Happy New Year! Have I read some of the most popular books in 2024? Some of them! I'm going through the Goodreads list in this video to let you know which of these books I read, which I liked, and which I want to read :) *this list is the top read books on Goodreads in 2024 based on users who signed up in 2024.. So happy you found StoryGraph I’ve been using it this past year and it’s cool to reflect on the pacing of a book and whether I liked the characters (versus goodreads open ended reviews)

    I agree dude definitely will never get to the point where I’m reading over 100 books a year. I like to sit in the moment with a lot of them and find I like books more if it takes a few days (vs polishing it off in a day)

    Please don’t be embarrassed to say you haven’t read from a popular author. There are sooo many popular authors, and it’s impossible to keep up with all the trends and also read backlist and classics and sit with things. No shame whatsoever. I’m sure there are lots of books you’ve read that the Emily Henry connoisseurs have never heard of. Nothing bad about Emily Henry or people who read her books, I’m sure they’re great! I haven’t read any either, or Kristin Hannah. But there’s no shame in either of it. In the name of diversity, if I were to pick up a romance book, I’d try Kennedy Ryan or Tia Williams, I’ve heard nothing but amazing things about their books too. Perhaps more on the deeper or emotional side, but yeah, heard great things! No shame in wanting to read Emily Henry though, if that’s what I sound like haha! I wouldn’t call A man called Ove cute exactly, but there is a beautiful romance in there, definitely worth a read. We do not part is intriguing to me as well. I’m reading Detransition, Baby this year too and the cover for Stag dance is calling my name haha! And I feel the same about Bazterrica, the flesh is not for me but Unworthy sounds interesting!

      Oh thank you so much for this response! Yeah it can be overwhelming sometimes to look at all the books I want to read and forget about how many I've already read - definitely want to work on reducing the pressure to read everything and reduce unrealistic reading goals for myself. Thank you for the romance suggestions! I've had "Seven Days in June" and "Before I Let Go" on my TBR for a while - Williams and Ryan are two more authors I definitely should prioritize this year :)

      @ I write things like that and then I go and think about how I don’t need to tell other people what to do ^^ I mean well haha! Promise 😂 I just wish there was less shame in general I think, I don’t think it does us much good. I’m sure you’ll have a great reading year whichever books you choose! 😊

    Kristin Hannah was not for me but I can see why people like her. I enjoyed the Emily Henry and Fredrik Backman books I read (Book Lovers & A Man Called Ove), and would like to read more. I relate to your wanting to read people's backlist books first, I almost never read newly published books because of that though 😆 Hunger Stone sounds interesting, Carmilla is short and easy and in my opinion better than Dracula.

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 23 години тому

      Yah its fun to see what is being published soon, but I almost never read new releases when they first come out and the books are typically just as fun to read a few years later :) Glad to hear that you liked Carmilla! I like classics, but sometimes older books are slower reads - I'll definitely try to get to that before Hungerstone!

    So many good options! Definitely would recommended The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah, Anxious People by Frederick Backman (the writing style in this one was so different and fun), and Happy Place by Emily Henry is my favorite from her!

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 23 години тому

      Oh great to know! Anxious People I've heard less about than Backman's other books, but I'm very interested - maybe I'll start there for his books! And I think Happy Place and Nightingale seem like two of the most popular from Hannah and Henry. Thank you for the great recommendations on places to start with these authors!!

    I'm also new to BookTube and just got back into reading recently. I'm also trying to get used to filming myself and editing it. I've done editing for videos and all before. Used to edit a lot for wattpad when wrote fanfictions and original stories on there in my middle/high school days. I tend to use InShot, Canva, Picsart, Phonto, and Polarr for editing though haven't figured out right size to edit banners for here and want to do it how do my twitter headers. Also didn't realize that newbie booktag was a thing. I might have to do one for that. Just made this inactive account of mine for booktube apart from my main youtube channel. Definitely look forward to your content.

