contact 123.85 via radio for faster service. Got the Vamps One Departure. Great ride through the clouds. Was bumpy coming into the Narrows.

Obtained IFR clearance from Bellingham Ground. Departed 16 on the KIENO6 SID Penn Cove transition. Contacted Victoria Terminal (Hello Canada!) then headed to Auburn. Still learning to read back the approach instructions - thanks for your patience Seattle Approach!

First time flying to KBLI. We had a SW 737 behind us, which I thought was very cool. Had an issue getting the Dynon Skyview to properly display the green needles. The glide slope was working. Very nice airport, first time having a marshaller. Got the stamp, then headed back to Auburn.

Ed and I flew from Auburn to Ellensburg. Tried to pick up our IFR clearance on the way there, didn’t work out. Landed at Ellensburg, then stopped at Cle Elum. Then flew back at 4,500 through Snoqualmie Pass, an incredible experience.
ATC Unable…at this time.

Today Ed and I flew an IFR training flight from Auburn to Ellensburg. The Cardinal doesn’t have the best climb rate and we decided to wait to obtain our IFR flight plan clearance while airborne near our required altitude. Well, we didn’t get the chance to ask…

My first instrument flight training. Ed is an exceptional instructor with so much knowledge. Took off from Thun Field, KPLU, landed at Whidbey Airpark, practiced grass takeoffs and landing. Shot the ILS 20 at Bremerton and the RNAV 35 with a hold coming back to KPLU.
Turbulent Tulip 🌷 Trip

I’ve always wanted to take my loving wife for a flight over the Skagit Valley tulip fields since I got my license. Unfortunately, she was not feeling well today. The winds were gusting in the morning at one point to a 25 knot crosswind out of Auburn. I wasn’t going to go, but when I got to the airport the winds were within limits. The ride was moderately bumpy, but smoothed out when I arrived a...

Awesome to see your progress! Thank you for sharing. It's very helpful, especially hearing the ATC comms.
Flew to Friday Harbor last month for my long commercial XC. Came in high as well had to forward slip it in! Cool little airport
Oh I love your instructor! Cool, clear, timely advice, and upbeat, too. I came to your video because I'm a new PPL trained on Cessna about to check out on a Cherokee. Thanks.
Thank you! My instructor is the best. He is helping me get my IFR ticket! Cherokees are fun, little different but fun to fly.
Beautiful. Nice flight. That sky looks amazing.
"Cessna with request" "No" "Okay"
Instead of with request when they answer your initial call just say the request. Call up without the request- otherwise how would they know you're trying to open ifr which is a very different request than when they don't want to bother with vfr flight following.
If we really wanted to we could call them back. The weather wasn’t a factor and we still had valuable IFR training this flight. If the weather was crappy we would have called clearance delivery on the ground before.
@@PilotAndrew also valid ;)
There flying a Cessna C 177 Cardinal it has a full cantilever wing. Beautiful plane & nice ones hard to find. In production only 10 years. Incredible visibility down & up. Pilot sits almost ahead of the wing.
❤❤ glad you guys had a great flight!
Beautiful views going through the pass at the end! One of your most spectacular videos! ❤ By the way, at 8:00 I've heard it's 70 percent of your takeoff speed by half way. If you are accelerating at a constant rate, your distance travelled is proportional to the square of your speed. So if you are at .707 (square root of 1/2) of your takeoff speed halfway down the runway, you will be at your takeoff velocity at the end of the runway. That actually may not be good enough. I like your 3/4 idea better for this particular field! Even better, find your predicted takeoff roll from the manual and make sure you achieve 70 percent of takeoff speed by the time you reach half of that length. Using half of runway length can be problematic. Say you reach 70 percent of takeoff speed halfway down a 10,000' runway. That probably means you have no climb power when you rotate.
I've always seen that from I-5 and wondered how or why is an air strip so close to the highway. Seems a bight tight but it works, I guess.
That's a scary airport
Woodland had a fatality a few years ago. Mooney that ran out of runway.
@@ZeewaterJohannes I saw that video.
Still flying the pattern?
Go
Excellent instructor. Nice job with those landings over those trees man! Looks tough.
Is this still accessible?
I don’t think so.
@@PilotAndrew bummer :(
Great job on those cross wind landings! I can feel the concentration and tension they bring. IFR in IMC is really a rewarding experience, too!
Thanks for sharing the flight! It's super helpful to see the process from uncontrolled fields here. I'm hoping to do the same out of PLU soon for currency, so this is great to see!
Air vents source is from the leading edge of the wing, not the tail
During takeoff I noticed the DG is not correct. They didn’t do a proper run up. Too much aileron movement during the stall initiation. Approach too fast and unstable and flared too high.
Thanks Ed for taking my care of my #1. ❤
That approach looked scary thru the trees.
What about the run-up

I’m so bummed I was sick- I know we have talked about taking this trip since you first started flying. 😢❤
Hello-that's epic ! ;))
I flew a Cherokee 180 for two years after my Private. Loved it. Might wanna work on the camera position....is that a visor in the way? Anyway, fun vid....thanks
Yea, that sun visor … didn’t realize it until reviewing the video at home. Oh well. I know for next time! Thanks for watching!
9:37 I liked the synchronised headsets-on-dash thing!
Andy love to come out and fly the Cardinal Ed
Thanks, subbed.
❤❤❤❤
I appreciate the unpolished video without the glitz. It shows the progression of someone learning a new type, and general airmanship. And also, the value of a good instructor to sharpen skills. Well done!
Thank you! I wish the camera was in a better position to show the panel, but I figured the audio instruction could always help. The instructor, Ed Bryce is outstanding.
Smooth flight with clear skies !!
Glad the rain held off for you!! ❤❤
Me too!
It's really cool seeing the runway lights as you turn final!
I also like the runway lights on departure!
Good job dud dud you are a great pilot
So are you!
Where were your ceilings this flight?
Not great. Heading back a special metar update for KSEA reported 800 and 1.5 vis
@@PilotAndrew yikes! That's got scud running written all over it!
Looks cold! Cardinals are great. I ferried brand new ones from the factory in Wichita, in 1974. Each had .2 on the tach. Just an engine run-no flight test. Ps; you might want to adjust your go pro and sun visors a little bit, for better viewing.
That’s awesome you got to take them out brand new. I totally agree with the GoPro position. Still trying to find a sweet spot to mount it.
My guys ❤ I’m glad you had a great flight today.
Thank you my love! ❤
11:02 pm. Yay!! Hi Grayson and Andy. 🥰🥰🥰🥰❤❤❤❤
Hello! Happy New Year!
That airport is ridiculous!
That is a long haul is an GA plane.
what a cool club instructor. I am thinking of joining a club myself once I finish my PPL. General aviation planes are uber expensive right now
Proud of my guys ❤
Super amazing and smooth flight !!
What an excellent instructor, very calming but one jump ahead of you all the time. Good flying between the trees! well done!
Excellent video; thanks very much for posting your flight in it’s entirety. I’m a relatively new Cardinal owner and appreciate the insights. Great airplanes and very nice to fly.
WoW! those trees! Good job.
This video is a very good and informative. Thanks
Damn dude that approach was insane. Did you fast forward that?! Wtf
Real time footage- the GoPro captured it well, those trees looked really close, plus Norm Greer isn’t very wide so it looks faster. Either way, I was glad I had an expert instructor with me.
Good job dud dud
Thanks Bub. My stupid audio cable wasn't connected right so it didn't record my awesome voice. lol.
Thanks for taking me to a bougee lunch 😂