    I think we have all DNF'ed Infinite Jest at some point in our lives, and rightly so 😂 I Who Have Never Known Men was my favourite book I read all year, it is odd but I think it is about finding hope and friendship and love in each other in a very dark situation, I loved it. Mr Salary reminded me of Franny and Zooey, so that might work as a longer version if you haven't read that. Loved Piranesi too.

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 6 днів тому

      Yeah the footnotes in Infinite Jest just felt rude after a while haha. I think I might have to move I Who Have Never Known Men to a 5 star... I just finished it, loved the experience, but was very thrown off by the ending and confused. I tend to have 5 star books as those that really make me think and stick with me afterward and this one is certainly doing that! I love your take that it is about friendship and finding hope in a dark situation although there was also something lonely about the book and the main character seems to be ok without the companionship of others at times.... almost like a Buddhist non-attachment perspective on things... I probably will need to reread this one at some point. Also I hadn't heard of Zooey and Franny before, but I'm going to add it to my TBR - thank you for the recommendation!

    Wow, what a fantastic and thorough wrap-up of your 2024 reading! I absolutely love the idea of categorizing books as type one or type two fun-it’s such a creative way to think about reading experiences, and I might have to borrow that framework for my own reflections. Your breakdown using Storygraph is so satisfying! I’m a huge fan of data visualization too, so seeing your moods, pacing, and genre stats was really inspiring. I totally agree about how hard it can be to process books when you're reading a lot-it’s such a fine balance between quantity and quality of experience. I, too, found If Beale Street Could Talk to be absolutely amazing. Baldwin's writing captures so much humanity, and I needed time to sit with his words after finishing it. I'm working my way through his works this year-No Name in the Street is up next for me-and I’m excited to see where it takes me. Also, your thoughts on Penance have me completely intrigued! It's officially on my TBR now. Looking forward to seeing how your 2025 reading journey unfolds. Great video!

      Thanks for watching :) And please feel free to use type 1 and type 2! Sometimes books just serve such different purposes that its hard to rank them by just a numerical scale. I also want to read a lot more of Baldwin's work this year - trying to figure out which one should be next for me so I'll be looking out for a video from you on No Name in the Street :)

As someone else who is obsessed with data visualization, I cannot get enough of these yearly wrap ups with all the charts. • @ellenmadebookclub
    @ellenmadebookclub 10 днів тому

    This was type 1 and 2 fun 😊 Love that distinction. Star ratings are very limited, because books are so different, so it’s so weird to give the same rating to books that are just from different planets 😅 But I agree that the favorites are usually the ones that are both, enjoyable and worthwhile, or like, emotionally and/or intellectually stimulating. If you’re interested in the opioid crisis, have you read Empire of Pain, nonfic about the Sackler family? I haven’t, I just watched Painkiller on … some streaming service, which is on the same topic, not sure how much different the book is. Fascinating and infuriating. Both types on fun. I’m doing my stats for the year now too, I don’t understand how people can do it before January, when the year isn’t even over yet! 😅 Like what’s the rush, let’s all calm down just a little 😂

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 6 днів тому

      Oh! I haven't read Empire of Pain yet, but a friend of mine gave me her physical copy so I definitely want to try to get around to it this year - agree it is both a fascinating and infuriating topic. I'll have to check out Painkiller as well if I can find it. Thank you for the recommendations! And I agree about the end of year wrap up - I think all of January can be for end of year wrap up and planning :) Can't wait to see your wrap up stats!

    Too many people are worried about being extra and forget to have their basics covered, and honestly, that just feels exhausting. Popular books are popular for a reason, and there's nothing wrong with being well-read in what everyone’s talking about. Loved hearing your reactions to these!

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 10 днів тому

      Totally agree! Sometimes it's fun to find lesser-known authors and books, but classics and popular books are loved by lots of people for a reason :)

  • @AaronReadABook
    @AaronReadABook 15 днів тому

    The most popular books on GoodReads are almost a list of books to avoid for me 😂 I think there are a lot of teenagers on GoodReads so I do not trust their taste. That said, I really enjoyed A Little Life and The Secret History. Taylor Jenkins Reid sets her books in really interesting eras and they are decent trashy page-turners, I didn't like Carrie Soto though. Richard Osman is the best-selling author in the UK by a country mile, and his books are wonderful. Both those Madeline Miller books are great, I actually prefer Circe. All Systems Red is great, the whole Murderbot series is so fun and they are very short. I Who Have Never Known Men was my number 1 book of 2024! Lots of people don't like Frankenstein, two of my booktube friends have recently trashed it so I wouldn't feel bad (I hated Dracula). Book Lovers is well worth a read, I want to get more Emily Henry.

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads 13 днів тому

      Whoa you've read so many of these! Appreciate the thoughtful comment! I will definitely check out Richard Osman, All Systems Red, and both Madeline Miller books. I actually just read I Who Have Never Known Men and LOVED it although I can't really say I fully understood it... need to do some reflecting on that one because it was so creative, unique, and fun to read, but the ending was surprising to me and I still don't fully know what to make of it. I think that's probably part of the reason the book is so interesting though!

  • @giselemartins4240

      7 Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is the only TJR I have read and I LOVED it ( I also had a period where I was really into deep diving into the lives of old Hollywood stars so I kind of knew it would be fun for me). It's shocking this one wasn't on the list since I feel like it's her most popular book, but, to your point, this list felt suspicious to me - I agree Goodreads might not be the most reliable platform

    I am the opposite with audiobooks, I prefer to listen to light fiction and struggle with non-fiction, I think because I like to look stuff up. That said, I am training for a marathon at the moment and always listen to an audiobook, so maybe I should try the Murakami book 😆I had tickets to see Patti Smith at St Paul's Cathedral a few months ago and I had to cancel for a work event, I was gutted, I've always heard great things about her books. I remember really liking Lolita when I read it, Nabokov seems like a bit of a jerk though, he was always badmouthing other authors.

    • @RicksReads
      @RicksReads Місяць тому

      Whoa! Amazing that you are training for a marathon - that's major! I definitely think you'd like Murakami's book then and there's not much (that I remember) needing to look up in it since it's mostly just a memoir about his life and his relationship to running. Bummer you had to miss out on seeing Patti Smith - hopefully you'll get another chance in the future - what a fascinating life she's lived. I didn't know much about Nabokov personally, but a quick google let me know there are whole articles about how he is a jerk... seems he did have a bit of an ego and a problem with lots of other authors from his time 🙃

      OH! I read the first two books by her in the Housemaid series a while ago and really enjoyed them! Do you have specific books by her you recommend? Those books I read were definitely fun thrillers

      @ I read those two as well! Need to read the third…Other than the Housemaid series, I recommend The Teacher ❤️❤️❤️❤️ And I also enjoyed The Boyfriend - not as much as I liked The Teacher, but I had fun anyways 😁

    Lots of great choices here! 'Before the Coffee Gets Cold' is on my 'Read Soon' list, too. I love Time Travel books! 'Kite Runner' is definitely very interesting. I'm a mood reader as well, and I have a difficult time reading sad books. Always putting them off... ☺️ Enjoy your wonderful vacation!

    Small Things Like These is great, if you like that get Foster which is even better and then watch the film of it which is amazing. Open Water is good, and as a Londoner I felt like it was a very accurate portrait of modern day London. I have a very low tolerance for relentlessly miserable books, they almost never work for me, A Little Life is an exception, it's incredibly readable and the friendships in it are beautiful.

      Oh! Had not heard of Foster, but adding it to my TBR - thank you for the recommendation! Glad to hear that you enjoyed both Open Water and A Little Life - certainly helps with motivation to actually get to reading these two next month rather than putting them off if others say they're worth the read!
